Beatrice’s expression grew more serious.

Denny hesitated, realizing he couldn’t keep it from her, and smiled as he wrapped an arm around her, leading her to a quiet corner of the garden. “You’re as sharp as ever, my dear. Then I’ll be honest—if Charlie really does have feelings for Miss Hale, would you be okay with it?”

Beatrice fell silent.

She couldn’t lie and say she’d be fine with it.

If it were someone else’s child, she might have been able to say, “It doesn’t matter if they’ve been divorced.” But when it was her own son, she had to admit she didn’t have that kind of magnanimity.

She never interfered in her son’s romantic choices—so long as the girl had good character, came from a decent family, and he truly liked her, she didn’t demand a perfectly matched marriage.
