LOGINLara's POV
My vision blurred as tears welled up in my eyes, but I quickly wiped them off, picking up my phone again. The picture was still there, proving that I wasn't going insane.
In Gerald's arms was the one lady I recognized too well without needing to look too much. She was my sister. My younger sister who was my husband's first love.
The one he was supposed to marry.
So she was the reason he was rushing out of the house so fast this morning. He never stopped loving her after all. Even when she broke his heart five years ago by eloping with her lover, he never got over her.
I was supposed to be her replacement so I did everything I could to love him in ways that no one could ever love him. I gave him everything I had and for a moment, I thought maybe he would forget about her and choose me.
I had no idea she was back from Europe. But he just had to run straight to her without even caring about what I had to say. How absurd!
I couldn't read the article anymore, so I switched my phone off and lay on the bed, my eyes fixed on the ceiling above me.
Why was it so hard for anyone to choose me? What exactly was my crime?
I wasn't my parents’ favorite either. Everyone loved Ria. It was always about Ria. Never about me. I was the older one yet I had to live my life in her shadows.
The front door opened and I jolted out of bed, forgetting my slippers by the bed as I rushed out of the room. Gerald walked into the house, looking tired and my heart almost softened toward him. But he had been with the other woman after all, why should I be worried?
“You're back,” I muttered, and he looked up in surprise, not expecting to see me awake at this time of night.
“Why are you still up?” He asked, making his way to me and the smell of a female perfume hit me hard. “You shouldn't have waited up for me. And why did you walk around barefoot? The ground is cold.” He added and I blinked in surprise, stunned at how he noticed that when I didn't.
“How was the business issue you went for?” I asked, crossing my arms over my chest but he simply took my hand and pulled me to the room.
“Put them on.” He said, gesturing toward my footwear and I sighed before wearing them. “Business was good. Wasn't much of a big deal.” He said nonchalantly and I couldn't help but scoff in amusement.
“Is there something funny about what I said?” He asked and I shrugged.
“You tell me,” I muttered, staring at him. “Did you really leave the house for business matters or did you leave to see the love of your life?”
He stiffened as soon as I said those words and he turned to me, his brows raised in question.
“Were you following me? Stalking me? Do you realize how sick that is?” He asked, obviously disgusted but he didn't even try to deny my accusation.
“That's all you could think of, Gerald? Have you forgotten how famous you are?” I questioned, grabbing my phone and turning it on. “You're all over the news. A famous billionaire is reuniting with his first love. You don't think I deserve an explanation?”
“There's nothing to explain.” He replied coldly, taking off his shirt. “She was in trouble and all I did was help her. You shouldn't believe what the articles say, Lara.”
“That's why you left even when I had something important to say? Because she was in trouble? How did you know that I wasn't in trouble? I'm your wife. She left you years ago for someone else yet you left your wife for her?” I asked in disbelief and he scoffed, running his hand through his hair in frustration.
“Is this jealousy? If it is, bury it somewhere deep in your chest. I did what I had to do. Now let me sleep, I'm exhausted.” He muttered, getting under the covers and pulling them over his head.
Jealousy? Was he being serious right now?
“Gerald, I'm preg—”
“Please, let me sleep, Lara.” He grumbled and I let out a sigh of frustration.
Tomorrow. I will tell him tomorrow.
I lay on the bed, unable to sleep. All I did was toss and turn until I finally succumbed to the tiredness that weighed me down. When I woke up the next morning, Gerald was already out of bed and was dressing up to go to work.
So early in the morning.
“Don't you think it's too early to go to the office?” I asked, glancing at the time to see that it was just past six am.
I was still so drowsy and all I wanted to do was sleep. But his next words had the sleep flying out of my eyes immediately as I sat up.
“I'm not going to the office yet.” He said and I swallowed. “There's something important I have to do before leaving.”
“What is it?”
He sighed, staring at me for a moment like he didn't know whether to answer me or not.
“Don't overreact.” He started and my heart sank. “I'm bringing Ria here. She doesn't have anywhere to go right now and I'm the only person she can turn to. You're her sister, you should be able to take care of her.” He explained and it felt like I had just been slapped in the face with a shoe.
“I'm sorry, what?” I asked in disbelief. “Ria has an apartment of her own. She could go live in our parents’ house. But she chose to return to the house of the man who used to love her?”
“I told you not to overreact.” He muttered flatly and I scoffed, getting out of bed and making my way to him.
“I shouldn't overreact? You didn't even think of me before making such random decisions. How do you think I'll feel knowing that your ex— that you love so much by the way— is going to be living under the same roof with you?”
“She's your sister, Lara. Have some decency.”
My sister, who has done nothing but make my life miserable? My sister who almost poisoned me to death because she hated having competition?
“I don't want her here,” I said firmly, crossing my arms over my chest. “I'll find her a new apartment to stay at. She could stay at my old apartment too. But I won't let her live here with us.”
He paused for a moment, then turned to me with an expression that had me gulping.
“You keep forgetting your place, Lara, don't you?” He asked as he approached me while I backed up against the wall. “Have you forgotten that I only married you because you begged me to?”
“You married me because you already had a deal with my parents to marry one of their daughters. When Ria left, you had no choice but to choose me.” I retorted and he slammed his hand against the wall, trapping me.
“You, Lara, are my wife because I married you.” He whispered, tracing my bottom lip gently and I let out a shaky breath. “But never forget your place. You're just her replacement.”
I froze. My face went pale at once as he backed away and started to walk out of the room.
“Ria is moving in today. Clean up the room next to mine for her. One mistake and you won't like what I'll do.”
With that, he was gone.
RIA'S POV“Currently, there has been no statement concerning what happened, which leaves many people believing that the article about Mrs. Roberts might be true,” the business reporter said on the hospital television.I watched everything from my hospital bed, my heart thumping with joy.“This is what you get for not knowing your place, Lara.”I clenched my jaw tightly before changing the channel. I rested my head against the hospital pillow, breathing softly to ease the tension building inside my heart. My eyes fell on my bandaged wrist, and I slowly lifted it.I didn't know how the world would receive this because of Lara's good image, but it looked like her reputation wasn't as strong as I had thought. There were many others waiting for an opportunity to destroy her, and I had just given them that opportunity. My mind went back to when I entered my room and stood before the mirror. I stared at my reflection, remembering every moment I had spent fighting to keep Gerald.I couldn't l
LARA“What am I seeing?” I stared at my laptop for the hundredth time, but it didn't erase what was staring back at me.Me? A homewrecker? How?I shot to my feet and rushed out of my room, but at that same moment, the front door opened, and Bryan walked in, his suit jacket folded over his arm.“What's wrong? Where are you going in such a hurry?” he asked with a frown.I stopped in front of him, breathing heavily.“I saw this article online, a-and earlier today Ria came to the company screaming. I'm sure she's the one behind this. Do you know what this is going to cost me? I'm going to lose everything that I've worked for—”“Hey, hey. It's alright. Stop panicking. You and I both know it's false. I'll handle everything. Just stay here and answer the investors and any other calls,” he said.I sniffled, wiping my tears before nodding. He patted my shoulder before slipping a hand into his pocket to take out his phone.“Wait... you just got back from somewhere,” I realized. He smiled at me
GERALDI returned to the company with sweaty palms, knowing I was very late for the meeting."God, I should have sent her home in a taxi," I muttered to myself, drawing the attention of my colleagues. Ignoring their stares, I took out my phone, but there were still no messages from Lara. As soon as the elevator doors opened, I stepped out in a hurry and headed for the boardroom. She had told me how important this meeting was. Hell, I was the one who arranged everything and knew just how important it was.I reached the door and held the knob, but my hand froze as my heart began to thump loudly in my ears. I gripped the cold handle tightly, closed my eyes, and finally opened the door, a cold breeze brushing against my face."—That was a wonderful deal, Mrs. Roberts, and we are glad to have formed a partnership with you."I heard the hearty laughter of a man and glanced around the room. About four men sat around the table while Lara stood beside a hologram displaying the new business mod
GERALD“Fool? Me?” I gripped my cheek in disbelief. She gripped her hair tightly, anger burning in her eyes. Then she turned to me, her mouth opening to speak, but it closed right after.“Ria.” I stepped forward, but she moved back and turned, walking in the direction Lara had gone, and I knew she was up to no good. “Stop it. We can settle this at ho—”“Home? The same home you haven't bothered visiting for two whole days? Stop being a joke, Gerald, and fuck off. I'll put this slut in her place!” she snapped back, and I slammed my forehead in frustration. This was one of the main reasons why I never returned home—to avoid her constant trouble and quarrels. I was too tired of all this and needed a fucking break.“Stop!” I snapped, closing the distance in huge strides and grabbing her arm. She froze, turning sharply to face me at the same time the elevator doors closed, but I swore I saw the disgust in Lara's eyes, which made me want to sink somewhere and hide from the shame this woman w
RIA“I'm sorry, ma'am, but I can't interrupt the CEO's meeting. You need to either have an appointment with her or wait until she's done with the meeting,” she said firmly, my eyes twitching. “And if you refuse, I'll have no other choice than to call security to handle it from there.”I glared at her, eating the inside of my mouth, my fingers digging into the counter.“Me? Wait? A whole me wait for her?! Are you seriously listening to yourself? Do you fucking know who you're talking to? I can make you lose this stupid job of yours!”She flinched, her hands pressing together.I exhaled sharply in disbelief, gripping my hair. My eyes swept through the place, and I saw everyone was fucking looking at me.Why couldn't they mind their damn business?“Fix this,” I directed at her. “Take me to Lara's office right now, or else I'll make this place unbearable for everyone.”She bit her lip, anxiety written all over her face.“I'm sorry, ma'am, but that's above...”“Fine!” I screamed. “I'll go
RIA'S POVIt had been two days. Two fucking days, and Gerald hadn't come home!"He couldn't be with that bitch, right?" I bit my nail hard, my feet tapping against the floor repeatedly. My eyes drifted to the vanity mirror, and I saw how dark the circles beneath them had become and how messy the room was. I had been waiting for him ever since the next day to apologize for everything I had said.I had thought I was overthinking things and that Gerald would never return to her. He had always picked me instead of her. Even when she had been bleeding to death, he had chosen me!This time wouldn't be any different, or so I had thought. But to my dismay, he wasn't around. I texted him repeatedly and even called him, but he never answered. I had started thinking something terrible had happened to him..."No... no." I gripped my hair, my eyes darting around the room. "Staying in here won't give me the answer I'm looking for."I shot to my feet, quickly changed into a fresh set of clothes, and
LARA“I didn't do anything, Gerald!” I pleaded, tears burning in my eyes. His eyes burned with hatred as he carried Ria up, her hands hanging limply. “She tried to hurt herself, and I stopped her.”“Stop lying!” he thundered, and I flinched. “Ria has no reason to hurt herself. You're so selfish and
Lara's POV “Your lies weren't enough and now you're trying to blame poor Ria? She doesn't even know what we're talking about. Must you be so shameless?” Gerald asked in annoyance and I gasped, shaking my head in disagreement. There was no way the results would just disappear into thin air. Somethi
Lara's POV I never got the chance to tell Gerald that I was pregnant. Or that I was dying in six months. I didn't want to believe that he would actually bring Ria to the house, so I didn't clean the room as he told me to.The doctor specifically told me not to stress myself and I wouldn't do that
Lara's POV “Is it really incurable?” I asked, my heart in my throat as I squeezed the hem of my gown gently and the doctor nodded.“In my whole experience as a doctor, Mrs. Stone, lung cancer has never been cured successfully. It has spread too far to be treated. Other hospitals may have developed
