I woke before dawn with the wolf already pacing.

She had stopped waiting for permission. Since the night Draven's scroll arrived, she stirred whenever I closed my eyes and rose with me in the dark, and by the time I pulled on my boots she was a low hum under my ribs, silver and impatient.

Not yet, I told her, lacing the left boot too tight. Let me get there first.

The training yard was empty and gray with frost. I stood in the middle of it, in the same place where Kael had once watched my eyes

The snow came early that year, and it stayed.I watched it from my bed through the tall window Kael had cut into the east wall of our bedroom the year the twins were born, so that I could see the orchard from my pillow. The branches were white and bare. Somewhere under all that quiet, the roots were sleeping, waiting for spring.I did not think I would see the spring. I was not sorry."You're looking at the window as though you're saying goodbye to it," Kael said from the chair beside me."I'm saying hello to the snow.""Liar." But his voice was soft, and his hand, wrapped around mine, did not loosen. He had not left that chair in two days, except when my daughter shooed him out to eat, and even then he ate standing in the doorway where he could see me.I turned my head on the pillow and looked at him. Truly looked, the way I had on the morning I first woke beside him, with my heart in my throat and no idea who he was. Those eyes had not changed. Everything around them had, and I love

The winter Kael's hair turned completely white, he blamed me."Forty years of your ledgers," he said, standing at the window with a cup of tea going cold in his hand. "Forty years of 'Kael, the granary count is off.' It was bound to do something to a man."I laughed, and the laugh turned into a cough, and he was across the room before it ended, one hand on my back, the other taking my cup. That was how our mornings went now. We had traded the sprint for a slow, careful dance, and neither of us minded the steps."I'm fine," I said."I know." He did not move his hand. "Humor me."I let him. I had learned, somewhere in the long middle of our life, that letting someone care for you was not the same as being weak. It had taken me a long time to learn it. The girl who had stood in a doorway at Ironclaw, apologizing for taking up space, would never have believed it.The pack changed around us the way a river changes its banks, so slowly that you only noticed when you looked back.My son carr

I knew it was a dream, because I was walking without pain.My knees had been aching for years. They ached on stairs, and in the cold, and on the long walks that I still took along the northern ridge out of stubbornness. But in the dream I moved lightly, barefoot, over a surface as smooth and pale as polished bone, and there was nothing in my body but a quiet, buoyant ease.I looked around.I was standing on a vast, still plain. There was no grass, no tree, no landmark of any kind. The ground was a soft, luminous silver, and it ran flat to the horizon in every direction, glimmering faintly, as though it had been dusted with crushed pearl. Above me, the sky was the deep, clear black of a winter midnight, crowded with stars so large and so close that I felt I could have reached up and gathered them in my hands. And in the center of the sky, enormous and serene, hung the moon.It was fuller than I had ever seen it. It filled a third of the heavens, round and white and brilliant, and its l

My granddaughter was seven years old, and she had decided that I was a story. It was not an unreasonable conclusion. Every child in the pack knew the songs. They had grown up on tales of the silver wolf and the battle in the valley, and my name was stitched into the edges of half the lullabies in the territory. So when she found me sitting alone in the orchard one afternoon, with a cup of tea and a book I was not reading, she stopped in the long grass and stared at me with her silver eyes very wide."You're real," she said."I'm afraid so.""I thought you'd be taller."I laughed so hard that I spilled my tea. "I thought so too, once. It never happened."She considered me gravely. Then she came forward, climbed onto the bench beside me with the unselfconscious efficiency of the very young, and tucked her feet under her. A moment later, her small brother appeared at the edge of the trees, five years old and dragging a stick, and stopped when he saw us."Is she telling a story?" he whisp

Kael wore a groove in the corridor floor.I had never seen him so restless. He had been pacing since midnight, up and down the long stone passage outside the birthing rooms, with his hands clasped behind his back and his jaw set like a man awaiting a verdict. Every few minutes he stopped at the door, and listened, and turned away again."You'll wear through the flagstones," I said."They've been there four hundred years. They can take it.""I'm not worried about the flagstones. I'm worried about you.""I'm perfectly fine." He did not look at me. "How long does it usually take?""You were there. You held my hand through two of them.""That was different. Then it was you." He rubbed his face. "This is my son's wife. My son. It's his first. I do not know what to do with my hands."I laughed, and patted the bench beside me. "Come and sit. You're making the healers nervous."He sat. He did not stay sat. After a moment, he was up again, and I let him go.It was a long night.I had thought I

The Accord was signed on a bright day in early summer, in the great hall at Shadowclaw, with the doors thrown wide to the sun.I had never seen the hall so full. Every bench had been dragged in from the yard. People stood three deep along the walls, and the rafters rang with a low, expectant murmur, like a hive before swarming. Banners hung from the beams in a dozen colors, red and black and green and white, each one the sign of a pack that had spent generations avoiding every other. They were all here now. Twelve territories. Twelve Alphas, seated at one long table, with their Lunas beside them."I think I might be sick," said my younger daughter, at my elbow."You look perfectly calm.""I am calm. I'm calm and nauseated." She pressed her palms against her skirt. "Three years, Mama. Three years of letters and journeys and meetings that went nowhere. And now it's just... a table.""It's a very good table.""It's a very old table. It's been scratched by five generations of Alphas argui
