LOGINChloe got home and went straight to her room, replaying her conversation with Adrian over and over in her head. She was still lost in thought when her phone rang.
It was Caleb. "Hey, Caleb," she answered. "Hi. I was starting to forget what your face looks like. Why haven't you stopped by?" Caleb asked. "I've been a bit busy at work," Chloe said, the stress evident in her voice. "What's wrong with your voice? Did something happen?" he asked, concern creeping in. "Work's just been stressing me out a bit," she said flatly. "Yeah, okay. I'll swing by soon, all right?" Caleb said. "Okay." Chloe forced a small laugh before ending the call. Caleb lowered his phone, uneasiness settling in his chest. He had never heard Chloe sound like that. She was always full of energy. He couldn't shake the feeling that something was wrong. Back at the estate, Chloe dropped onto the couch and buried her face in a cushion, grinding her frustration into it. "Adrian, that bastard. I'm so stressed because of that man I can't even focus on anything." Meanwhile, Adrian's grandfather sat comfortably in front of the television, completely absorbed in his favorite drama. "Hey! I could've gotten hurt!" a character yelled from the screen. "Jeez." The old man clicked his tongue. "Rich people are people too. Why do they always scream and yell? They're always written as the villains." He barely noticed the footsteps behind him until Adrian spoke. "I'm back." His grandfather immediately stood up. "You're back! So, did you set a date for me to meet your girlfriend?" "Pardon?" Adrian's expression flickered. "Why are you making that face? Is something wrong?" Adrian paused for a brief moment before answering. "No. Don't worry. You'll see her soon enough." "Really?" his grandfather asked, watching him closely as Adrian turned and walked toward his room. Upstairs, Chloe sat in front of her laptop, trying to distract herself with work. Her phone buzzed again. She groaned. "What is it now?" She cleared her throat and answered. "Hello?" "Where are you?" Adrian's voice came through. "Where would I be at this hour? Home, obviously," she replied, her eyes still fixed on the laptop screen. "Then come downstairs for a second. I'm outside your house." Chloe froze. "You're outside? Now? Wait... why?" She was already on her feet, rushing to the window. Pulling the curtain aside, she looked down. There he was. "Why would you show up this late without telling me? I was about to go to bed," she said, half annoyed and half nervous. Adrian looked up from inside his car. "Funny. Your lights are still on." "Oh my God," Chloe whispered. "Would you rather I let myself in?" "No! I'll come out. Just stay put, okay?" She ended the call and stared at herself. "This man is unbelievably stubborn. Okay... wait. What do I even do first?" She scrambled around her room, quickly putting on makeup and grabbing a pair of sunglasses before hurrying downstairs. The moment she got into the passenger seat, Adrian said nothing. He simply studied her from head to toe. After a long silence, he finally spoke. "Can you even see through those?" Chloe immediately pulled off the sunglasses, embarrassed. "I thought you said you were going to bed," Adrian said, clearly puzzled by the sudden makeup. "I never let anyone see me without it. It's practically a rule for women," she lied, trying to protect her identity. Adrian's eyes drifted over her outfit. "Judging by what you're wearing, that 'rule' doesn't seem very consistent." "Whatever." Chloe folded her arms. "Why did you drive all the way out here?" She desperately wanted to change the subject. Adrian reached into the back seat and pulled out a document folder with an envelope tucked inside. He held it out to her. "I drafted a contract. Read it, and memorize my profile before you meet my grandfather." Chloe stared at the folder, completely caught off guard. "I said I'd think about it. I never said I'd actually do it." She pushed it back into his hands. "I don't have any other option but you," Adrian said quietly, desperation creeping into his voice. "You said you'd repay me. So let's do this. A contract relationship." "No." Chloe grabbed the door handle. "Find someone else." She threw the car door open and ran. "Ms. Stephanie!" Adrian ripped off his seatbelt and chased after her. They sprinted past the front of her family's restaurant before Adrian caught up and stepped in front of her, forcing her to stop. "Are you seriously going to back out like this?" he demanded, breathing hard. "No. That's not what I'm saying." Chloe struggled to catch her breath. "It's because I have a real reason I can't do it." How am I supposed to fool both a company president and a company chairman? she thought bitterly. "Then tell me." Adrian looked directly into her eyes. "What's your reason?" "It's..." Her words died in her throat. Over Adrian's shoulder, she spotted her brother walking toward the restaurant. "Wait. First..." Without thinking, Chloe ducked and pressed her face against Adrian's chest, hiding herself from view. Adrian stiffened. "What are you doing?" "You know what? Let's talk tomorrow!" She pushed him away, but the moment she realized he was losing his balance, she instinctively reached out to pull him back. Instead, they both crashed to the ground. Chloe landed on top of Adrian. For a heartbeat, neither of them moved. Their faces were only inches apart. Before either of them could react, their lips met.Adrian and Ethan walked towards their office, with Ethan trailing a step behind him. "What do you mean, remake the dish? Ms. Victoria said it was rated the highest at the tasting," Ethan said. "I am the president of this company," Adrian replied. "Is any other reason necessary?" "Well, it's very unlike you, sir. And you seem to be treating Ms. Chloe very emotionally." "Mr. Ethan." Adrian's voice sharpened with irritation. "Do you really not realize who Ms. Chloe is?" "Who else would she be?" Ethan asked, confused. "Chloe is Chloe." "That Chloe is... Ms. Stephanie." "What?" Ethan burst into laughter. "What are you talking about? Is that really true?" "Yes. I've already confirmed it," Adrian said, looking straight at him. "Wait. Just wait a second. How is that..." Ethan shook his head in disbelief. "So, what are you going to do now?" "What do you think? I'm going to take my time and make her realize..." Adrian pulled out his chair and sat down. "Just how big a mistake she's ma
Chloe went to work the next day. Something had happened on the way back with Adrian. A ball had struck her in the face, leaving a bruise. She had tried everything she could think of to cover it up. She also had another reason to hide it: she couldn't let Adrian discover who she really was. She arrived with only a few minutes left before the usual morning check, so she hurried toward the elevator with a patch covering one eye. She had just reached out to press the button when Adrian stepped into the same elevator. Chloe froze. In her shock, she let go of the patch, revealing the bruise beneath it. Adrian had seen it. Her secret was out. She quickly pressed the button and fled the elevator at the first opportunity. Adrian stood there, watching her leave. The bruise and the sudden way she had bolted only made him more suspicious. He walked straight to his office, his mind racing with thoughts he couldn't shake. Had he really gone on a date with one of his own employees? He paced a
Chloe and Adrian arrived at their destination. It was his grandfather's house. "Maybe I should have taken something to calm my nerves," Chloe murmured as she stepped onto the grounds. "Are you nervous?" Adrian asked. "Didn't you say you had this under control?" "Mr. Ethan said your grandfather is a very scary, very strict person." Chloe swallowed. "If he finds out we're lying to him..." "If you're scared," Adrian said, "then while we're inside, try to love me for real." "What?" Chloe stared at him, stunned. "Let's go," Adrian said. They stepped inside. Adrian's grandfather was already seated, rubbing his hands together like some kind of mafia boss. "Hey!" Adrian greeted him. "Ms. Stephanie!" the old man exclaimed, turning to a servant standing nearby. "You are as beautiful as I imagined." "Not her. Her," Adrian corrected, looking at Chloe, who was standing behind him. Adrian had no idea that Stephanie wasn't her real name. She was Chloe, an employee of his own company. "Wh
Chloe reached Caleb's restaurant to find the door still open. It must be closing time, she thought. She stepped inside, her eyes sweeping the room."Are there still customers?" she murmured to herself, walking deeper into the restaurant. The file from the company was pressed against her chest.A few steps further, she saw Caleb. He was with a woman, and the two of them were laughing, completely at ease with each other."Come on! You can't just do that all of a sudden. Look, I've spilled it everywhere!" the woman said, holding a glass in her hand as she laughed.Chloe stopped where she stood. She did not know what to do with her feet, her hands, or even her face. Her world felt as though it had been crushed into pieces. She had a crush on Caleb, a very big one, and she had carried it quietly for a long time. Then she saw the worst thing she could have imagined. They kissed, right there in front of her.In a state of shock, Chloe let go of the file. It hit the floor with a loud thud, ma
In the board meeting room, everyone was already seated, the company's executives among them. A few minutes of quiet shuffling passed, and then the door opened and the company president walked in. Adrian. The entire room rose to greet him, a gesture of respect. He gave a small motion of his hand. "Please, take your seats. Let us begin." He lowered himself into his chair and allowed a moment of silence to settle over the table. Then he looked up and called out the next name on the agenda. "Development Team 4." It was Ms. Victoria's group. "Is the chef ready?" President Adrian asked. "Actually..." Ms. Victoria's words began to stumble. "Ms. Chloe was supposed to present for our team." She never got to finish. "Why? Is there a problem?" Adrian asked. "Well, that's..." The sound of the door opening cut her off. Ms. Victoria turned around, and so did everyone else. It was Chloe. She slipped into the boardroom on her toes, her face and half her body hidden behind a
Chloe hurried into the building, praying she wouldn't be late. She signed in at the front desk, barely slowing down, and made straight for the department's team office. Her bag landed on her desk with a dull thud. She didn't even stop to catch her breath. Ms. Victoria was standing near the window with a file in her hand, and Chloe crossed the floor to her at once. "Good morning, Ms. Victoria." "Good morning, Chloe." Ms. Victoria looked up. "Yes?" "I finished the profile on Chef Caleb that you requested." Chloe held out a thick file with both hands. "There's also a proposal for our collaboration." Ms. Victoria's brows lifted. "Goodness. Did you finish all of this in one day?" "I already had a few ideas from the last recommendation," Chloe explained. "So it didn't take very long." Ms. Victoria took the file, slipped her glasses on, and began to read. The room seemed to quiet around her. She turned the pages slowly until her finger stopped on a single line. "White kimchi ravioli?"
