Diane's POV

This won't be the end, Diane.

I can't count how many times these words have resounded in my mind since last night.

This is the message I received from the unknown sender last night, and no matter how hard I struggle to wrap my head around where and who the message came from, I can't.

All my years of living, I've never had any fight or bad encounter with someone, so I can't tell exactly where the message is coming from and what it means.

This is a mystery I can't solve, and the harder I try to comprehend it all, the further I'm lost for answers.

Headache. I might be down with a headache at the rate I'm thinking.

I sigh. Whoever sent the message must have made a silly mistake and sent it to the wrong person; me, because trust me, I'm convinced within myself that the message doesn't belong to me. I smooth down my dress before turning around on my heels.

However, just as I'm about to leave the house, my phone beeps in my purse. Pulling it out, I see a message notification pop up.

It's from Conrad.

Going through the email, I find out it's the details of the event he said he'd send me this morning, but something more catches my attention.

Haven's Lounge; 7pm, tonight.

My brows squint as I stare at the location and time of the event over and over again.

The event is tonight. That too at a hotel.

He never mentioned the event being this close. He only told me there was an event coming up, but never...

I harden my jaw, glance briefly at the time, then nod. I still have time, so instead of going to the office, I'll drop by the station to visit my brother and let him know I'm still with him.

With that thought, I bolt out of the room, wave down a cab and leave for the station.

As the cab drives past trees and tall buildings, I recline against the headrest, shutting my eyes briefly as I recall everything that has happened to me.

I had lived a perfect life... Or maybe I thought I did? After losing my parents some years back, I thought I had bounced back when I got a job at Conrad's company, but that excitement was robbed in an eye blink. I went back to nothing. I became a stripper just to survive, and my brother? He was struggling too. We had no one to lean on and vent our anger and frustration to.

When I thought I was close to survival, Conrad walked his ass right back into my life. I became his secretary, forced to smile at his face and dance to his tunes, and my brother? Yet again, locked behind bars for what he has no idea of.

Things are getting messy for me and my brother, and the fact that Conrad is the only person I can rely on feels more awful than it already is.

"Miss, your phone has been ringing for quite a time now." The cab driver's voice jolts me out of my thoughts.

I glance at him, force a smile, then pull my phone out of my purse.

Speaking of the devil, he's the one calling.

I hesitate before picking up the call, and the moment I do, a single sentence, a single order, echoes off the speaker.

"To the office, now."

Before I can even say a word, the call beeps right in my ear and that's it, he hangs up.

A scoff seeps from my throat as I stare at the phone.

To the office now? Seriously? I lean in to the driver. "Please sir, can you take a turn? I need to be at the office now." I tell him softly.

He smiles at me through the rearview mirror, then turns the cab slowly before driving off toward the company.

***

My eyes widen as I stare around the meeting room, wondering why everywhere is already filled up.

The stakeholders, board members and Conrad himself are already seated, and I can feel my skin freeze as Conrad keeps glaring at me.

Earlier when he sent me a message regarding the event, he didn't sound urgent or give a tip that something happened in the company, so seeing everyone gathered in the meeting room and some trembling leaves me wondering what exactly happened.

I manage to rush forward, then pull a seat and sit beside Conrad.

"Sir..." I open my mouth to speak, but a single stare from Conrad has me swallowing whatever word I wanted to say.

I grab the hem of my dress tight, palms turning sweaty.

"Reney's company already exposed the design of their latest product, and it turns out they plagiarized our design. Exposing ours next makes us the culprit. Society would think..." Conrad's hands wave in the air, cutting one of the board members off.

I gulp, now understanding why he requested that I come to the office immediately.

Reney's company. I know it's a rival company to ours, but what I didn't know was that they had already stepped up to the extent of copying our products and even going as far as copying the designs.

Silence wraps around the room as everyone waits for Conrad's words.

He tilts his head slowly. "When were we supposed to expose the design of the new product?" Conrad's voice finally bounces off the walls of the room.

"15th July, sir." I sharply reply. I remember going through everything yesterday, and I have enough information at the back of my palms.

"Any suggestions on what to do next?" Conrad's gaze sweeps across the faces of everyone as he asks.

"We could change the date of the exposition? Maybe something closer?" A member suggests.

"And the designs?" Conrad retorts.

The member bites the corner of his lips without saying another word.

"I think changing the design is best."

"And today is 30th June, I don't think we'll make it." I quickly interject.

All the members turn to me at once. "Changing the designs of the product will take at least one month. We can't achieve that within 14 days, and shifting the date of exposure is off the table already. It'll raise suspicion and..."

"She's right." Conrad intervenes, saving me from the explanations and everything.

I heave briefly, then shut my eyes. This is...

"We will proceed as planned." Conrad mutters, his voice sharp and firm, earning gasps from everyone.

"Wh... What?"

Diane's POVIs it only me, or is Conrad's scandal fading already? With the scandal handled by his PR team, none of the trouble falls on him, and it's been fading away as quickly as it spread. Conrad would love it. It's all he ever wanted. The scandal fading away means an end is coming to our contract sooner than I expected. I haven't gotten attached to him, only to all the things he has to offer me in return for accepting to do this with him."Are you even with me?" Conrad's voice echoes."Yes. Yes, I'm with you." I reply, batting my eyelashes. I didn't mean to be carried away with my thoughts.I'm worried for myself. The contract ending means I'll go back to being a stripper in one of the most patronized clubs in the city. That isn't me saying I'm not used to that life anymore.Conrad pays me so well, and I've gotten comfortable with being paid so well. To get the amount he pays me, I'd have to work in the club all nigh

  • Trapped With My Ex Boss; An Enemy that Ruined Me.    Chapter 30

Conrad's POVClubbing has become one of my least favorite things to do. It could be because I've been occupied with work lately; it can't be because I'm worried there might be a repeat of the last time. Here I am in front of a club, one of the private clubs in the city. I drove myself down here because it feels like I'm losing my spark, and the best way to reignite it seems to be clubbing.Everyone knows me to be the bubbly type and a nightlife lover, and I don't want that to change. I have a cap on my head, and since it's late in the night, no one should be able to recognize me."Time to unwind." I coo, and proceed to step inside.I left all my problems to Ward to handle, and it was the right decision. He has a team dedicated to solving all my problems, and it has been like that for the longest time. Whoever is stalking Diane will be caught soon. She got herself a new number, and it was my idea. I gave her strict instructions not to give anyone besides me her new contact, not her col

  • Trapped With My Ex Boss; An Enemy that Ruined Me.    Chapter 29

Diane's POVI step into the office breathing heavily. I'm two minutes late to work. I did all I could to avoid it, and that included running from the compound straight to the second floor in heels.Conrad won't go easy on me for being late. He doesn't care to know that I went to bed late, all because I was scared someone might break down my door and come for me after he left.I drop my laptop on my table and try to catch my breath. I don't look in a mirror, but I know my hair is a mess already. I ran without putting it into consideration."Mr. Conrad would like to see you." A colleague walks up to me and says. It's bad that I don't know her name, and it's like that with the rest of them too. Months in this office and I'm still a stranger.I smooth down my skirt, pat my hair twice, and give up on both. Then I pick up my phone from my bag. I already know the words Conrad will speak to me when I show up in front of him, which could be why I'm not fidgety. They won't be nice, I know. I tr

Diane's POV"Somehow, the footage we need to find out about the culprit is missing.""How is that possible?" I'm quick to ask."Whoever the culprit is, he's good at things like this."The CCTV footage would have helped us get to the bottom of the matter. I relied on it. The culprit decided to stay one step ahead of us, and that was wise of them."I have a feeling whoever is behind this is someone who knows you and me." I tell him."You might be right and you might be wrong."I heave a deep sigh that isn't of relief. Until we find out the identity of the culprit, my life is at risk. I can't say the same for Conrad because he has bodyguards looking after him.Ever since he dropped me off at work, I've been thinking about who could be behind this, but I haven't been able to figure it out. Perhaps Conrad is right, and this has to do with him and not me."Don't worry about anything. I have things under control." He interrupts the silence. He definitely says that so I can feel better."I ha

I can't stop thinking about who could be behind the anonymous messages, but I have no clue yet.I roll from one end of the bed to the other. I find it hard to fall asleep, and it could be because I know someone has been monitoring me closely, and the person sure doesn't have good plans for me."I have to make sure I lock the door." I mutter and get off the bed. Some minutes ago, I checked the door and found it properly locked, and I'm on my way to check it again. It's safe to say I'm scared of what might be coming. This might be a good time to have my friend come stay with me for a few days. Her company might make me feel safe. I get to the door and check again. It's properly locked. To get to work on time tomorrow, I must sleep early, but what do I do when sleep isn't forthcoming? Conrad's POV"You came at the right time." I say to Ward as he walks closely behind me."I do all the time. I have a feeling I'm about to save your ass again like I always do." He responds.I sit on the sofa in the living room. I had a long day at work and I know I ought to go straight to my room for a shower, but there's something important I want to share with Ward.He sits next to me, his eyes fixed on the television screen. My team and his are playing today, which must be the main reason he came, but I'm not in the mood for banter tonight."You kept me waiting at your door. I thought you'd close from work by 5pm. Did you go somewhere after work today?""Yes." I coo."I told you to give me one of your spare keys, but you refused. If you had, I wouldn't have had to wait at the door for hours." He mutters. He's my best friend, but I'm not willing to give him unrestricted access to my space for no personal reason. I take off my suit and take a deep breath. It feels like the right thin
