تسجيل الدخولChloe fled to her room, but closing the door behind her did nothing to quiet what had just happened between her and Adrian. She lay awake until dawn, her thoughts churning, refusing to settle.
The next morning, she made her way to Adrian's residence, where the contract was to be signed. A member of the household staff led her to the sitting room. Adrian was already seated, and Ethan, his secretary, stood across the room. They both looked as though they had been expecting her for some time. Chloe exchanged greetings and took the seat directly opposite Adrian. "Here is the contract," Adrian said, passing her the document Ethan had prepared. Chloe began to read aloud. "This contract between Party A and Party B sets out the terms of a simulated romantic relationship, as well as a requested meeting with the grandfather of Party A." She glanced up at Adrian with an intense look, then returned to the page. "In the event of a breach of contract, the penalty shall be one hundred times the contract amount." "One hundred times?" she snapped. "That's ridiculous!" "I was so dizzy that I had to clear my entire schedule," Adrian said, propping his head against one hand. "I lost an important contract. Do you know what that cost me?" "Even so, this isn't right!" "Suppose someone ordered a chicken from your restaurant and you failed to deliver it." He folded his arms. "What would that do to your reputation?" "That's... I could just make it up to..." "There is no 'next time' in this world," Adrian cut in. "You've lost trust, and you can't put a price on that." "But still, this isn't right," Chloe insisted. "Accept my offer, and I won't sue for damages. I'll even pay you what I promised." He turned to his secretary. "Mr. Ethan, contact legal and tell them to proceed with the lawsuit right away." "No, I'll do it!" Chloe said quickly. "Fine." She snatched up the pen and signed in a rush. "You're very impatient," she muttered, sliding the document across to him. Adrian signed while Chloe sat watching him, unable to look away. When he finished, he handed the contract to Ethan, who had moved to stand behind him. Ethan then led the two of them to a video projection room. "I've summarized the essentials you'll need to carry out this contract," he said, switching on the projector. "You must memorize all of it. His blood type is B. He attended a private school in the Eastern district from elementary through high school. After graduating early, he was admitted to Harvard at eighteen." "Eighteen?" Chloe exclaimed. "Wow." She kept memorizing, half in awe, as Adrian spoke with a smirk. "My only flaw is that there's nothing I'm not good at." "Anyway," he went on, "the meeting with the Chairman is next Sunday. Be sure you've memorized the backstory we've prepared for you by then." "Okay..." Chloe answered, dropping her gaze to the table. Adrian leaned in until she could feel how close he was. "I will not tolerate mistakes. Do you understand?" Chloe nodded. She left the house and boarded a train home, a stack of cards in her hands: her own details and Adrian's. She had to learn her new name, the one she had given him: Stephanie. Chloe was her real name, but she had lied to hide the fact that she worked at his company. "Stephanie, you went to a really good school," she whispered, running through the cards. By the time she reached home, she was exhausted, yet she stayed awake, doing her best to fix every detail in her mind. Morning came. Chloe dressed for work and went straight to the company, cards still in her hands, still reciting. Then something caught her eye. Adrian's face looked down at her from the company billboard. "Stephanie," she murmured to herself, "you certainly snagged yourself an impressive boyfriend." Aria called soon after, hoping to cheer her up with a meal. Chloe went straight to meet her, cards in hand and fatigue weighing on her. "Wow, you're really getting immersed in your new identity, Ms. Stephanie," Aria teased. She plucked the paper from Chloe's fingers and skimmed it. "Is this really worth all the effort?" "What choice do I have?" Chloe said, taking it back. "Otherwise I'd owe him a hundred times the contract amount." "A hundred times? A hundred times, my ass!" Aria burst out laughing. "Did Chloe get spooked by some absurd lie again?" "He was going to press charges," Chloe said. "He would have found out my real name, and that I work for his company. Then what? I'd be fired, and..." She trailed off and lifted the paper to her face. "Look, this is the best I can do." Aria gave an awkward little cough. "So, how's the studying coming along? For your fake boyfriend, I mean." Chloe sighed. "Hmm... The more I learn, the more unbelievable he seems. He was born with a silver spoon, no, a diamond one, in his mouth. He's brilliant, he's good at sports, and on top of that, he's ridiculously handsome. But his parents died in an accident when he was young." "Oh, that," Aria said, lowering her voice to a whisper. "I've heard about it. It's why there are no relatives in any of the subsidiaries." "Really? Why?" "Don't even get me started." Aria motioned for Chloe to lean closer. "Rumor has it that someone was behind the accident that killed his parents." "Really?" "I mean, I have no idea whether it's true. But apparently Chairman Blake, Adrian's grandfather, fired every one of their blood relatives to protect him." "Oh my God," Chloe breathed.Adrian and Ethan walked towards their office, with Ethan trailing a step behind him. "What do you mean, remake the dish? Ms. Victoria said it was rated the highest at the tasting," Ethan said. "I am the president of this company," Adrian replied. "Is any other reason necessary?" "Well, it's very unlike you, sir. And you seem to be treating Ms. Chloe very emotionally." "Mr. Ethan." Adrian's voice sharpened with irritation. "Do you really not realize who Ms. Chloe is?" "Who else would she be?" Ethan asked, confused. "Chloe is Chloe." "That Chloe is... Ms. Stephanie." "What?" Ethan burst into laughter. "What are you talking about? Is that really true?" "Yes. I've already confirmed it," Adrian said, looking straight at him. "Wait. Just wait a second. How is that..." Ethan shook his head in disbelief. "So, what are you going to do now?" "What do you think? I'm going to take my time and make her realize..." Adrian pulled out his chair and sat down. "Just how big a mistake she's ma
Chloe went to work the next day. Something had happened on the way back with Adrian. A ball had struck her in the face, leaving a bruise. She had tried everything she could think of to cover it up. She also had another reason to hide it: she couldn't let Adrian discover who she really was. She arrived with only a few minutes left before the usual morning check, so she hurried toward the elevator with a patch covering one eye. She had just reached out to press the button when Adrian stepped into the same elevator. Chloe froze. In her shock, she let go of the patch, revealing the bruise beneath it. Adrian had seen it. Her secret was out. She quickly pressed the button and fled the elevator at the first opportunity. Adrian stood there, watching her leave. The bruise and the sudden way she had bolted only made him more suspicious. He walked straight to his office, his mind racing with thoughts he couldn't shake. Had he really gone on a date with one of his own employees? He paced a
Chloe and Adrian arrived at their destination. It was his grandfather's house. "Maybe I should have taken something to calm my nerves," Chloe murmured as she stepped onto the grounds. "Are you nervous?" Adrian asked. "Didn't you say you had this under control?" "Mr. Ethan said your grandfather is a very scary, very strict person." Chloe swallowed. "If he finds out we're lying to him..." "If you're scared," Adrian said, "then while we're inside, try to love me for real." "What?" Chloe stared at him, stunned. "Let's go," Adrian said. They stepped inside. Adrian's grandfather was already seated, rubbing his hands together like some kind of mafia boss. "Hey!" Adrian greeted him. "Ms. Stephanie!" the old man exclaimed, turning to a servant standing nearby. "You are as beautiful as I imagined." "Not her. Her," Adrian corrected, looking at Chloe, who was standing behind him. Adrian had no idea that Stephanie wasn't her real name. She was Chloe, an employee of his own company. "Wh
Chloe reached Caleb's restaurant to find the door still open. It must be closing time, she thought. She stepped inside, her eyes sweeping the room."Are there still customers?" she murmured to herself, walking deeper into the restaurant. The file from the company was pressed against her chest.A few steps further, she saw Caleb. He was with a woman, and the two of them were laughing, completely at ease with each other."Come on! You can't just do that all of a sudden. Look, I've spilled it everywhere!" the woman said, holding a glass in her hand as she laughed.Chloe stopped where she stood. She did not know what to do with her feet, her hands, or even her face. Her world felt as though it had been crushed into pieces. She had a crush on Caleb, a very big one, and she had carried it quietly for a long time. Then she saw the worst thing she could have imagined. They kissed, right there in front of her.In a state of shock, Chloe let go of the file. It hit the floor with a loud thud, ma
In the board meeting room, everyone was already seated, the company's executives among them. A few minutes of quiet shuffling passed, and then the door opened and the company president walked in. Adrian. The entire room rose to greet him, a gesture of respect. He gave a small motion of his hand. "Please, take your seats. Let us begin." He lowered himself into his chair and allowed a moment of silence to settle over the table. Then he looked up and called out the next name on the agenda. "Development Team 4." It was Ms. Victoria's group. "Is the chef ready?" President Adrian asked. "Actually..." Ms. Victoria's words began to stumble. "Ms. Chloe was supposed to present for our team." She never got to finish. "Why? Is there a problem?" Adrian asked. "Well, that's..." The sound of the door opening cut her off. Ms. Victoria turned around, and so did everyone else. It was Chloe. She slipped into the boardroom on her toes, her face and half her body hidden behind a
Chloe hurried into the building, praying she wouldn't be late. She signed in at the front desk, barely slowing down, and made straight for the department's team office. Her bag landed on her desk with a dull thud. She didn't even stop to catch her breath. Ms. Victoria was standing near the window with a file in her hand, and Chloe crossed the floor to her at once. "Good morning, Ms. Victoria." "Good morning, Chloe." Ms. Victoria looked up. "Yes?" "I finished the profile on Chef Caleb that you requested." Chloe held out a thick file with both hands. "There's also a proposal for our collaboration." Ms. Victoria's brows lifted. "Goodness. Did you finish all of this in one day?" "I already had a few ideas from the last recommendation," Chloe explained. "So it didn't take very long." Ms. Victoria took the file, slipped her glasses on, and began to read. The room seemed to quiet around her. She turned the pages slowly until her finger stopped on a single line. "White kimchi ravioli?"
