LOGINDiane's POV
The meeting room empties slowly, one board member after the other leaving with stiff backs and uneasy expressions. Murmurs follow them out, low and cautious whispers that cling to the walls even after the door shuts behind the last person. I remain seated, lips folded in. My fingers are still curled tightly around the edge of the table, my heart thudding painfully against my ribs. Proceed as planned. The words echo again. Not once, not twice; they keep echoing like music on play, and as they echo, my anxiousness increases. I can't understand why Conrad said we would proceed as planned. It isn't meant to bother me no matter what, given the fact that Conrad is a freak. But I'm a secretary after all. Whatever goes wrong, I think 80% of the blame will be on me. I slowly tilt my head to his side. He hasn't moved. He sits at the head of the table, jacket still on, sleeves crisp, gaze fixed on nothing in particular. Is he lost in thought? I don't know. But he's calm, too calm for a man whose company stands on the edge of scandal. I stand slowly, attempting to leave the hall, but... "Diane," he says eventually, his voice cutting through the silence. "Stay." I swallow hard, my throat bubbling in the process. Just as I stood slowly, I sit down slowly, staring at his face to see if I can figure out any expression. Blank. His expression has always been blank, with nothing to figure out. My thoughts linger on only one thing; is he going to vent on me? The door finally clicks shut, leaving just the two of us in the oversized room. The air feels heavier, thicker, like something unspoken is pressing down on my chest. "Sir..." I start, then hesitate. Carefully, I choose my words. "Proceeding as planned; won't that make things worse?" He finally looks at me. Not annoyed. Not angry. Just... assessing. "Sit properly," he says. I straighten immediately, smoothing my dress over my knees. "If we change the design," he continues calmly, standing up now, "we look guilty. If we move the date forward, we look desperate. And if we pull out entirely..." He scoffs lightly. "...we hand Reney exactly what they want." I frown slightly. What is he saying? "But they already exposed theirs first. Society will assume..." "Society assumes whatever it's fed," he cuts in smoothly, voice firm and commanding. "And I don't intend to feed them fear." He walks toward the glass wall, hands slipping into his pockets as he stares out at the city below. "Our design didn't appear overnight," he goes on. "It passed through approvals, revisions, and internal reviews." He turns slightly, his gaze locking onto mine. "You know most of that, you went through everything last night." My breath catches in my throat. "You've seen the drafts," he continues. "The timestamps. The mails. The revisions dated months before Reney made their move." Understanding dawns slowly; he's right. "They copied us," I whisper softly. "Yes." His lips curve into something sharp. "And they were arrogant enough to think we'd panic." My pulse quickens. "So proceeding as planned is..." "Proof," he finishes. "Confidence. Leverage." He pauses, his voice tinged with something I can't place my finger on. Reney has no idea what they've done. "If they accuse us after the launch, we respond with evidence. If they stay silent, their exposure becomes an unspoken admission." I stare at him, something shifting quietly in my chest. He isn't reckless. He really isn't. He's in fact five steps ahead. He's being strategic. "But sir," I say carefully, "what if things don't go as expected?" The question rolls out of my tongue because I can't stop being curious. I need answers. I want to make sure we're on track. His gaze darkens slightly as he studies me. "Then," he says calmly, "we fight it the proper way." he declares sharply. Silence settles between us again, different this time. Heavier and charged. My phone vibrates suddenly in my purse. I stiffen, fear crawling in. Conrad notices. His eyes flick briefly to the bag before returning to my face. "Is something wrong?" I shake my head too quickly. "No. Just... nothing important." But even as I say it, the words from the anonymous message replay in my mind again. This won't be the end, Diane. Conrad moves back toward the table, stopping a little too close. My breath hitches as he leans in. "Are you sure there's nothing?" His gaze pierces into mine as he inquires. A chill runs down my spine. I gulp twice. "No... No... Nothing." I stammer. Of course I'm lying. I know I am, but I can't mix my personal problem with work. This is my business to sort out. His brows squint, like he doesn't believe what I said, like he knows as much as I do. "Nothing?" he repeats, narrowing his gaze at me. I nod. He shrugs. "What's next on my schedule?" he queries. A short gasp spills from my throat as I step back sharply, bowing my head. "The schedule is clean for now, but there are piles of proposals waiting for your approval. We should start with that first." I rush my words. He nods, then stands straight once more. "Let's leave." "Yes, sir." As I gather my things and turn to leave, one thought burns at the forefront of my mind: This isn't just about stolen designs anymore. Something far bigger is unfolding... and somehow, I'm right at the center of it. *** The rest of the day drags on, and as soon as the clock ticks 6pm, I gather my stuff, ready to leave. Just as I'm walking out, I see Conrad leaning against the wall, hands folded. I halt. "Sir?" "Are you leaving?" I force a smile. "Do you need my help with anything?" I question back instead. He nods, then lifts his weight from the wall and stands straight. He takes a step forward. Subconsciously, I step back, my heart picking up the race. "Did you get my email?" he asks, still walking robotically towards me. My breath pauses as realization hits hard. The... the event. I open my mouth to speak, but I gulp down air instead. "I... I... I..." "Planning to leave?" he cocks his head with a frown. "No... No... I thought maybe, because of what happened at work today, the event had been cancelled and you needed time to collect your thoughts." I mutter with a smile. He smirks, then grabs my arms. My eyes widen as a sharp gasp spills from my throat. "You must have forgotten something important, Diane..." He lifts my chin sharply, his breath hot against my face.Diane's POVIs it only me, or is Conrad's scandal fading already? With the scandal handled by his PR team, none of the trouble falls on him, and it's been fading away as quickly as it spread. Conrad would love it. It's all he ever wanted. The scandal fading away means an end is coming to our contract sooner than I expected. I haven't gotten attached to him, only to all the things he has to offer me in return for accepting to do this with him."Are you even with me?" Conrad's voice echoes."Yes. Yes, I'm with you." I reply, batting my eyelashes. I didn't mean to be carried away with my thoughts.I'm worried for myself. The contract ending means I'll go back to being a stripper in one of the most patronized clubs in the city. That isn't me saying I'm not used to that life anymore.Conrad pays me so well, and I've gotten comfortable with being paid so well. To get the amount he pays me, I'd have to work in the club all nigh
Conrad's POVClubbing has become one of my least favorite things to do. It could be because I've been occupied with work lately; it can't be because I'm worried there might be a repeat of the last time. Here I am in front of a club, one of the private clubs in the city. I drove myself down here because it feels like I'm losing my spark, and the best way to reignite it seems to be clubbing.Everyone knows me to be the bubbly type and a nightlife lover, and I don't want that to change. I have a cap on my head, and since it's late in the night, no one should be able to recognize me."Time to unwind." I coo, and proceed to step inside.I left all my problems to Ward to handle, and it was the right decision. He has a team dedicated to solving all my problems, and it has been like that for the longest time. Whoever is stalking Diane will be caught soon. She got herself a new number, and it was my idea. I gave her strict instructions not to give anyone besides me her new contact, not her col
Diane's POVI step into the office breathing heavily. I'm two minutes late to work. I did all I could to avoid it, and that included running from the compound straight to the second floor in heels.Conrad won't go easy on me for being late. He doesn't care to know that I went to bed late, all because I was scared someone might break down my door and come for me after he left.I drop my laptop on my table and try to catch my breath. I don't look in a mirror, but I know my hair is a mess already. I ran without putting it into consideration."Mr. Conrad would like to see you." A colleague walks up to me and says. It's bad that I don't know her name, and it's like that with the rest of them too. Months in this office and I'm still a stranger.I smooth down my skirt, pat my hair twice, and give up on both. Then I pick up my phone from my bag. I already know the words Conrad will speak to me when I show up in front of him, which could be why I'm not fidgety. They won't be nice, I know. I tr
Diane's POV"Somehow, the footage we need to find out about the culprit is missing.""How is that possible?" I'm quick to ask."Whoever the culprit is, he's good at things like this."The CCTV footage would have helped us get to the bottom of the matter. I relied on it. The culprit decided to stay one step ahead of us, and that was wise of them."I have a feeling whoever is behind this is someone who knows you and me." I tell him."You might be right and you might be wrong."I heave a deep sigh that isn't of relief. Until we find out the identity of the culprit, my life is at risk. I can't say the same for Conrad because he has bodyguards looking after him.Ever since he dropped me off at work, I've been thinking about who could be behind this, but I haven't been able to figure it out. Perhaps Conrad is right, and this has to do with him and not me."Don't worry about anything. I have things under control." He interrupts the silence. He definitely says that so I can feel better."I ha
Diane's POVWhoever wants to make my life a living hell more than it already is, I have no idea. I can't stop thinking about who could be behind the anonymous messages, but I have no clue yet.I roll from one end of the bed to the other. I find it hard to fall asleep, and it could be because I know someone has been monitoring me closely, and the person sure doesn't have good plans for me."I have to make sure I lock the door." I mutter and get off the bed. Some minutes ago, I checked the door and found it properly locked, and I'm on my way to check it again. It's safe to say I'm scared of what might be coming. This might be a good time to have my friend come stay with me for a few days. Her company might make me feel safe. I get to the door and check again. It's properly locked. To get to work on time tomorrow, I must sleep early, but what do I do when sleep isn't forthcoming? Drinking to a stupor is definitely not an option. I don't want a hangover tomorrow.I look all around while r
Conrad's POV"You came at the right time." I say to Ward as he walks closely behind me."I do all the time. I have a feeling I'm about to save your ass again like I always do." He responds.I sit on the sofa in the living room. I had a long day at work and I know I ought to go straight to my room for a shower, but there's something important I want to share with Ward.He sits next to me, his eyes fixed on the television screen. My team and his are playing today, which must be the main reason he came, but I'm not in the mood for banter tonight."You kept me waiting at your door. I thought you'd close from work by 5pm. Did you go somewhere after work today?""Yes." I coo."I told you to give me one of your spare keys, but you refused. If you had, I wouldn't have had to wait at the door for hours." He mutters. He's my best friend, but I'm not willing to give him unrestricted access to my space for no personal reason. I take off my suit and take a deep breath. It feels like the right thin
