Ella's POV

Alpha John's eyes locked onto the tattoo on Theron's arm.I watched the change happen. The fury drained out of his face so fast it was like watching a bonfire doused in snow — the redness, the bulging veins, all of it vanishing, replaced by something gray and tight around his mouth.Fear.

"You're from the palace?"

His voice had lost its roar. It came out thin. Careful.

I blinked. "He— I mean, yes. Of course he can cut it. He's—" What was he? "—my mate. He cuts meat."Theron's mouth twitched. He took the loin, and I watched him lay it out, and I will admit — grudgingly, silently, and only to myself — that my father would have approved. Long, even strokes. No wasted motion. The slices fell like pages off a book. The woman left with her purchase and an expression I could only describe as dazed. The next one came four minutes later. Then two together. Then a line. They asked about the ribs. The chops. Whether the sausage was truly fresh. They did not, to a woman, seem particularly interested in the meat."He's handsomer than Caleb," one of them whispered, not quietly enough, and her friend hissed at her, and neither of them looked away from Theron's forearms."He looks at her, though," the friend whispered back. "Did you see? The whole time, he looks at her."By midday, the hooks were empty. Every cut gone. The coin pouch heavy against my hip, heavier t

Ella's POV "Just Theron. For now." I nodded slowly. For now. It was more of an answer than anyone had given me in a week. I remembered he was still bleeding. I'd seen the spots darkening his bandages all morning. I reached for his shoulder. "Let me check your—" He moved back. Not fast — he was too controlled for fast! My hand closed on empty air. "Your wounds—" "Are fine." Flat. Final. I frowned. This morning, when I'd dressed the gash on his side, the edges had looked wrong. Pink instead of red. Closed instead of weeping. I'd told myself it was the light. The cold. My own exhaustion. No one healed like that. Not in a day. Not from a wound like that. "Theron—" "I said they're fine." Then, softer: "You should rest." There was a wall behind those words. I'd built enough of them myself to recognize the masonry. I let it go — for now — and pushed myself up off the ground, dusting snow from my dress. "Fine. Then you rest too. Really rest. No pacing, no li

It came out thin. Careful. The palace. The word landed in my skull and rang like a struck bell. The palace meant the Lycan kingdom — the throne that ruled over every wolf pack, from the northern tundra to the southern ports. A place so far above Moonshadow that it might as well have been the moon itself. We spoke of it the way we spoke of weather: distant, enormous, and none of our business.I lifted my head and looked at Theron. He stood beside me, one hand still steadying my elbow — firm, warm, unhurried. Blood spotted his bandages. His face was calm in a way that made my stomach tighten, because no man standing in front of Alpha John had

Ella's POVNobody moved. The silence was so complete I could hear snow falling off the eaves, could hear the enforcers' labored breathing as they knelt with their faces pressed into frozen dirt. Thirty wolves — Warriors, pack members, people I'd known my whole life — all bowed to the ground by a single command. From a rogue.Theron hadn't moved. He stood in the doorway, bare-chested, bandages dark with seeped blood, one hand braced against the rotting wood of the frame. He simply looked at me, then walked over and helped me to my feet.I leaned against his shoulder as I stood up."Who — who are you?" Margaret's voice came from somewhere in the crowd, thin and shaking.Theron didn't answer. He reached out and gently wiped the blood from my forehead. My heart began to race.Sally pulled herself upright. Her legs trembled, but her spine straightened."This is a trick." Her voice cracked on the first word, then steadied. She pointed at me, at Theron, her finger jerking between us. "She's

Theron's POV I found her covered in bruises. My wolf, Fenrir, snarled inside my chest. The bloodlust hit like a fever — hot, sudden, patient. I wanted to find whoever did this. I wanted to take them apart. "Who hurt you?" I asked. "It should be me, I'm the one who's defied the Moon Goddess." She smiled, but it was the wrong kind. Bitter. Tired. I didn't like this version of her. Yesterday she'd been something else — bright, stubborn, blushing when she changed my bandages. Now a sadness clung to her like smoke. It soaked into the air between us I didn't like it at all. "Where's Lily?" she asked. "A woman named Greta took her in. They know each other well." She relaxed, just a fraction. Her shoulders dropped half an inch. "Now," I said. "Tell me what's going on with you." Ella took a breath. “My parents died a week ago. Someone branded them traitors — no proof, no trial, just a label slapped on a dead man's name. But nobody cares about the truth when the Alpha has already de

I couldn't process it.“What did you just say? Who is your mate?”"Sally. The Alpha's daughter. She is my chosen mate." He adjusted his grip. "Now apologize. To Sally."My eyes went wide. Not because Caleb was standing me up. I'd already felt that coming — the wild rose and honey on his collar yesterday, the way he stumbled on the word friend, the way he walked away from my door without looking back while my parents were barely cold in the ground.I'd known he was pulling away. What I hadn't known — what hit me now like a blade between the ribs — was who he'd been pulling toward.Sally.The irony was that no one else even knew about our relationship. I'd kept us a secret all this time to protect his future, only to be rewarded with betrayal. So what was I holding back for now? I had nothing left to lose."Funny, I am your mate! You said you'd announce our bond the moment you became head Warrior." I said loudly.A murmur swept the crowd. Was it true?Caleb frowned and leaned in, speaki
