Without another word, I made my way up the stairs and into my office, locking the door behind me as soon as I entered, ensuring that Lena didn’t do another runner. Walking over to the lounge chair, I dropped Lena onto it, then stood and waited until I had myself under control. As I stood before her, I watched as Lena shrank back into the lounge chair, pushing herself as far back as she could go. A moment later she brought her knees up and rested her folded arms on them. I felt my chest tighten, as I saw that she was visibly shaking and on the verge of tears. As I watched her, I found myself wondering what had happened to her to make her so afraid. She had been afraid of me from day one. The moment she had realised we were mates; she had been terrified enough to run for her life. The knowledge that she was afraid of me, and that she didn’t trust me, didn’t sit well with me. By now the mate bond should have grown enough for her to trust me. I knew it was hypocritic
