PIPER’S POV

When Rowan first told me about the meeting, it felt like someone had driven a pin straight through my heart. He said it so casually, as though it was the most ordinary thing in the world.

“Alexa called,” he said, slipping his watch onto his wrist. “She’s seen the ads. She thinks we can expand the reach and push it onto our page, build some real traction. I told her I’d meet her tomorrow night at nine to talk about it.”

His voice was calm, professional, detached. To him, this was business. To me? It was a wound I couldn’t stop pressing on.

I forced a smile, gripping the mug in my hand a little tighter to stop myself from shaking. “If it’s business, then I trust you.”

The words were smooth, but inside, I was anything but calm.

The truth? It wasn’t Rowan I doubted.

It was Alexa.

From the moment I saw her, I knew she was dangerous. The way she moved, the confidence she carried like perfume, the sly smile that came whenever Rowan entered the room. She wasn’t just another collea

  • Ties That Bind   A STEP TOO FAR

ROWAN’S POVMy mind was a storm I couldn’t quiet. Thoughts darted back and forth, crashing into each other like waves against rocks. Piper. Where was she? What was she doing? Was she safe? Or worse—was she already planning her life without me?I couldn’t focus on work, couldn’t even eat properly. Every time my phone buzzed, my heart leapt, only to crash when it wasn’t her. And deep down, I knew why—she had blocked me. She had cut me off completely.I sat in my office, tapping my fingers restlessly against the desk, until finally, I decided I couldn’t keep spiraling like this. I needed advice. Someone who could see things clearer than me.So, I went to see my lawyer. At least, I needed to talk to someone before I ran mad. I thought she would be at Diana’s place but she didn’t sound like Piper was with her at all.He was an older man with sharp eyes behind square glasses, always calm even when chaos ruled. I sat across from him, wringing my hands like a child.“You look troubled, Rowan

  • Ties That Bind   ECHOES OF HEARTACHE

PIPER’S POVMorning sunlight spilled across the edge of the curtains, painting streaks of gold across the polished wooden floor. I stood in front of the mirror, brushing my hair with more force than necessary, as though tugging the strands could pull away the storm in my chest. Today was the day. The flight to South Africa. A so-called business vacation with Ruben.I should have felt excitement. Or maybe relief. But what I felt was a weight pressing against my ribs, heavy and sharp. As I adjusted the collar of my blouse, my phone buzzed on the dresser. A name I hadn’t expected lit up the screen: the guy I’d met at the restaurant. I hesitated before answering, biting down on my lower lip.“Hello?” I said, cautious.“Hey, Piper,” his voice came smooth, cheerful, oblivious to the wreckage of my life. “I was wondering if you’d like to meet up again. Maybe a late lunch or dinner? You seemed… well, interesting.”I closed my eyes, sighing through my nose. “I can’t. I’m not available. I’m ac

  • Ties That Bind   MIDNIGHT PRESENCE

PIPER’S POVThe corridor outside my room felt oddly familiar…lamps casting soft pools of light, the faint scent of lemon oil that always meant Ruben’s staff had been through, smoothing and arranging. I closed the door softly behind me and let out a breath I hadn’t realized I’d been holding. For a moment I just stood there, forehead resting against the cool wood, listening to the house settle. It sounded deceptively peaceful. My phone buzzed before I could even set my bag down. Diana. I thumbed it open with a small, tired smile. She’d calmed down a lot since the old days—less frantic, more practical—so I answered right away.“Pip! Are you okay? Rowan called looking for you like a lunatic. He said—he said he was worried.” Diana’s voice was all tinged with panic and concern in a way that made me want to laugh and cry at the same time.I hid a strand of hair behind my ear. “He called?” I kept my tone even. If I let it crack, Diana would get nervous and pester me all night. “Yes. He ca

  • Ties That Bind   TANGLED SHADOWS

PIPER’S POVI jolted awake with a start. My heart was pounding, my hands clammy as I looked around the room. The light still glowed faintly from the nightstand where I had turned it on hours ago. No figure stood there now, no presence lurked in the shadows. Has it been a dream? My mind still wrestled with the possibility, but the exhaustion from yesterday had swallowed me whole.I rubbed my face, trying to shake off the fog. The clock on the bedside table blinked at 9:12 AM. My phone buzzed, dragging my eyes toward it. Ten missed calls. All from Rowan. A lump formed in my throat. I wasn’t ready to face him. Not after what I’d seen. Not after the chip had burned holes into my trust. My thumb hovered over the screen, tempted to call him back, but the knock on my door interrupted my thoughts about Rowan and I was glad it did.“Piper?” Ruben’s voice came, calm, steady, the way it always was.“Yes?” I forced my voice not to shake to act like it was all good.He opened the door slightly, h

  • Ties That Bind   RUBEN’S WEB

PIPER’S POVThe rooftop bar hummed with music and distant city light, but all of it felt muffled under the weight pressing at my chest. Ruben had been oddly gentle when he first sat beside me…businesslike, then almost fatherly in a way that made my skin prickle. He didn’t pry; he didn’t ask the blunt, cruel questions that would’ve made me crumble. Instead he offered small, steady statements that, disturbingly, felt easier to accept than the honest rage I knew I should be feeling.“So,” he said after a long silence, watching my fingers toy with the band in my purse. “You’re not in the mood to talk about what’s wrong with you?”“No,” I said flatly. The word snipped the air like a blade. I didn’t have the energy to explain. Not to him, not to anyone. He raised his hands, palms outward, like a man trying to show he meant no harm. “Alright. Later then. If you want.”I nodded, thankful for the simple permission to be quiet. He took a sip of his drink and watched the city for a moment. “Yo

  • Ties That Bind   EXPOSED SECRET

PIPER’S POVHappiness is such a fragile thing. One moment you cradle it in your hands, the next, it slips through your fingers like water. That evening, I felt genuinely happy. I wanted to surprise Rowan by arranging his room myself instead of leaving it to the staff. It felt like a small act of love, a way to remind him of how far we’d come.I hummed softly to myself as I dusted the table, straightened the books on the shelf, and fluffed the pillows. Everything was going fine—until curiosity got the better of me.I pulled open one of his drawers, smiling to myself. “What are you hiding, Archer?” I teased softly, half expecting to find some forgotten cufflinks or an old notebook. Instead, my fingers brushed against something small and metallic.A chip.It looked ordinary, harmless, almost like it belonged to a camera. For a second, I thought maybe it held movies or documents from work. I shouldn’t have touched it..I know I shouldn’t have. But some part of me wanted to see a little mor
