Mia Bennett spent two years trying to become the perfect wife to Ethan Carter, the billionaire she loved more than anything. But Ethan never seemed to love her back. He was cold, distant, and always made time for Vanessa Moore, his beautiful childhood friend. Mia endured the loneliness because she believed their marriage could eventually become real. Then one night, she overheard Ethan promising Vanessa that once he divorced Mia, Vanessa would become his wife. Her world shattered. Before Mia could confront him, Ethan accused her of betraying him with another man after Vanessa presented him with carefully manipulated evidence. Humiliated and heartbroken, Mia finally stopped begging for her husband's love. She signed the divorce papers and disappeared. Ethan thought she would eventually return. Six months later, Mia came back as a completely different woman—confident, successful, and determined never to depend on Ethan again. But she wasn't alone. Ryan Anderson, a wealthy businessman who had secretly loved Mia for years, stood beside her. For the first time, Ethan realized what he had lost. Desperate to get his wife back, Ethan began chasing Mia relentlessly, publicly admitted that he had been the one who destroyed their marriage. But Mia refused to forgive him easily. Worse, Ryan had no intention of stepping aside. He gives Mia the love and respect Ethan denied her, turning Ethan's regret into a bitter rivalry. As Ethan fights to win Mia back, the truth behind her divorce begins to surface. Vanessa's lies were far deeper than Mia ever imagined. Now Ethan must prove that his regret is genuine not because he cannot bear losing his wife, but because he finally understands how badly he broke the woman he loved. And Mia must decide whether the man begging for her return deserves another chance.

Chapter 1 The Promise I Was Never Meant to Hear

Mia Bennett stood outside the private study, her hand resting lightly against the closed door.

She had been looking for her husband for nearly an hour.

It was their second wedding anniversary.

She had spent the entire afternoon preparing dinner herself, even though the Carter mansion had a dozen chefs.

She had bought Ethan a watch.

Not an ordinary watch.

It had taken her months to save for it.

Mia had even changed three times before finally choosing a simple black dress that she knew he liked.

For once, she wanted to surprise him.

She wanted tonight to be different.

She wanted to believe that after two years of marriage, Ethan Carter might finally look at her and see more than a wife he had married out of obligation.

She raised her hand to knock.

Then she heard Vanessa's voice from inside.

"I can't keep waiting for you, Ethan."

Mia froze.

Her fingers slowly dropped.

Vanessa.

Why was she here?

Mia moved closer to the door.

Ethan's voice followed.

"You won't have to wait much longer."

Her heart skipped.

There was something intimate about his tone that made her stomach tighten.

Vanessa laughed softly.

"What does that mean?"

"It means Mia and I are almost finished."

Mia stopped breathing.

The gift bag slipped slightly from her fingers.

Finished?

She pressed her palm against the door, afraid she had heard him wrong.

Vanessa spoke again.

"You're really going to divorce her?"

"Yes."

The answer was immediate.

Cold.

Certain.

Mia's eyes filled with tears.

"But she's your wife."

"That doesn't change anything."

A painful silence followed.

Then Ethan said the words that destroyed the last piece of hope Mia had been holding onto.

"Once the divorce is finalized, I'll marry you."

Mia stared at the door.

For two years, she had convinced herself that Ethan was simply busy.

That his coldness was because of work.

That his silence didn't mean he didn't love her.

That Vanessa was only his childhood friend.

She had defended him to everyone.

She had defended their marriage to herself.

And now she had finally heard the truth.

She was never the woman Ethan intended to keep.

Mia covered her mouth to stop herself from sobbing.

The anniversary gift fell from her hand.

The box landed silently on the thick carpet.

Inside was the expensive watch she had sacrificed months to buy.

A stupid gift.

For a husband who had just promised another woman their future.

Mia stepped backward.

One step.

Then another.

She didn't wait to hear anything else.

She walked away before either of them could discover she had been standing outside.

---

By the time Mia reached her bedroom, tears were streaming down her face.

She closed the door behind her and leaned against it.

Her chest hurt.

She pressed both hands against her stomach, trying to calm herself.

"I loved you," she whispered.

Her voice broke.

"I loved you so much."

The worst part wasn't even Vanessa.

It was Ethan.

She had spent two years trying to earn the affection of a man who had apparently already decided she wasn't enough.

She remembered every birthday he had forgotten.

Every dinner she had eaten alone.

Every night she had waited for him until midnight.

Every time Vanessa called, Ethan left whatever he was doing to answer.

Mia had always told herself not to be jealous.

She had always told herself she trusted him.

Maybe she had simply been foolish.

A knock sounded.

"Mia?"

Her heart stopped.

Ethan.

She quickly wiped her tears.

"Come in."

The door opened.

Ethan entered wearing the same black suit he had worn to the business meeting earlier that evening.

His expression was unreadable.

His eyes briefly landed on her face.

"You've been crying."

Mia looked away.

"No."

He frowned.

"Mia."

"I'm fine."

She couldn't tell him.

Not yet.

She needed to understand how long he had been planning to leave her.

Ethan walked toward the dresser and loosened his tie.

"You weren't downstairs."

"I wasn't hungry."

"It's our anniversary."

Mia almost laughed.

Instead, she stared at him.

"You remembered?"

His eyes narrowed.

"Of course I remembered."

"Did you?"

"What is that supposed to mean?"

Mia looked at the man she had loved for two years.

She wanted him to confess.

She wanted him to tell her that Vanessa meant nothing.

She wanted him to say he had never intended to leave her.

Instead, Ethan simply looked annoyed.

And suddenly, Mia understood.

If she asked him, he might lie.

And she wasn't ready to hear another lie.

"Nothing," she whispered.

She turned away.

Ethan watched her for several seconds before his phone rang.

The moment he saw the caller, his expression changed.

Vanessa.

Mia saw it.

Ethan stepped toward the balcony.

He answered quietly.

"I told you not to call me here."

Mia's eyes burned.

She didn't hear Vanessa's response.

But she didn't need to.

She already knew.

Her husband was choosing another woman.

Again.

---

The next morning, Mia woke before sunrise.

She sat at the edge of the bed and stared at the wedding ring on her finger.

She had once believed it represented forever.

Now it felt like a chain.

She slowly removed it.

For several seconds, she held it in her palm.

Then her phone rang.

It was Ethan's mother.

"Mia, where is Ethan?"

"He's at work."

"Come to the Carter Group headquarters immediately."

Mia frowned.

"Why?"

There was a pause.

Then the older woman's voice became cold.

"We need to discuss something concerning your marriage."

Mia's heart sank.

"What happened?"

"You'll find out when you get here."

The call ended.

Mia stared at her phone.

Something was wrong.

Very wrong.

She had barely arrived at Carter Group when she noticed the strange looks from the employees.

Whispers followed her through the lobby.

Then she saw Ethan.

He was standing beside Vanessa.

And Vanessa was holding a folder.

Ethan's expression was colder than she had ever seen it.

"Mia."

She stopped.

"What is this?"

Vanessa stepped forward.

"I think you should ask your husband."

Ethan threw several photographs onto the table.

Mia looked down.

Her blood ran cold.

The photographs showed her entering a hotel with another man.

Another photograph showed the same man holding her hand.

They looked intimate.

But Mia knew the truth.

That man was her lawyer.

She had met him at the hotel three nights earlier because she had been investigating suspicious transactions connected to Ethan's company.

Someone had taken those photographs.

And someone had changed the story.

Ethan's eyes were filled with fury.

"How long have you been cheating on me?"

Mia stared at him in disbelief.

"What?"

Vanessa whispered, "Ethan, maybe you shouldn't do this here."

Mia's eyes moved between them.

Then she looked at her husband.

"You believe these pictures?"

Ethan's jaw tightened.

"I saw them with my own eyes."

"They don't show what you think."

"Then explain them."

"I can."

"Do it."

Mia opened her mouth.

But before she could speak, Ethan's voice cut through the room.

"If you want to save this marriage, you better give me a damn good reason."

Mia stared at him.

A tear slipped down her cheek.

After everything she had endured for him, he had chosen to believe a photograph over his wife.

And suddenly, she knew.

This marriage had already been destroyed.

She just hadn't been brave enough to admit it.

Mia slowly removed her wedding ring.

She placed it on the table between them.

Ethan's expression changed.

"What are you doing?"

Mia looked directly into his eyes.

"Giving you what you wanted."

She turned toward the exit.

Behind her, Ethan called her name.

But Mia didn't stop.

For the first time in two years, she walked away from Ethan Carter without looking back.

And neither of them knew that before the day ended, Mia would discover a secret that would change both their lives forever.
