Chapter 1

As soon as I sent the message, I got a call from my mother, Carmen Dunham. She excitedly told me she was already waiting outside the campus gates.

If I hadn't seen that post first, I probably would have been moved to tears.

I hummed in acknowledgement, then shut down my computer and headed downstairs.

My younger brother, Steve Kaufman, stood obediently beside them and greeted me.

I nodded. Whenever he ran into me on campus, he always pretended not to know me.

Mom elbowed me disapprovingly.

"Steve's greeting you. Why are you still so quiet? Honestly, I don't know how you even got into grad school."

I pressed my lips together and said nothing.

She had forgotten that I'd ranked first on the written exam and passed the first round of interviews on my first try. But when Steve suddenly fainted, and there was no one else at home, I had no choice but to give up my chance and take him to the hospital.

It was only in my second attempt that Steve and I both made it through.

I'd ranked first in both the written exam and the second-round interview, yet they didn't even care or want to know.

My older sister, Rebecca Kaufman, nudged her chin toward Steve.

"You should learn from Steve. Stop acting like you're mute. No wonder no one likes you. Steve's already landed an offer from one of the top global companies. What about you?"

Everyone turned their scrutinizing gazes on me.

I looked up, ready to speak. However, Steve beat me to it first.

"Thomas' advisor, Leroy Turner, is known for being really strict. Honestly, it's a miracle Thomas is even graduating. Anyway, I still need to buy some clothes for work. Why don't we go shopping after lunch?"

Mom shot me a stern look. "You'd better not end up struggling to graduate. That would be so embarrassing for us."

I almost laughed.

It was true that Mr. Turner was strict, but the resources at his disposal were even more impressive.

My family had never asked about my situation or my plans for the future. They had no idea what I was truly capable of. Instead, they simply took it for granted that I was inferior to Steve.

"Go ahead and work on your thesis. Steve will show us around."

Mom made it sound like she was being considerate, but I'd grown all too familiar with these tricks. When I was a kid, she had always "bothered" Steve like this.

"Grandma's house gets so hot. You wouldn't be comfortable there, so just let Steve come with us."

"The mall is too far away. Just stay home and wait for us to bring back some snacks."

"The amusement park is so crowded. What if some kidnapper snatches you away?"

Mom always had a ready excuse, making it seem perfectly natural for Steve to enjoy all the preferential treatment.

In the end, Steve was the one who won our grandmother's affection, got to eat all the snacks, and played at the amusement park until he was exhausted.

Meanwhile, I was the one who earned a reputation for being quiet, unsociable, and reluctant to go out.

Bitterness rose in my throat, but I simply nodded.

Back in my dorm, I reread my acknowledgments several times. Over and over, I typed out the names of my family and my girlfriend, Audrey Fulton.

The fact that my family had come all this way meant they would probably be attending my graduation ceremony too. If I left them out of my acknowledgments, they'd probably be hurt.

My phone vibrated. It was a message from Steve.

"Thomas, come quick. Audrey's treating Mom and Dad to a welcome dinner."

He sent a photo of the dining table.

Why was Steve the one telling me about a dinner Audrey was hosting for Mom and Dad?

Before I could think it over any further, Audrey's impatient voice came through.

"I thought you were still working on your thesis, so I didn't want to disturb you. But Mr. and Mrs. Kaufman insisted that you come."

My heart warmed a little. So, they hadn't completely forgotten about me after all.

But by the time I arrived, there was barely any food left on the table. Not only had they not waited for me, but Mom even looked at me with disdain.

"You're always so slow. Don't blame us if you miss out on the food."

I clenched my fists.

Audrey stepped in to smooth things over. "Mrs. Kaufman, please don't say that." Then, she tugged at my sleeve. "Thomas, why don't you take care of the bill first? I'm sure you wouldn't want to upset your parents."

My fingers trembled slightly. In the end, I caved and paid the bill.

I couldn't remember how I got home that day. But from then on, my family never tried calling me from other people's phones again. At last, peace and quiet returned to my life.Every day, I ran my experiments and then went over to Mr. Turner's house for dinner."I'm telling you, even if you're busy with experiments, you still have to eat. Faith can't even get you to listen to her anymore."I felt a little embarrassed by Mr. Turner's nagging. I could only keep my head down and shovel food into my mouth.Faith jumped in to explain. "Dad, we were only late today because I was working on a set of data."Mr. Turner snorted in exasperation. "Neither of you is any better than the other. Once this project is finished, you two had better get your paperwork ready, because you'll both be going back to the college for internships.""Huh?" I said in surprise.Mr. Turner tapped me lightly on the head. "You should keep a position in college. That way, you'll have another option open to you in

Somehow, Audrey had found out where I was staying. She waited for me on my way home after I finished my experiments in the lab.She was wearing a trench coat, her figure looking noticeably thinner. The moment she saw me, her dull eyes lit up.I moved to the side and looked at her as though she were a complete stranger. Her heart sank. She grabbed my hand tightly and said, "Thomas, you've lost weight."I looked up at her. "Not as much as you have."She really had lost a lot of weight. Moreover, dark circles shadowed her eyes, as if she hadn't had slept well in ages.Audrey let out a bitter laugh. "I've been looking for you everywhere. I've already kicked Steve out."I gave a noncommittal hum, as though she were telling me something that had nothing to do with me."So?"Her chest heaved as tears welled up in her eyes."Can you please forgive me? We've been through so much together, and we even made it through the stress of retaking the exams. I thought we'd be together forever.

Audrey stared at the silver ring for half a second before frantically calling me.I answered, only to hear her voice on the verge of breaking."Thomas, where are you? Aren't you coming back to our apartment anymore?"Faith glanced at my phone, then tactfully stepped away.I cleared my throat and said seriously, "No, I'm not. We broke up, and I've already taken all my things."There was a brief silence on the other end. When Audrey spoke again, her voice trembled."But I never agreed to break up."I let out a scornful laugh and replied in the same tone she'd used with me before, "Stop being so unreasonable. I don't need your permission to break up."Mom's voice cut in, and the air of superiority she'd had earlier was gone."Thomas, are you upset because we didn't sit in your section? We didn't do it on purpose. Don't be angry with us. Where are you? Audrey is heartbroken right now. Can you really bear to put her through this?"Dad chimed in, "That's right. We're worried about

"If I were in Thomas' shoes, I wouldn't want to admit that my parents had chosen to celebrate my younger brother's graduation instead of attending mine either.""Poor Thomas. But why have I never heard Steve mention that he has an older brother?""You didn't know? I asked Steve about Thomas once, and he said he didn't even know him.""Are they really on such bad terms?""With parents who play favorites like that, how could Thomas and Steve possibly get along?"Hearing the accusations, Mom snapped angrily, "What do you people know? Thomas is the one who doesn't know how to appreciate what he has!"Audrey looked at me with disappointment. "Thomas, did you really have to take things this far? You know this is going to hurt Steve!"I steadied myself. She cared only about Steve, not sparing a single thought for how much I was hurting too.Seeing what was happening, Mr. Turner spoke up disapprovingly. "This is a graduation ceremony, not a place for you to shout and argue. Security, p

Mom jolted upright in her seat."Thomas? The valedictorian? How is that possible?""Maybe it's just someone with the same name, Mom. Don't make such a fuss," Rebecca said.Dad chimed in, "Exactly! Thomas could never—"Before he could finish, I stepped onto the stage amid thunderous applause.Their eyes widened as they watched me walk out in my graduation gown. I stood tall behind the microphone and cleared my throat."Hello, everyone. I'm Thomas Kaufman, a 2026 graduate in Biotechnology and Engineering."Mom's face flushed red, then drained of color. For once, she was at a complete loss for words.Audrey's mouth fell open as she stared at me wide-eyed.Dad and Rebecca exchanged a look, then swallowed nervously."How is this possible?""Is Thomas really that outstanding?"Steve's face turned deathly pale. Seeing everyone's attention fixed on me, he clenched the hem of his shirt. It wasn't until I finished my speech that they slowly began to recover from the shock.Mom's sh

When I woke up the next morning, I saw a message from Audrey."Steve felt so guilty about what happened yesterday that he couldn't sleep and kept messaging me all night. Are you happy now? It's just a ring, for crying out loud."How did I never realize you could be so petty? Go apologize to Steve, and we'll put this whole thing behind us."I turned off the screen and flipped my phone face down. When I went downstairs, I ran into Mom and Dad, who had driven over to help Steve move his things.Their expressions stiffened the moment they saw me. Then, as if they'd just remembered that I had things to move too, they said, "We'll come help you after we finish moving Steve's things."I knew perfectly well that helping me had never been part of their plan.I waved a hand dismissively. "Don't bother."Just then, my phone rang. The movers I'd hired had arrived. Mr. Turner had recommended them, and he'd even helped me find an apartment close to the company I'd be working with on my new p
