When His Girlfriend Tried to Evict Me

Rosalie sent me another voice message right after. "Darry brought his girlfriend home today, didn't he, Elle? What's she like?" I told her the truth. "Not a good fit."Rosalie immediately called me. "How so? Is she not much to look at? Or does she have a bad temper?""She has a foul mouth."Rosalie fell silent for a couple of seconds before bursting into laughter. "Did she run her mouth at you? Well, she definitely picked the wrong target. My sister-in-law isn't someone who takes things lying down!" I let out a soft chuckle. "You know me best, Rosalie."After wrapping up the call, I shut the refrigerator door. Deep inside the freezer sat a bag of frozen ravioli. Rosalie had brought it over when she visited me last month. The year our parents passed away, I was ten, and Darrell was six. Dylan was 12 years older than me. After rushing home from the military base and taking care of the funeral arrangements, he stood in the living room, looked at Darrell and me, and said, "From

As soon as Vivian's words fell, Darrell froze. "Mr. Fisher? Which Mr. Fisher?"Vivian chirped, "He's George Fisher! Haven't you always wanted to work on a project with their company? I went out of my way to set up this meeting for you, and while I was at it…"She turned her head to look at Rosalie, the corners of her lips lifting. "I played matchmaker for Rosalie!"Rosalie's hand froze in midair. I set my knife and fork down. The moment George stepped into the room, his gaze swept across the table before landing squarely on Rosalie's face. "Who's this?" he asked Vivian, though his gaze never left Rosalie. Vivian immediately responded, "This is Rosalie Montgomery, Darrell's sister-in-law. She's such a sweetheart, but she's had a difficult life. Her husband passed away young. Why don't you two get acquainted?" Right after saying that, she added, "Mr. Fisher, you wouldn't mind, would you?"George plopped himself down unceremoniously. His gaze raked over Rosalie's face to her ha

George knelt in the middle of the wreckage, looking as though his soul had been sucked out of him.Darrell rushed out after us. "Elle!"I didn't look back. The moment the elevator doors closed, I heard George's hysterical roar from the private room. "This isn't over, Vivian!""You only have yourself to blame for being so useless!" Vivian shrieked back.As the elevator began its descent, their voices were cut off behind us. Rosalie reached out and took my hand in the elevator. "Your hand's shaking, Elle."Looking at my reflection in the elevator's mirrored wall, I realized my eyes were bloodshot. However, it wasn't because I was angry. It was largely because of what Rosalie had just said. When Dylan died, she had cried until she had no tears left to shed. All these years, she had raised Ryan and Riley on her own. Everyone who had crossed paths with her would tell her, "You're so strong, Rosalie." Yet, when she had straightened her back and said, "My husband died in the line o

Rosalie was startled and hurriedly tried to pull him up. "What on earth are you doing, Darry? Get up!""I messed up, Rosalie." Clutching her hand, Darrell sobbed like a child. "I seriously messed up, Rosalie. I didn't know she was that kind of person. I thought she just had a sharp tongue, but she wasn't bad at heart. I had no idea she harbored these intentions…" He cried so hard he could barely catch his breath. Rosalie's eyes misted over as well, and she reached out to wipe the tears away from his face. "There, there. Dry those tears. I don't blame you.""Rosalie…" Darrell sobbed louder. "When Dylan passed away, I swore I'd look after you and the kids for him, but I almost let someone sell you out… I'm trash…" "Come on now, stop crying," she coaxed him, patting his back. "I know you've always been so gullible, Darry. Dylan always said you were too earnest and needed someone to keep an eye on you. Now that he's gone, your sister and I will watch your back. It's okay."Darrell

I raised my phone again and resumed recording. The blond thugs were rooted to the spot in the doorway, exchanging bewildered glances. One of them discreetly fished out his phone and sent someone a message. Vivian charged out of the kitchen, a manic smile plastered across her face. "Danielle, where's Rosalie? Get that widow out here! She wasn't satisfied with jinxing her own husband, so now she wants to ruin her brother-in-law's marriage too?"As soon as the words left her mouth, a voice sounded from the doorway. "What did you just say? Who jinxed whose husband?"Vivian whipped her head around. I looked up as well. It couldn't have been Rosalie. Rosalie was still in the bedroom, soothing Ryan and Riley. The woman at the door was dressed in a police uniform. It was my cousin, Laurel Smith, from the Criminal Investigation Unit of the city police department. "You…" Vivian's madness was cut short.Laurel walked in, took one look at the destruction, and shifted her gaze to Vivia
