Chapter 1

Chapter 1: Painful Betrayal

"Let me in!" I yelled, my tone sharpened with annoyance as I stood seething in front of the guards standing like statues in front of the gate. "I'm the Alpha's mate, for goodness' sake! I've been here since noon, and now it's almost dark."

My legs hurt from standing for so long, and fatigue held me back. I had to go see Cole. I had to make things right between us, but these guards were immovable.

"Who ordered you to do this?" I demanded, glowering at them. "Surely not the Alpha. I'm his mate!"

The lead guard looked over at his partner, who shifted uneasily before responding. "Miss Georgina requested keeping you out, and the Alpha agreed to it."

Georgina. Naturally, it was her. That scheming female. What had she done this time?

I balled my fists, anger building. "What does she want this time? And why should you be obeying her commands? She's not the Luna; I am!"

The guards gave each other nervous glances but remained silent. The sun went down, and they still didn't open the gate. I was tired, leaned against the cold fence, and rested my head against it, closing my eyes as the night engulfed me.

When morning came, the cold of the night still remained in my bones. The footsteps coming towards the gate jolted me awake. A pack member was coming in, and I took advantage.

"Let me in!" I insisted, my voice firm.

The guards paused as they opened the gate for the pack member. Without waiting for them to give me permission, I pushed past them, squeezing through the narrow gap before they could stop me.

"Hey!" one of them yelled, but I did not slow down.

I entered the pack house, my heart thudding, hellbent on finding Cole. I went up the stairs to the second floor, straight to his bedroom. My hand floated over the doorknob, and then the voices from inside stopped me.

"Are you sure of what you're saying, George?" Cole's voice was uncertain but gravely serious. "This is a serious accusation."

"Believe me," Georgina said, her voice insincere. "I did see it with my own eyes. Do I have a motive to lie to you, Cole?"

"I don't want to believe you," he admitted, his voice laden with skepticism.

She continued, her tone gentle and compelling. "I've been your best friend since childhood, Cole. I'd never lie to you. You need to know what I know. Bella isn't who you believe her to be."

I reeled backward, my heart plummeting. Were they discussing me? What had I done this time, according to Georgina?

I could not react in time; the doorknob had turned and the door creaked open. Cole walked out, his eyes meeting mine. I scoured his face for some spark of warmth, but there was only disgust.

He said nothing, giving me no chance to speak. He passed by me as if I did not exist.

Inside, Georgina was standing, a smug grin on her lips. "What did you say to him this time?" I asked, my voice shaking with rage.

She didn't reply but just smiled mockingly. My fists curled into themselves, but I turned away, knowing now wasn't the moment.

A moment later, a knock at my door. It was the Beta, his face unreadable. "The Alpha has called you to the courtroom," he stated curtly.

The courtroom? My gut was queasy. What was happening?

As I entered, the space was chill and foreboding, with a high ceiling graced by an elegant chandelier that reflected severe light off the council members assembled around a large table. Cole stood at its head, his eyes cold and unyielding.

"What is this?" I demanded, my voice trembling as I absorbed the hostile glances of the council.

Cole didn't respond, nor did he glance at me.

One of the council members, a middle-aged man named Thomas, stood to speak. "Miss Bella, you are here to account for your behavior. Surely you understand why."

"No," I said sharply, my voice increasing. "I don't."

Thomas arched a dubious brow. "You were found in a position unbefitting a Luna; several witnesses saw you with another man."

My breath caught in my throat. "Are you accusing me of cheating on Cole?"

"That's Alpha Cole to you," Thomas snarled.

I looked at Cole, hoping he would listen to me. "Cole, you know me. I would never."

"You will not speak unless spoken to," he cut in icily.

Thomas went on, "Miss Georgina says she saw you in a compromising position with another man."

I shook my head, tears welling in my eyes. "That's a lie! Cole, please."

"You should have thought of that before you betrayed me," Cole replied, his voice as cold as ice.

"I didn't do anything!" I begged. "You're my mate, my only one. Please, don't do this!"

But he held up his hand to stop me.

"I, Alpha Cole, reject you, Bella, as my mate, and I hereby banish you from this pack."

The words struck me like a body blow, stealing the air from my lungs. His eyes were cold, unmoving, as if I meant nothing to him. I collapsed to my knees, the load of his words suffocating me more than the chill ground beneath. My chest strained as the connection unwound, unraveled like strings of a one-time valued tapestry.

"I, Bella Reid," my voice broke, heavy with grief, "accept your rejection."

The words tumbled from my lips, every syllable a knife that cut through the connection holding us together. A flash of pain crossed his eyes, so brief I wondered if I imagined it. But he stood still, unmoving, his stance as hard as stone.

The pain in my chest became too much, and for an instant, I felt like I would break into a million pieces. My wolf whined in protest, the connection crying out for survival.

Tears poured down my cheeks as I staggered out of the room. When I arrived at my bedroom, the guards stood in my way.

"You can't take anything," one of them told me bluntly.

I dropped to my knees and wept. My world had collapsed in a moment.

As I ran from the pack house, I could hear Georgina's voice, venomous and triumphant.

"Kill her," she commanded the two men standing by her side, her smile growing wider as they moved toward me.

Chapter 2: Run for My Life
Her words echoed in my mind, sending a chill down my spine."Kill her," she had spoken, matter-of-factly, as if she had asked for a plate of food rather than my demise. The two men advanced, their faces impassive but their purpose unmistakable. I panicked. My body acted instinctively. I whirled around and ran headlong into the woods, my bare feet thumping against the earth as the smell of pine and earth rushed into my lungs.Branches scraped against my arms, and the cold night air nipped at my skin, but I didn't slow down. Their footsteps were mere inches behind, the thud growing louder by the second."You can't keep running, Bella!" one of them yelled. But I had no plans on slowing down. The woods were thick, and the moonlight struggled to penetrate the cover above. Chapter 3: Rick''s POV
I ride my horse, Shadow, through the forest of my pack's land. The rhythmic thud of his hooves on the ground calms me as I ride towards the cliff, a place that's got some of my favorite memories. It's been three years now since my dad died defending our pack from renegade wolves, but the cliff reminds me every time of the moments we spent here. When I was a pup, he used to take me here and show me the amazing view of my pack. The River Bed pack. From up here, the forest lies before me forever, and the stream flows elegantly below.Rick, never come here by yourself," he'd cautioned after discovering me at the cliff one afternoon. "It's not safe. What if a rogue attacks?"I assured him I just wanted to be as courageous as he was. Oh, how I miss him.The aroma of strawberries distracts me from my reverie. My wolf, Theo, stirs inside me, his anticipation growing. Our mate is close.I track the scent to the stream, where I spot her, a beautiful woman looking through the trees. Her loveline

Chapter 4: Bella's POV
Bella POVAfter Rick is gone, I pause to look around. The guest room is something I've never experienced. It's huge, with a high ceiling and an ornate chandelier hanging from it that sends a golden, warm light throughout the room. The walls are a soft cream and gold, and the furniture is sophisticated, with carvings and rich fabrics. A four-post bed draped in white, gauzy curtains dominates the space, and a plush carpet covers the hardwood floor. A comfortable sitting area by the window looks out over the forest, the view as lovely as a work of art.I've never been anywhere so lovely. It feels almost as though it's a dream, one into which I don't quite fit.My mind is interrupted by the entrance of Lily into the room. She has a tray of food in her hand, but her face is unfriendly. She is hostile as she places the tray of food on a table beside the bed."Why are you in our pack?" she asks harshly and accusingly. Her question surprises me. I step back involuntarily, not knowing what to

Chapter 5: The Revelation
I returned to the bedroom, in need of something clean. That need got the better of my hesitation. I entered into the bathroom and washed my face. After drying it, I went back into the bedroom, my eyes scanning the large walk-in closet. Slowly, I went toward it. Opening the upper drawer of Rick's dresser, I discovered one of his oversized white T-shirts. As soon as I was holding it, his smell overwhelmed me, piney earthiness combined with something peculiarly his. It was seductive and yummy. Without losing another second, I put it on. The material relaxed loosely over me, almost swallowing my body. The shirt only went up to my knees, and I did not even bother to search for anything else. I knotted my hair into a high bun and was getting ready to exit the room when there was a gentle knock at the door. Before I could answer, it opened. The omega, Lily, came in with a tray of food, and Rick was behind her. "I brought food up," Rick stated, his voice even. "I didn't think you'd want

Chapter 6: The Weight of Truth
The words lingered in the air, heavy and unshakeable.Rick's face changed, anger melting into something much more complicated—shock, disbelief, and something else I couldn't quite read. For a moment, the world stood still. He remained frozen in position, looking at me as if I'd just turned everything he believed on its head. The weight of my confession hung over us both like a choking mist. I tightened my shaking hands into fists, trying to ground myself, but it was no good. My body shook with fear and anticipation. At last, without a word, Rick turned and left the bedroom. The closing of the door behind him sounded louder than it should have, ringing out through the quiet. My chest constricted, and my legs weakened beneath me. I collapsed onto the chilly bathroom floor, huddling in on myself as if that would shield me from the tempest I knew to be building.Drawing my knees in close to my chest, I hid my face in my hands. The tile under me was cold, but I hardly noticed. All I could

Chapter 7: Rick's POV
Rick's POVMy feet took me to the living room, my breathing in rough, jagged gasps. The walls descended on me like closing clouds, the crushing weight of my anger bearing down like a storm that I could not hold. I wanted something to drown out this fury, to incinerate the nauseating thoughts churning in my brain. Impulsively, I turned towards the bar, my hands shaking as I reached for the bottle of whiskey. The golden liquid churned in the glass as I poured, my hand trembling. The initial sip burned my throat, but it wasn't sufficient. Nothing could quench the fire raging within me. I poured another, and this time my hand trembled so violently that I spilled some. I didn't care. The heat of the whiskey was nothing against the fire burning in my chest. How dare he? How dare he put his hands on her? On what was mine? The idea of him, of the man who had touched her, claimed her, and branded her, filled me with a burning, blinding fury. All these years, I had waited for my mate. I had wit

Chapter 8: Shadows of Jealousy
Bella sat silently on the balcony of Rick's room, gazing out over the sea of trees that seemed to go on forever into the horizon. The cool evening breeze swept across her skin, and for an instant, she allowed herself to be swept away by the memories of her childhood. Her parents had never kept anything from her. They'd discovered her as a baby, left in the forest. Her father had never known who her real parents were or why she'd been abandoned, but he'd loved her like she was his own. Her mother had been a different story—cold and distant, as though Bella herself was a painful reminder of something her mother couldn't articulate.Regardless of that, Bella had been raised near Georgina, the pack's Beta's biological daughter. They had been sisters, once, best friends who shared giggles and secrets. The daughters of the pack's Beta, they had grown up most of their lives in the company of Cole, the Alpha's sole son and Luna's son. The three had been best buddies, their friendship cemented d

Chapter 9: Rick's Proppsal
Bella… Rick spoke suddenly as he walked closer to her. "Can I ask you something? Why were you in the woods? Did someone chase you? Hurt you?" Bella gazed up at him, her ribcage rising and falling as she struggled with how much to tell him. Then, she made the decision. "I was pursued," she confessed, her voice gentle but firm. "Two of my old pack's warriors. I didn't know I was crossing your land." Rick's face changed to one of worry, then relaxed into something she couldn't quite identify. "Whatever it is," he said, his voice soft but authoritative, "I'm glad I was the one who found you. I've been waiting for you." Bella blinked in astonishment, her mouth opening as if to ask him, but he continued to speak before she could find her voice. "Bella… who is the child's owner?" His tone was infused with an unmistakable sadness, his dark eyes shining with unuttered pain. Her breath caught. A knot came into her throat, and her eyes blurred as the burden of his question bore down on h

Chapter 10: At Present
Five years later. The sun rose in the morning, shining through the curtains and creating warm rays of light within our abode. I heard the birds singing outside, the soft chirping of crickets, and the quiet current of the river in the background. It passed a cozy and serene feeling within me. Rick was not with me. He had already risen to join the warriors in patrolling the border. The door slowly creaked open, and my children rushed in into my room, their voices together as they chorused, "Good morning, Mom!" My four-year-old eldest son, Edsel, yawned and regarded me with energy-filled eyes. My two-year-old little boy, Gian, rubbed his eyes in a playful way. "Mommy, I want pancakes!" he barked. I grinned, bending to kiss their foreheads. "Well then, let's have some pancakes now," I said, winking at them. They laughed and ran into the kitchen. "It's all mine! I won't share with brother!" Gian announced. A chuckle burst forth from my mouth. I turned to gaze at my oldest son, Edse
