CHAPTER TWENTY

DOMINIC

I sat in my home office, nursing a glass of scotch I didn't need this early in the day. My laptop sat open on my desk, staring at me.

I came here to work but I had barely gotten anything done. My mind kept going back to Sophie. She was avoiding me, that much was clear, and it had something to do with the black card I found with the strange woman.

I already asked my accountant to block the card but that didn’t change the fact that Sophie and I had to talk.

My phone, which laid face down beside my laptop rang out, breaking my thoughts. I picked it up and answered the call without checking the caller.

“Sir,” My assistant’s voice sounded from the other end.

“What’s wrong?” I asked, immediately sitting up.

My assistant never called me, especially during the weekend except it was extremely important.

“Sir, you need to check the news now,” He said, sounding urgent.

“I won’t know what you’re talking about unless you tell me,” I told him. Asking me to check the news was

CHAPTER TWENTY SEVENDOMINICI felt her warmth before I even opened my eyes. She clung to me like I was her only hope. I almost huffed out a laugh as I stared at her. Ironic. She usually had her guards up high and always challenged me, but now, fast asleep, she held onto me tightly, laying on my chest.Sophie’s beautiful. I couldn’t resist the urge to take a closer look and so I brushed her hair from her face, taking my time to really look at her. But it was short lived as she stirred, and finally fluttered her eyes open. She sat up, yawning and stretching like a baby just taken out from its straddle. Then she glanced down and that was when she saw me.“What are you doing here?!” She frowned, glaring at me like I was an intruder.I tucked my arms under my head, resting on it, “Take your time and look around.” I said seriously, but she could hear the mocking smile beneath my voice. She paused, glanced around, then her eyes widened and her cheeks turned red like the memories of the ni

CHAPTER TWENTY SIXSOPHIE “Sophie?” Jasmine was the first to turn. Her eyes instantly went wide in panic, but she relaxed eventually, and a wide grin spread across her face. “Well, damn. You’re hotter in person, Dominic.”Dominic rolled his eyes and I contained the urge to shrink in embarrassment. I blinked at him, and though my vision was blurry, I didn’t need clarity to recognize the possessive energy that was radiating off him.His jaw was clenched, his brows were drawn low and his eyes, they were locked on me like I was his prey.Jasmine turned to me, laughing like nothing was out of place. “Thank goodness you’re here. We really had a good time!” She threw her arms around my shoulder like we were schoolgirls again.Dominic didn’t respond and his glare didn’t shift from me.“I mean, clubbing isn’t really her thing, but I couldn’t resist throwing a belated bachelorette party for her.” She added with a wink, “She really needed this.”My heart pounded so loud I could barely hear her

CHAPTER TWENTY FIVE SOPHIE In my entire life, I had never had a panic attack until now. When Dominic barged into my room, my initial thought was that he came to annoy me and talk down on me as usual. I never expected him to bring that up. He’d asked about Mira! How did he even get to know about her? I huffed loudly. Then again…who was I kidding? It was a miracle he didn’t find out sooner. Dominic was a powerful man and he had his ways. I should have told him the truth. I really should have because we were in this together, but like I said earlier, I panicked! Completely! My chest tightened. I couldn’t catch my breath. My hands wouldn’t stop shaking. I began pacing restlessly. My doubts were high that Dominic would stop here. I should just tell him the truth already. I turned to the door, ready to walk out of the room when my phone rang. It wasn’t a familiar number. I ignored it, but it rang again. With a defeated sigh, I answered the call. “Hel—“ “Hey, girl!” A lou

CHAPTER TWENTY FOURDOMINIC“…Unfortunately, I couldn’t send it via email when you asked for it, but here it is now,” My assistant stood before me, with a file in his outstretched hands. This was the first time he’d ever delayed, so naturally, it made my curiosity pique. His behavior was unusual and he seemed uneasy like whatever he found out didn’t sit right with him.“Leave it on the table,” I ordered and he did. He turned around to leave, but I stopped him, “What did you find out?”“Uhm,” He cleared his throat, “The lady, Judy Wellington, her record is clean. There’s nothing incriminating about her.”“But?” I leaned back, carefully watching him, because I knew that he couldn’t just leave me hanging.“There’s something weird. It seems like a part of her life was erased.” He said.“What do you mean?”He reached for the file, flipped it open and turned it so I could have a look. “It says here that she worked as a sales rep from 2016 to 2018. All her work and personal life is documente

CHAPTER TWENTY THREEDOMINIC“…After that time, she hasn’t tried again. Maybe she’s realized it’s worthless and disposed of it.” My assistant reported and I listened, phone in my ear as I strolled into the restaurant.“Keep an eye on her. People like her are always up to no good,” I said, then hung up.I sighed, flexing my shoulders as I walked in. My business associate was already sitting at a corner and I walked up to him. “Mr Hayes,” he greeted, standing up to shake me. “Mr Western,” I returned the gesture and took a seat.We exchanged brief pleasantries before diving into the meeting. I was engrossed in what he had to say, until an angry voice echoed through the quiet restaurant. “Hey, little girl, it’s either you sit your ass down or I’ll spank you till you can’t sit again!” A waitress, standing few tables from us, berated angrily.Irritation coursed through me. I picked this particular restaurant to have this meeting because it was known for its calmness and serenity. I didn’t

CHAPTER TWENTY TWOSOPHIE The sound of my phone buzzing woke me up from my restless sleep. For a moment, I contemplated ignoring it, but on a second thought, I stretched and grabbed it from my night stand.I took a glance at the screen. Judy. I quickly answered the call, standing up abruptly. “H..hello—““You’re messing with me, Sophie. Don’t make me mad!” Judy’s furious voice blasted through the phone. “What?” My brows were furrowed in confusion. “Meet me at the park now!” She said and hung up without waiting for my reply. What the hell was that? Judy was a scary woman but I’d never seen her as furious as this. What did she mean by that? She was one person I never wanted to offend and I’d tried my best to do that, so what was the problem?I rushed into my closet, put on the first outfit I saw, grabbed my purse and rushed out. I didn’t want to keep her waiting. Mira’s life was in her hands.I got to the park in no time where I saw Judy standing with her husband, Francis, but there
