Chapter Twenty-Three

The dragons claim

The echo of the battlefield faded entirely as Emmy stood on the white-marble terrace of her grandmother’s sanctuary.

The ambient silver residue from King Cato’s shattered stakes no longer burned her skin. Instead, the newly integrated currents of her wolf, vampire, and dragon lineages surged through her veins in absolute, magnificent harmony.

Her amethyst-and-gold eyes locked onto Ignisvath as he rose from his knee, his massive frame radiating a fierce, primal relief that fractured the cold night air.

“The dawn is ours, little wolf,” Ignisvath rasped, his voice a deep, velvet growl that vibrated straight through her marrow.

Before Emmy could offer a single word of reply, his molten gold eyes flared with an unyielding, possessive light.

He stepped into her space, his massive arms wrapping securely around her waist, and hoisted her body flush against his dark, steel-clad breastplate.

With a sudden, explosive snap of his shoulders, his colossal obsidian-black dragon wings ripped outward from his back, catching the midnight wind.

He didn’t use the quiet, instantaneous pull of his teleportation magic this time.

His dragon demanded to physically conquer the distance between the lowlands and his throne.

With a thunderous beat of his wings that sent a gale-force wind ripping through the weeping willow grove below, Ignisvath launched them straight into the stratosphere.

Emmy let out a breathless, joyful gasp, her hands instinctively wrapping around his neck as the wind whipped her dark braids behind her.

The neutral valley, the ruined clearing, and the distant, closed borders of the Bloodmoon Pack shrank into nothingness beneath them.

They tore through the silver clouds, climbing higher until the air turned pristine, frozen, and completely empty of anyone else’s laws.

Yet Emmy felt no cold.

The raw, predatory baseline heat of Ignisvath’s body was skyrocketing, a liquid furnace that seeped through his armor and dissolved completely into her bones through their unbreakable soul-tether.

“You are my hoard now, Emmy,” Ignisvath whispered fiercely against her ear, his massive wings beating in a slow, commanding rhythm as they crested the highest volcanic peak of the Dragontooth Mountains.

“Body, mind, and soul.

“The mountain will never let you go.”

With a sudden, steep dive, he swept down toward the highest, most private spire of the Aethelgard Citadel.

They bypassed the grand courtyards and the iron swinging bridges where Koran and the other warriors were celebrating their victory, landing with a heavy, echoing thud directly on the private obsidian terrace of the royal bedchamber.

The heavy glass doors melted open to welcome their king, and the moment they stepped over the threshold into the dark, velvet-lined sanctuary, the restraint Ignisvath had maintained throughout the war shattered into absolute dust.

He kicked the doors shut behind them, the latch locking with a final, heavy click that sealed them away from the rest of the universe.

Ignisvath didn’t lay her down gently.

His dragon was entirely fronting, consumed by a fierce, centuries-old necessity to thoroughly claim the mate he had nearly lost to the silver stakes.

He backed her aggressively against the massive, polished volcanic stone pillar beside the grand canopy bed, his heavy thighs pinning her lower body against the dark rock.

His large, calloused hands moved with frantic, desperate precision, unbuckling the heavy leather straps of his breastplate and letting the warped steel armor crash heavily to the floor.

“The full moon apex has met its master,” Ignisvath growled against her lips, his breath carrying the scent of dark mountain mead, smoke, and wild pine.

“Look at me, Emmy.

“Taste the fire.”

He crashed his lips against hers in a bruising explosion of passion that left Emmy’s head spinning.

It wasn’t a question.

It was an absolute declaration of sovereignty.

His kiss deepened, demanding and predatory, and Emmy’s heightened vampire senses erupted beneath the force of it.

Her fangs pricked the inside of her lower lip as her inner wolf completely yielded to the dominant heat of his chest.

She wrapped her arms fiercely around his neck, her nails digging into the dark hair at the base of his skull as she arched against him.

Ignisvath let out a low, guttural roar of pure animal satisfaction, his hands sliding down to grip the hem of her hunting tunic.

The remaining distance between them disappeared beneath frantic hands and discarded clothing, the golden threads of their soul-tether glowing brighter with every breath.

His touch moved over her waist and hips, leaving visible trails of draconic magic crackling against her skin.

He dragged his mouth away from hers, trailing feverish kisses down the curve of her jaw to the sensitive hollow of her throat.

Emmy’s fingers tightened against his shoulders as the overwhelming intensity of their bond made every touch feel magnified.

“You are burning with me, little wolf,” Ignisvath rasped against her skin.

He lifted her effortlessly and carried her the short distance to the massive velvet-lined bed, lowering them into the dark, luxurious furs.

The contrast between the cool velvet beneath Emmy and the furnace of Ignisvath’s body above her sent another wave of heat through their joined bond.

Her amethyst-and-gold eyes locked onto his molten gaze.

For a moment, neither moved.

Everything they had survived seemed to exist between them—the silver clearing, her father’s fear, Cato’s hatred, the war, the amulet, the full moon, and the terrifying moment when Emmy’s heart had nearly stopped.

Ignisvath lowered his forehead to hers.

“I nearly lost you.”

The rawness in his voice changed something inside her.

Emmy lifted her hand to his face.

“But you didn’t.”

His eyes closed briefly beneath her touch.

“No,” he whispered. “And I never intend to.”

He kissed her again.

This time there was still hunger in it, but beneath the fire was something deeper—a fierce relief that neither of them needed to put into words.

The soul-tether flared between their chests, visible golden light weaving around the violet glow of the Agatha amulet.

Emmy could feel him completely now.

Not merely his desire.

His fear.

His relief.

His centuries of loneliness.

The dragon who had ruled an ancient kingdom had finally found someone whose heartbeat answered his own.

And Emmy understood that he could feel her just as clearly.

Her fear of losing herself.

Her grief for Jasmine.

Her love for Dimitrius despite everything that had happened.

Her uncertainty about becoming a Queen.

And beneath all of it, the choice she had finally made.

Him.

Ignisvath drew her deeper into the dark cocoon of his wings as the golden-and-violet magic surrounding them intensified.

The rest of the night belonged only to them.

There were no councils.

No pack laws.

No silver stakes.

No countdown.

Only the Dragon King and the woman who had survived the fire to stand beside him.

When at last the violent energy of the soul-tether settled, Ignisvath held Emmy tightly against his chest beneath the shelter of his wings.

His heartbeat struck beneath her ear in the same slow, powerful rhythm now living inside her own chest.

The fire had settled.

The countdown was broken.

And resting in the heart of his fortress, Emmy understood that the claim between them was no longer something waiting to happen.

It was complete.

The Dragon King had finally, permanently claimed his Queen.

Chapter Twenty-Two The Apex of Night The celestial wheel had finally fattened into a blinding, silver disk of absolute light, hanging directly at the zenith of a cloudless midnight sky. It was the night of the full moon apex. The seven-day countdown had bled down to its final, agonizing hours, and the neutral valley surrounding Caliana’s ash-wood manor was entirely suffocating under the weight of an approaching metaphysical storm. Inside the grand conservatory of the manor, the air was a battlefield of conflicting supernatural energies. The living white-marble floor had been carved with deep, sweeping protective runes by grandmother Caliana, while great-grandmother Brinley stood near the arched glass entry, her kind, human hands gripping a silver-tipped dagger—ready to walk directly into a supernatural crossfire to defend her lineage. Emmy sat in the exact center of the runic circle, her legs crossed, her breathing shallow and ragged. The rejection had reached its lethal peak.
