~ Aria's POV ~

Jeremiah's eyes scanned through the list of items I had written, and when he was done reading it, he gave me a suspicious look.

"Are you hunting supernatural beings now? Why would you need silver, crucifixes, salt, irons, amulets, and runes?" he asked, narrowing his eyes.

"Just tell me where I can find them… and lend me some money too. I promise I’ll start working here immediately to pay you back," I said, nodding earnestly.

"What are you up to, Aria? You're... acting weird. Velmora is filled with supernatural beings, and these items you just mentioned are like their weakening point. So what do you need them for?" he pressed on, trying to get a glimpse of what I was up to.

But I wasn’t ready to tell him the truth. I had written those items down because they were what the monsters in the Academy feared. And now that Jeremiah had said the same, I was fully convinced they’d work. If I didn’t have the power to fight back, then I’d use what they feared most.

  • Torn Between Monsters    Chapter 58

~ Aria's POV ~The morning sun filtered through the curtains and kissed my skin, coaxing a soft smile to my lips. My eyes fluttered open slowly, adjusting to the light. I sat up on the bed, stretching all over with a smiling face. For the first time since I arrived in this school, I had slept peacefully, without being scared. After what I did to them last night, they won't even think about coming close to me. If they tried to act stubborn, I was ready for them. I wouldn't hesitate to fight back.Still grinning like a child with her favorite candy, I hopped out of bed, dancing to the beat of no music—or should I say, dancing to the music creating itself in my head.Last night was the best night of my life because I had done what those monsters least expected from me.As I hummed the tune in my head, I opened my wardrobe to look for something to wear, only to be met with emptiness. Then it occurred to me that I had literally packed my clothes into my luggage when I made up my mind to le

  • Torn Between Monsters    Chapter 56

~ Aria's POV ~"Did you enjoy your meal?" Caspian asked as we stepped out of the restaurant. I had just finished a full plate of chicken rice, macaroni and cheese. I had eaten to my heart’s content because Caspian had told me to eat to my heart’s content.Since I wasn't enemies with food and just a broke girl whose mom had abandoned her, I didn't hesitate to order whatever I wanted.I beamed a small smile at Caspian. "Yes, I did. Thank you.""You're always welcome." He reached to pat my head, but I jerked his hand away. He looked at me and chuckled."You must hate it when guys come close to you, right?" he asked, and I nodded my head.Yeah... I do loathe it when guys try to touch me—guys except for, you know, my three handsome monsters. I hope they stop being mad and talk to me. They should at least be excited that I came back to the Academy."Do you want to go back to the Academy or do you want us to hang out a little?" he asked."I’d rather go back to the Academy," I said with a sof

  • Torn Between Monsters    Chapter 55

~ Aria's POV ~ I stood there, completely confused about why they acted like I didn't exist. Wasn’t this what they wanted? For me to stay? So why were they treating me like a ghost? Then the mean words I had said to them—especially to Thorne—hit me, like an iron fist to the chest.Of course, Raven and Thorne were angry. They had every right to be after the way I spoke to them. But why was Lucian in it too? The only wrong I did was not saying goodbye to him, and he was kind of mean. Among the three of them, he was the only one who didn't try to stop me from leaving.I glanced over at him. For a second, his eyes met mine—but then he looked away, pretending he hadn’t seen me. He turned back to his friends. Isolde was there too, perched beside them like a queen on her poisonous throne, and the look she shot me could have peeled my skin off.Raven and Thorne didn't even take a moment to spare me a glance. They were laser-focused on their food like they hadn’t eaten in days. Like I didn’t m

  • Torn Between Monsters    Chapter 54

~ Aria's POV ~I sat down on my bed, my eyes glued to my fingernails, recalling over and over again how claws had sprouted from them. My hand also went to my forehead, recalling how I had healed up in an instant from that deep wound that could send anyone straight to their grave. Why couldn’t I remember having such a massive gash on my forehead? And what happened to the one-eared man? The truck driver? Why did they vanish like the accident never happened? It was strange, and even more strange how I had come back to the academy without knowing. If not for Jeremiah, who had also witnessed the accident, I wouldn't have been so sure the accident happened.I tried to think hard, harder than I did the first time. But my memories about the accident were blank, wiped clean like a plain white sheet. My hand grazed my forehead again, and I suddenly stood from the bed I had been lying on for the past thirty minutes—ever since I told Miss Hellcat I wasn’t leaving anymore. My eyes scanned the room

  • Torn Between Monsters    Chapter 53

~ Aria's POV ~Halfway out of Velmora, Jeremiah pulled over to refill the gas tank. While he handled that, I leaned back against the car, my eyes fixed on nothing in particular—just staring into space.I wasn't just staring into space. My thoughts were lingered on Raven, Thorne and Lucian. I kept wondering what they were doing right now.Was Thorne still angry about my words? Was Raven mad at me for mentioning his deceased girlfriend's name? And Lucian... Was he sad about me leaving or he has he gone out to have sex?The questions circled like vultures, picking away at my sanity, and I let out a sigh."Is he your boyfriend?" Jeremiah's voice broke through the fog in my mind.I blinked, turning to him. "Huh?""The guy from earlier," he clarified. "Is he your boyfriend?""No, he's not my boyfriend. Why would you even think so?" I murmured. He shrugged. "Your face changed after seeing him. You've been out of it since your conversation with him. It’s like… you’re here, but you’re not. Is
