Diane's POV

Sometimes, fate and life have a way of throwing you back to something you thought could remain in the past.

Life is cruel most times, believe me.

Years ago, I hated him... Conrad... and of course I still do. All I ever wanted was to wake up one morning with a bowl of cookies between my knees, chugging down a glass of champagne while I laughed at his downfall.

Yes, the downfall of that son of a b*tch.

Pathetic.

But what I didn't have in mind was this... First, spending a night in his arms, giving in shamelessly, and second, standing in front of a mirror, dressed up and ready to resume work as his secretary.

No, screw that.

I'm ready to resume work as his personal plaything. The woman who'll warm his bed for three months. That's a whole lot, but when life bites you harder, you don't have a choice.

I'm taking this job not because I want to. What do I want? To spit in his face and call him all sorts of names, curse him till he can't stand it. But the circumstances surrounding me? I can't say no, even when I want to.

My brother... He needs me more than anything. Shit happened, and he got tangled in a mess.

You could say it was a trap, because I know my brother. He has no hook-up with drug dealers or whatever it is. But there he is, locked up and needing bail, and I'm the only one he has.

Even if I decline Conrad's offer, that means I'd have to work ten different jobs a day for five months before I can raise the funds for his bail, and I might even die while at it.

I bite my bottom lip hard, too hard, until it almost bleeds, then I sigh. I must have drifted so far that I forgot I have a job to attend to.

I grab my purse from the table where I tossed it earlier, then bolt out of the room.

••••

Stopping in front of the skyscraper, my hand grips my purse tighter as nostalgia slams hard.

This is it, Diane.

I'm back at the same place that made me lose my dignity and everything. The same place I was accused and tossed away like a piece of crap without the benefit of telling my own side of it.

I smile. Short. A painful smile. Then I proceed in.

The smoky scent, blended with olive, hits my nose, and I sniffle.

Nothing has changed, just as it has always been.

That smoky, olive scent. Conrad loves it more than anything.

I don't have all the time in the world, so instead of staring around and checking which is which, I head straight to Conrad's office.

I already know the way, so it's pretty easy to locate.

I knock at the door, and a sharp voice blurts from inside. "Come in." More like he knows I'm the one knocking.

I roll my eyes, then push the door open and walk in.

Conrad is seated behind his desk, glancing at the piles of files on it. The strong scent of his cologne slams into my nostrils, and the urge to sniff in and fill my lungs crawls in, but I press it down, holding my shoulders high as if I've still got my dignity.

His gaze sweeps up to mine, and my lips part.

Fuck. It's bitter to admit, but... Mr Conrad is a catch. Sad that he's a jerk.

His chin pulls up, then his lips curve into a smirk. A mean, wicked smirk.

He glances at the time, then back to me.

"You're late," he spits.

My eyes shoot wide in surprise. "What?!"

He drops the pen, interlocks his fingers, and places them on the desk, his jaw resting on them.

"Yes, you heard me, Miss Hall." He says the words slower this time, as if he's letting each one sink in.

I scoff, my gaze shooting up to the wall clock.

It's just 7:30am.

Wait, did he wake up on the wrong side of the bed, or does he deliberately want to stress my life even on the first day of resumption?

"I'm not late, I came..."

"You don't get to talk until you get a signal from me." He cuts me off, his voice tinged with authority.

I gasp in shock. There's no way this is happening. Am I being treated like a puppet?

I hiss, my anger slowly rising. "You might have forgotten that I came here for a purpose, not to bicker with you about how early I am to work. The bottom line is I get things done for you and we're good." I fake a smile, but he sits there unfazed, his gaze piercing deep into my soul.

I shift back uncomfortably, still cursing him under my breath.

He reclines against his chair. "A 10% discount to tell you who the boss is."

The words sound so distant, even though he says them just inches away from me. My jaw locks, and my fists clench tight.

"You don't have any right to." I slam the words out. My voice isn't loud, but he knows pretty well that he's struck a nerve.

He gives an arrogant smirk. "Oh, I do."

"That wasn't part of the deal." My voice slowly rises, laced with obvious rage.

He doesn't say a word.

"I wasn't supposed to be your secretary!! Right, everyone thinks I'm your secretary, but you and I know that is bullshit." My chest heaves as the words roll hotly off my tongue.

His face lights up with excitement. "Not my secretary?" He lifts a brow, a smile painting the corner of his lips.

My head spins as the urge to pounce on him consumes me.

God... that freak, that bast...

He's taunting me.

"Then tell me, who are you?" he muses.

A pause.

My knuckles turn whiter as my fists clench even tighter, my hateful glare clashing with his arrogant smile.

"My personal, little plaything?"

My bones crack, and my brain goes completely blank. My entire face turns red with rage, and I let adrenaline take over.

I rush forward, almost pounce on him, almost, but his next words crash through my entire being.

"Come here and sit on my lap, Miss Hall. I won't ask twice."

Diane's POVIs it only me, or is Conrad's scandal fading already? With the scandal handled by his PR team, none of the trouble falls on him, and it's been fading away as quickly as it spread. Conrad would love it. It's all he ever wanted. The scandal fading away means an end is coming to our contract sooner than I expected. I haven't gotten attached to him, only to all the things he has to offer me in return for accepting to do this with him."Are you even with me?" Conrad's voice echoes."Yes. Yes, I'm with you." I reply, batting my eyelashes. I didn't mean to be carried away with my thoughts.I'm worried for myself. The contract ending means I'll go back to being a stripper in one of the most patronized clubs in the city. That isn't me saying I'm not used to that life anymore.Conrad pays me so well, and I've gotten comfortable with being paid so well. To get the amount he pays me, I'd have to work in the club all nigh

  • Trapped With My Ex Boss; An Enemy that Ruined Me.    Chapter 30

Conrad's POVClubbing has become one of my least favorite things to do. It could be because I've been occupied with work lately; it can't be because I'm worried there might be a repeat of the last time. Here I am in front of a club, one of the private clubs in the city. I drove myself down here because it feels like I'm losing my spark, and the best way to reignite it seems to be clubbing.Everyone knows me to be the bubbly type and a nightlife lover, and I don't want that to change. I have a cap on my head, and since it's late in the night, no one should be able to recognize me."Time to unwind." I coo, and proceed to step inside.I left all my problems to Ward to handle, and it was the right decision. He has a team dedicated to solving all my problems, and it has been like that for the longest time. Whoever is stalking Diane will be caught soon. She got herself a new number, and it was my idea. I gave her strict instructions not to give anyone besides me her new contact, not her col

  • Trapped With My Ex Boss; An Enemy that Ruined Me.    Chapter 29

Diane's POVI step into the office breathing heavily. I'm two minutes late to work. I did all I could to avoid it, and that included running from the compound straight to the second floor in heels.Conrad won't go easy on me for being late. He doesn't care to know that I went to bed late, all because I was scared someone might break down my door and come for me after he left.I drop my laptop on my table and try to catch my breath. I don't look in a mirror, but I know my hair is a mess already. I ran without putting it into consideration."Mr. Conrad would like to see you." A colleague walks up to me and says. It's bad that I don't know her name, and it's like that with the rest of them too. Months in this office and I'm still a stranger.I smooth down my skirt, pat my hair twice, and give up on both. Then I pick up my phone from my bag. I already know the words Conrad will speak to me when I show up in front of him, which could be why I'm not fidgety. They won't be nice, I know. I tr

  • Trapped With My Ex Boss; An Enemy that Ruined Me.    Chapter 28

Diane's POV"Somehow, the footage we need to find out about the culprit is missing.""How is that possible?" I'm quick to ask."Whoever the culprit is, he's good at things like this."The CCTV footage would have helped us get to the bottom of the matter. I relied on it. The culprit decided to stay one step ahead of us, and that was wise of them."I have a feeling whoever is behind this is someone who knows you and me." I tell him."You might be right and you might be wrong."I heave a deep sigh that isn't of relief. Until we find out the identity of the culprit, my life is at risk. I can't say the same for Conrad because he has bodyguards looking after him.Ever since he dropped me off at work, I've been thinking about who could be behind this, but I haven't been able to figure it out. Perhaps Conrad is right, and this has to do with him and not me."Don't worry about anything. I have things under control." He interrupts the silence. He definitely says that so I can feel better."I ha

I can't stop thinking about who could be behind the anonymous messages, but I have no clue yet.I roll from one end of the bed to the other. I find it hard to fall asleep, and it could be because I know someone has been monitoring me closely, and the person sure doesn't have good plans for me."I have to make sure I lock the door." I mutter and get off the bed. Some minutes ago, I checked the door and found it properly locked, and I'm on my way to check it again. It's safe to say I'm scared of what might be coming. This might be a good time to have my friend come stay with me for a few days. Her company might make me feel safe. Conrad's POV"You came at the right time." I say to Ward as he walks closely behind me."I do all the time. I have a feeling I'm about to save your ass again like I always do." He responds.I sit on the sofa in the living room. I had a long day at work and I know I ought to go straight to my room for a shower, but there's something important I want to share with Ward.He sits next to me, his eyes fixed on the television screen. My team and his are playing today, which must be the main reason he came, but I'm not in the mood for banter tonight."You kept me waiting at your door. I thought you'd close from work by 5pm. Did you go somewhere after work today?""Yes." I coo."I told you to give me one of your spare keys, but you refused. If you had, I wouldn't have had to wait at the door for hours." He mutters. He's my best friend, but I'm not willing to give him unrestricted access to my space for no personal reason. I take off my suit and take a deep breath. It feels like the right thin
