What's Above?
What's Above?
Author: Ruth Anne Lofranco

One

I always had a dream of sunlight. The cold breeze of air in my face. But when I wake up, I know it’s not real.

My name's Agi. I've been here in the training building since I was so little that I couldn’t remember anything before I was here.

After the breakout of a deadly virus carried by the wind, the remaining humans finally gave up on finding a cure and they started to find another place.

There is no way to live up there, so we started to dig down. There are two societies separated by a gigantic force field barrier. The first one, is where all the survivors are. They work and live there.

While us, we are separated from our birth and we have to wait here at the training building while of course, training to be eligible to go on there and work for the government.

"Hey!"

I got back in reality when my roommate, Ana called me.

"It's time for breakfast! Come on, we dont want to be late on the bacons again!" she jokingly said.

I laughed at her and wore my slippers and get out of the room with her. Luckily, the lines were still short when we came and we caught up in the bacons.

It’s not that it didn't have that much supply, there's actually a lot of it. We don't run out of anything we need here. Clothes, food or gadgets you name it we have it here.

But once the food you like didn't caught up to you, you have no chance to ask for more because the AI's who is responsible to cook is programmed to cook only once in specific times.

We have silver trays at our hands with our food. I always tend to eat as much as I can because i might not know when i need it. We sat at our designated table where we sat with other three girls whose at Level 14.

We started to eat and when the other girl finish their food they left the table and that's when we started talking.

"I wonder what their bedrooms look like," Ana started the conversation.

"Maybe like a princess theme? With fluffy pink pillows?" I laughed at her.

"Hey! We're close," I seriously said to her as I am pertaining to being at the same level as the girls earlier.

She sincerely smiled at me and continued in eating

There are 15 levels and each higher level receive privileges not given to lower ones. Such as good bedroom and gadgets which can be use to contact their family in the first society.

"I'm so jealous of you," she suddenly said while pouting.

I dropped my fork and looked at her.

"What? Why?" I asked while confused.

"Your ability already developed. I don't even know what's mine."

"An--,"

"What if i my body won't respond to the drug?"

"A-"

"What if it won't develop?"

"That's no--"

"I'll be staying here foreve--"

"ANA!" I shouted.

I immediately realized what I did and tried to look around. Almost all of the other trainees looked at me for a second but then I was relieved when they go back to their foods one by one.

"Relax, okay." I held her hands.

"Some on Level 14 don't even have their abilities developed yet. We have different bodies, okay?" I assured her.

We're both Level 13 as of now and i don't understand neither why she's panicking over this and why did mine developed sooner.

All of us here go under same drug, it's nameless though. It's a government approved so we are sure it's safe. It forces the brain to reduce its limits thus making it even more powerful than before which results into developing abilities related to brain power.

Mine was developed earlier, as i've said and it's just another common ability. Telekinesis.

The main reason why we need this? In order to be eligible to graduate which means you are ready for the life in the first society is to be at level 15 which means you've mastered your developed abilities. After you've passed the test you will be inside a tube for several days and that's how they will travel you back to the first society where your work and family awaits.

There's so many of us here, I think we were about three thousand in numbers.

I don't plan to stay here for long. It just feel wrong to be here.

I didn't noticed that i was dazing out until Ana snapped me back into reality.

"Hey, we're late for Ms. Crami," she said.

I lifted my tray and walked right behind her heading to the sink where we put our trays after we eat.

After that we headed straight to the grounds. It sounds weird to me though. We call it ground, but under the ground. It's an open space and when you look up, there a whole grey ceiling, which is of course, artificial.

No rain. No sun. No Clouds.

I actually hated the fact that we study those. I've never actually seen one except for pictures.

We arrived at the grounds and lined up.

"Please form separate lines. Developed and under developed."

I nodded my head at Ana to assure her and comfort her at the same time.

It actually comforts me too. I kind of think it’s a bad thing but it lessen my anxiety knowing that i have abilities which can protect me. It's limited though.

I looked on the line I am with. It’s a long line and my eyes were caught up in the man standing at the end of it. He's wearing a casual uniform we had. Grey shirt and sweatpants.

I tilted my head and focused back on Ms. Crami who is in charge of us. She's our counsellor here. There were actually six of them but it’s her that we always see because she's the one in charge. She always wear the dark blue skirt and suit as her uniform that ultimately matches her white complexion and her blonde hair.

"We made some changes today. All Level 12 and above who is still underdeveloped will be under intensive care in the experiment room."

I shockingly looked at Ana who is now confused and terrified.

No. No way.
