Adrian came before breakfast.

I heard the car first, then the two knocks, and I was down the stairs in my dressing gown before I'd decided to be. Mia was already in the kitchen, holding the kettle like a weapon. Adrian stood in the doorway in yesterday's shirt with his phone in his hand.

"My contact called at dawn," he said. "I wanted you to hear it from me."

"Sit," I said.

He didn't. He leaned against the counter, and Mia put a cup in his hand without asking, and he held it without drinking.

The room went quiet the way a pond does when a stone is held over it.I'd expected noise. I'd braced for a crowd, a wall of voices and glass. Instead, as the doors swung wide and Ash drew me through them, the whole hall seemed to turn at once, hundreds of faces in a soft gold light, and the sound dropped away to a murmur. Investors. Board members. Men I'd poured wine for at our own table. Cameras along the walls, small and patient. At the far end, on a low platform, stood a podium and a single microphone.*The surprise.*"Darling," Ash said, warm and soft, close to my ear. "Don't be alarmed. I've asked them to give us a moment.""A moment.""For you to say a few words." His thumb pressed my hand. "They've been so worried. We've all been so worried. I thought it would mean the world if they heard it from you."My pulse did something strange and cold and perfectly steady. We walked the length of the hall. People parted. A woman I half knew touched my sleeve and said my name, and I smile

They put me in a room with no windows and told me to wait.It was a plain, quiet room in a building I'd never seen, somewhere near the venue, with a table and four chairs and a kettle that no one touched. Adrian's people had arranged it. They'd moved me through a side door with the driver at my elbow and the woman from the briefing at my left shoulder, as promised, and then they'd left me alone with a mirror.I sat for what felt like a very long time. The navy dress hung on me like a held breath. I had checked the hem twice, and the pocket over my heart, and the small folded square of paper that I had not read to the end. I had put on almost no color. *Simple,* he'd said. *Nothing that draws the eye.*"You're doing it again," said the woman at my shoulder.I looked up. She had been in the room the whole time, standing by the door with her hands loose at her sides, as quiet as furniture. I'd never learned her name. She'd said it once, and I'd forgotten it in the rush."Doing what?""Re

"There's something I…"He stopped.I watched it happen. The sentence had been moving, quick and certain, the way a man steps off a curb, and then it simply wasn't. His mouth stayed a little open. His eyes held mine across the two bowls and the small gold circle of the lamp, and I saw him look down at the thing he'd been about to say, the way you'd look down at the floor and find it a very long way off."Adrian?""I'm sorry." He let out a breath that was almost a laugh. "I had it. I had the whole sentence.""What was it?""It was a good one." He rubbed his thumb along the edge of the table. "I'd been working on it for days.""Practicing again.""Don't." But the corner of his mouth moved. "It's the worst thing I've ever tried to do. I've negotiated with men who wanted my throat. I've sat across from lawyers for eleven hours. And I can't say three words to a woman in the kitchen."My heart did something odd and unsteady.*Three words.*He didn't say which three. He didn't have to. I sat

The message came at dusk, while I was ironing a dress I didn't need to iron.I'd been doing it for something to do with my hands. Mia had hung the navy dress on the back of the door that morning, and I'd looked at it for a long time, and then I'd found the iron in the hall cupboard and started on a seam that was already flat. The steam rose. The house was very quiet. My phone lit on the ironing board.*Where are you tonight?*I set the iron on its heel. I read it once. It was the same line as before, in the same plain type, from the same unfamiliar number.*Home,* I wrote. *Getting ready.*The reply came at once.*Good. Sleep well. Tomorrow, at the door. Don't be late.*I let out a slow breath. That was all. I almost put the phone down. Then three dots appeared, hung, vanished, and appeared again.*I've been thinking about your father lately. A good man. Pity.*I stood very still. The iron ticked as it cooled. Somewhere in the house, a pipe knocked, and I heard it as though through wa

My lawyer called while I was brushing my teeth.I almost let it go to voicemail. Then I saw the name, and the hour, and put down the brush with a hand that had already begun to shake."Elena." No greeting. She never wasted one. "Are you somewhere you can talk?""I'm in the bathroom.""Then sit on the edge of the bath." I heard paper moving. "An editor rang me ten minutes ago. A reputable one. They've been sent photographs, and they're doing what decent outlets do, which is ask for a comment before they print. The deadline's this evening."I sat on the edge of the bath."Photographs of what?""You. And Mr. Cross." A pause, dry and careful. "I haven't seen them. The editor described two. One is you leaving a building. The other is on a porch."The tiles were very cold under my feet."Under a blanket," my lawyer said. "I'm sorry. That's the word she used."I closed my eyes.---I was at Adrian's by nine. The driver didn't speak, and I didn't ask him to, and when I came through the study

"More than before. He's gone back through the arrangements for next week and changed half of them.""Changed how?""He's moved the photographer. He wants the front entrance cleared for his arrival and no one else's. He's asked for the guest list twice, and the second time he asked whether anyone from my side had been invited." Adrian looked at me. "He's hired a private security firm. The kind that doesn't put its name on anything.""He's tightening," Mia said quietly
