Chapter 1

My tutor, who had told me to simply call him "Shane", sent me another message.

"Is that still too confusing? Then let me show you how to solve it from several other angles."

Staring at the three different solutions he provided me, I felt a lump lodge in my throat.

In the past, every time I asked my childhood friend, Nicholas Lund, how to solve a problem, he would frown and say, "I've explained a similar concept to you before, haven't I? Stop making me repeat myself all the time.

When he was in a particularly terrible mood, he would even toss my pencil aside and snap, "Think on it yourself."

Eventually, I didn't even dare tell him when I didn't understand his explanations. Instead, I watched his mood closely. It was as though it was wrong of me to ask even one more question.

Yet, this super cheap online tutor on the other side of this chat wasn't scornful of me for being slow.

He broke down the problem and explained it to me, saying it was okay if I didn't understand the question. I just had to take my time.

Through the open window of Nicholas' house, I could hear him gently explaining a question to the school belle, Hailey Lane.

"It's fine. Here, let me explain it to you one more time."

From where I stood outside the door, an epiphany suddenly dawned on me.

As it turned out, it wasn't that Nicholas was impatient—he had simply been unwilling to be patient with me.

Besides that, I realized that it wasn't that I was born slow or that I was hopelessly stupid. I had simply been forcing myself to be smaller and smaller over the years due to his impatience with me.

My phone vibrated with a message from Shane, who had sent me a final study plan. He also told me to stop looking at others and focus on my studies instead.

Recently, I had been living by Nicholas' moods. Even a slight furrow of his brow would be enough to make me lose an entire night's sleep.

I had always thought it was because I had feelings for him, but now I understood it was likely an instinctive fear response he had trained into me over all these years.

That night, while I worked on some test questions on an audio-only call with Shane, I got stuck on the third question and let my mind wander.

A smooth male voice sounded in my ear. "Only spend one and a half minutes on each question. Skip it if you still can't figure it out by then."

"How did you know?"

"The sound of you flipping pages stopped."

I ended up getting three out of ten questions wrong, which made me feel rather embarrassed.

However, he comforted me calmly, "You did better than I expected. Your rhythm is just a little off."

At 11:30 pm on the dot, he stopped our study session.

I instinctively protested, "I can still continue. Nicholas says that the stupid bird needs to take off earlier to get the worm."

Silence filled the other end of the line for two seconds.

"You're not a stupid bird, nor does anyone have the right to make you feel that you're dumb."

When I heard that, my eyes instantly reddened.

The past 12 years with Nicholas had ingrained in me the habit of doubting myself. But it only took this stranger ten minutes of explaining a question to me for me to feel, for the first time in my life, that I wasn't actually stupid.

"You're really good. You just need to take it slow."

…

The next day, I didn't leave my error log on Nicholas' desk liked I used to.

During a break between classes, he finally couldn't take it anymore and approached me. "So, do you know how to answer that question from yesterday yet?"

I didn't even bother lifting my head as I replied, "The tutor taught me."

His face darkened. "Marissa Zinch, even if you're throwing a temper tantrum, you should know your limits. As if an online tutor could possibly understand you more than I do."

If this had been in the past, I would've already panicked and hastily tried to explain that I wasn't throwing a tantrum, that I still trusted him most, and that I was simply worried about bothering him.

However, this time, all I felt was a bone-deep weariness. "It's just explaining how to solve a question. Whether someone understands me or not doesn't matter."

That surprised Nicholas, who froze in place.

At that moment, Hailey sidled over with a juice box and uttered gently, "Marissa, how about I return Nicholas to you this afternoon?"

Lowering my head, I tucked the practice papers away. "No need. I have my tutor now."

As if on cue, my phone lit up with a text from Shane.

"Take a 15-minute nap after lunch. We'll start working on Physics questions this afternoon."

I let out a soft chuckle as I read the message.

Nicholas' gaze zeroed in on my phone, and for the first time, a hint of inexplicable panic flashed in his eyes.

The day the exam scores were announced, I was alone in my room, checking my results. My palms were damp with sweat when I moved the mouse to click on the button. At that moment, my phone vibrated with a message from Shane."No matter how much you scored, you're not a stupid bird."A laugh burst from my lips before I clicked my mouse. The moment my score popped up, I stared at the screen for a very, very long time.It was higher than I had expected, enough to get me into Jorington University. Not just that, but it was also enough for me to pick a course that I actually wanted.I laughed joyously, relieved.Hearing the commotion, Mom knocked on my door and came in. "Marissa, how did you do?"Instead of answering, I turned my screen around so that she could see for herself.Mom was stunned at first, but then tears began rolling down her cheeks. "How wonderful!"Dad stood by the doorway, his lips moving soundlessly.Ever since that day at the school, he had rarely spoken to me.

At three in the afternoon, I headed to the bookstore by the school gates.Shane sat by the window, a glass of warm milk and a sheaf of printed paper on the table in front of him. When I sat opposite him, he pushed the glass over to me. "Does your face still hurt?"I shook my head. "No."Handing me the sheaf of papers, he explained, "Your study plan for the next 20 days."I flipped through the pages, noting that the first ten days were for solidifying the multiple-choice questions and lab work. The next seven days were for keeping my skills sharp, and the last three days were for avoiding difficult questions. An empty column sat at the end of each day, prompting me to ask, "What is this?""It's for you to write down how you did for that day.""I'm the one who will be writing it?""Yeah." He looked me straight in the eyes, his voice calm as he said, "From now on, I won't be the one commenting on whether you did okay or not that day. You'll be the judge of that yourself."I st

The next morning, I entered the classroom, only to be greeted by an incredibly odd atmosphere.Nobody brought up my score again, nor did anyone say that I had stolen the answer sheet. However, the surreptitious glances they threw at me today seemed even more conspicuous than their whispers had been yesterday. When I reached my desk, I noticed several slips of paper stuffed into the drawer."Sorry about yesterday.""I didn't mean to jump on the bandwagon.""Marissa, you sure are amazing."I read through each of them, yet not a hint of emotion stirred within me.As it turned out, humans really were capable of changing their attitudes at the drop of a hat. Just yesterday, they suspected I had cheated on the exam. Yet today, they were complimenting me for being brilliant.Neither their doubt nor their approval was what I needed to use to prove myself anymore.During the break for first period, Ms. Dwight called Hailey out of the classroom, instantly silencing everyone.Halfway t

I kept my head held high as I made my way back to the classroom. From the way my cheek still burned, I knew that the handprint on it had to be really obvious. Nonetheless, I had no intention of hiding it anymore. Why should I have to keep my head bowed and pretend that nothing had happened?Shane kept pace beside me, not saying a word. Right as we neared the classroom door, he suddenly stopped. "Marissa."I turned to look at him, at which point he returned my backpack to me. "The truth will prevail. There's no need to explain yourself, as you've already done more than enough of that."I tightened my hold on my backpack strap and nodded. When I pushed open the door and entered the classroom, everyone immediately looked over at me. Some were shocked to see the bright red mark on my face, while others guiltily averted their gaze. Some even kept their heads bowed as they pretended to work on their homework, yet their pencils never moved across the paper.Ignoring them all, I head

Ms. Dwight took my phone and began looking through my complete chat history with Shane.I stood there, half my face still burning and throbbing with pain from Dad's slap.Shane was beside me, not too far away but not too close either.Ms. Dwight took a long time reading the chat history, eventually realizing that neither of us had ever said anything over the line. Then, she glanced through the papers Shane had brought. At last, she told Mr. Marron, "The sources for these questions are all publicly available materials, so it's normal for the question patterns to be similar. Marissa's approach to solving these problems also matches the patterns reflected in her practice work."Nearby, Mom started crying. "Marissa…"She reached a hand out toward me, but I subconsciously stepped back, leaving it hanging in mid-air.When I remained silent, Mr. Marron's tense expression eased a little, though it was still stern."Ms. Zinch, it seems like there's no evidence proving that you had acces

Calm washed over me when I read the message.Turning my phone to show everyone the screen, I said, "He's here."Dad, who was still fuming with anger, let out a cold laugh. "Perfect timing! I'm dying to see what sort of despicable thug would dare come to the school after tricking a high-schooler who's about to take her college entrance exam."Mom paled further and instinctively gripped my hand tightly. "Marissa, stop this nonsense."A frown marred Nicholas' brow. "Marissa, you even told him to come to the school?"I stared at him, suddenly feeling a wave of exhaustion sweep over me. "Weren't you the ones who wanted to know who he is?"Silence reigned in the office for several seconds. Then, Mr. Marron picked up his landline phone and called the guard at the security booth.Soon after, footsteps sounded outside the office.I instinctively raised my head to look over, only to see a young man dressed in a white shirt standing outside the door. He was thin and shouldered a black b
