Victor Carter stepped inside the old house as Elena's grandfather quietly locked the front door behind him.

For several long seconds, neither man spoke.

The years had left their mark on both of them.

Victor's once jet-black hair was now streaked with gray, and the deep lines on his face told stories of burdens he had carried in silence.

Elena's grandfather gestured toward the living room.

"Sit."

Victor obeyed.

The room was exactly as he remembered it.

The old grandfather clock still stood in the corner.

The fireplace remained untouched.

Even the family portrait above the mantel hadn't moved.

His eyes lingered on it.

Elena's parents smiled back at him.

For a brief moment, he looked away.

"You've avoided this house for over twenty years," Elena's grandfather finally said.

"So tell me..."

"What could possibly be important enough to bring you back?"

Victor inhaled deeply.

"They've started searching again."

The old man's expression hardened instantly.

"Are you certain?"

Victor nodded.

"I wouldn't be here if I wasn't."

Silence filled the room.

Finally, Elena's grandfather spoke.

"I thought they had given up years ago."

"So did I."

"What changed?"

Victor reached inside his coat and removed a thin folder.

He placed it on the table.

"They know Elena is no longer hiding."

Her grandfather stared at the folder but didn't touch it.

"How?"

"They've been watching."

His breathing became heavier.

"Since when?"

Victor hesitated.

"Long enough."

The old man closed his eyes.

"I warned her this day might come."

Victor looked at him.

"You also knew you couldn't hide her forever."

"No."

"I couldn't."

A painful silence settled between them.

After a while, Victor spoke again.

"I've kept my promise."

"I watched her."

"I stayed close enough to intervene if necessary."

"But I never contacted her."

"Not until now."

Elena's grandfather looked up sharply.

"Why did you break your promise?"

"Because things have changed."

"She's beginning to remember."

The old man's fingers tightened around the armrest.

"So Margaret was right."

Victor nodded.

"The bracelet triggered something."

"They won't stay hidden much longer."

Her grandfather slowly stood and walked toward the window.

Outside, darkness had swallowed the garden.

"When she was a child," he said quietly, "I promised my son I would protect her."

Victor lowered his head.

"And I promised him I'd protect the family."

Neither man spoke for several moments.

Both were remembering the same day.

The day everything changed.

Victor finally broke the silence.

"I failed him once."

"I won't fail his daughter."

The following morning, Elena arrived at Blackwood Group feeling refreshed.

The events of the past few weeks had changed something inside her.

She no longer questioned whether she deserved to be there.

She belonged.

As she entered the charity department, several colleagues greeted her warmly.

"Morning, Elena!"

"Good morning."

One of the junior staff members hurried over.

"I wanted to thank you."

Elena looked surprised.

"For what?"

"The community supplier you recommended?"

"They've exceeded every expectation."

"The children received everything two days ahead of schedule."

Elena smiled.

"I'm happy it worked out."

Before she could say anything else, Damian walked into the department.

He had clearly come looking for her.

"Do you have a minute?"

"Of course."

They stepped into a small meeting room.

Elena immediately noticed something was different.

Damian looked distracted.

"Is everything alright?"

He hesitated.

There it was again.

Victor Carter.

The name echoed in his mind.

He had promised himself not to tell Elena until he understood more.

Yet keeping secrets from her already felt wrong.

"I've just had a lot on my mind."

She studied him carefully.

"You know..."

"You don't always have to carry everything alone."

Those simple words caught him off guard.

For so many years, he had done exactly that.

He smiled faintly.

"I'll remember that."

She smiled back.

Neither of them noticed how naturally the distance between them had disappeared.

Across the city, Adrian's investigator entered his office.

"I have another update."

Adrian looked up immediately.

"What did you find?"

"We confirmed Victor Carter worked for the Vale family."

Adrian's heart skipped a beat.

"The Vale family?"

"Yes."

"He wasn't just security."

"He was personally assigned to protect Mr. and Mrs. Vale."

Adrian slowly stood.

"So Victor has known Elena since she was a child."

"It appears so."

The investigator nodded.

"But that's not the strange part."

Adrian frowned.

"What is?"

The investigator placed another photograph on the desk.

"It appears Victor has recently met someone."

Adrian picked it up.

The photograph was blurry but clear enough to recognize one person.

Elena's grandfather.

Meanwhile, Vanessa sat alone in a café, absentmindedly stirring her untouched coffee.

She couldn't stop thinking about the name she had seen in Adrian's file.

Victor Carter.

She didn't know who he was.

But she knew one thing.

Ever since that name appeared...

Adrian had become even more distant.

She took out her phone and dialed a private investigator she had worked with once before.

"I need you to look into someone."

"Who?"

"Victor Carter."

"Find out who he is."

"And more importantly..."

"Find out why Adrian suddenly cares so much about him."

After ending the call, Vanessa stared out the café window.

"This has nothing to do with jealousy anymore," she whispered.

"I need to know what Elena is hiding."

That evening, Victor left Elena's grandfather's house.

He had barely reached his car when he sensed something.

Someone was there.

Watching.

He slowly turned toward the dark trees lining the road.

Nothing.

Only silence.

Then...

A twig snapped.

Victor's eyes narrowed.

For the first time in years...

Someone was watching the watcher.

And deep within the shadows, an unseen figure smiled before disappearing into the darkness.

  • Too Late To Want Me Back    048: What He Never Told Her

Damian's security team traced the call within thirty-six hours. A burner phone, purchased in cash, activated for eleven minutes and never used again. Untraceable, technically. But the store it came from sat two blocks from a building Damian recognized immediately — the old Sterling Holdings satellite office, the one Adrian had quietly shut down during the restructuring. "That doesn't mean Adrian's involved," Elena said, reading the report over Damian's shoulder. "I didn't say it did." He set the tablet down. "But someone who used to have access to that building did." "Marcus." Damian looked up. "You know that name?" "No." Elena frowned. "But Vanessa's been different this week. Distracted. My assistant mentioned she canceled two meetings and left the office early yesterday without telling anyone where she was going." "You're still keeping tabs on Vanessa." "I'm keeping tabs on the people who might hurt me. She qualifies." Elena crossed her arms. "She always has." Damia

  • Too Late To Want Me Back    047: Tomorrow

Vanessa didn't sleep. She lay in the dark replaying four words until they lost their shape. *I already do.*Adrian had said it so plainly. Like a fact. Like something he'd decided a long time ago and simply hadn't bothered to mention. She told herself it didn't matter. It mattered.By six she gave up on sleep entirely and sat at her kitchen table with her phone face-down in front of her, as though not looking at it might undo the message still sitting there.*Tomorrow, we talk.*Tomorrow was today. The address came at nine. No explanation. Just a pin dropped on a map, a small café on the edge of the financial district, far enough from Blackwood Group and Sterling Holdings that no one from either building would recognize her walking in.She almost didn't go.But not going meant waiting. Waiting meant wondering. And Vanessa had spent three months wondering who knew what she'd done — whether it was Adrian's driver, or the assistant she'd bribed, or someone at the clinic who'd talked when

  • Too Late To Want Me Back    046: The Choice

Elena stayed quiet for several minutes after the call ended. Damian was still holding her hand, his thumb moving gently across her knuckles, as though he could calm the fear gathering inside her.She hated that she was frightened — not because of the caller, but because she had finally started feeling safe. And now someone had reminded her that maybe she wasn't."Damian.""I'm here.""Who do you think it was?""I don't know. And I don't know if they were watching you either.""That's not very reassuring.""I know. But I'm not going to lie to you just to make you feel better."She looked back at him. "Thank you."He squeezed her hand. "We'll find out who it was."Elena nodded, and instead of letting the fear consume her, she took a deep breath. "I don't want this to control me. I don't want to start hiding in this house again. I've already spent too much of my life running."Damian's expression softened. "Then don't run.""I won't."For the first time since the call, she smiled. That e

  • Too Late To Want Me Back    045: What She Didn't Say

Elena woke the next morning feeling strangely peaceful. For the first time in weeks, she hadn't dreamed about her past. She hadn't woken up wondering what she had forgotten or what secret would surface next. She had simply slept — deep, dreamless, and whole. Somehow, that felt like a gift. She sat up and looked around her room. The wooden box was still on the table, her father's letter safely inside. She smiled faintly. She wasn't ready to forget the past, but she was beginning to understand that she didn't have to live inside it either. After getting dressed, Elena walked downstairs. Damian was already there, standing near the windows with a cup of coffee in his hand, sifting through a few documents. When he heard her footsteps, he looked up, and his eyes softened immediately."Good morning.""Good morning.""You slept."Elena smiled. "How did you know?""You don't look exhausted."She laughed. "Is that your way of saying I usually look terrible?""That's exactly what I'm saying."Sh

  • Too Late To Want Me Back    044: A Quiet Moment

Elena barely slept that night. She lay awake, staring at the ceiling while everything that had happened over the past few days replayed in her mind. Her grandfather. Her parents. The memories that were slowly returning. The letter her father had left behind. She turned onto her side and looked at the small wooden box sitting on the table beside her bed.She had opened it so many times over the years but tonight, it felt different. For the first time, she no longer saw it as a box filled with painful memories. It felt like a piece of home.Elena slowly sat up, and reached for the box and opened it.The silver bracelet caught the moonlight. Beside it was her father's letter. She picked it up carefully. She had already read it several times, but the words still made her chest ache. You are my daughter before you are an heiress. She smiled sadly. Her father had known her so well.Even before she grew up and chose to hide her wealth, he had understood that the Vale name should never decide

  • Too Late To Want Me Back    043: The Man in the Memory

"Someone was there that night."Elena's voice trembled through the phone.Damian's heart tightened. He had heard fear in her voice before, but this was different. This wasn't fear of Adrian. It wasn't fear of Vanessa. It wasn't even fear of the uncertainty surrounding her past. This was the fear of remembering something she had spent years forgetting."Elena," Damian said gently, "where are you?""At home.""Are you with your grandfather?""Yes.""Good. Stay with him."There was a brief silence. Then Elena whispered,"Damian...""I'm coming."He ended the call.Victor was still standing across from him."What happened?""She remembered something."Victor's face changed."What?""She remembers a man talking to her father."For several seconds, Victor didn't respond. His expression was enough to tell Damian that the memory mattered."You know who it was."Victor finally looked at him."I may."Damian's jaw tightened."Then tell me.""I need to speak to Elena first.""She's upset.""I kn
