Chapter 1

Penulis: Goodtale
I slapped my younger brother, Darrell Crawford, across the face, and the air instantly went still.

His girlfriend, Vivian Gallagher, froze. For a moment, she was caught off guard.

When she came back to her senses, she immediately yanked Darrell behind her and snapped, "Did you just slap him? How dare you! You're just a widowed sister-in-law freeloading off your in-laws! What right do you have to lay a finger on him?"

Clutching his cheek, Darrell tugged at Vivian's sleeve. "Vivi, don't—"

Vivian flung his hand away, her eyes bulging. "Am I wrong? Your older brother has been dead for two years, and she still refuses to leave. What exactly is she trying to do?"

She whipped her head around to glare at me and shrieked, "I won't forget what you did today! Once Darrell and I tie the knot, you'd better pack your bags and leave!"

The red hand imprint was clear as day on Darrell's cheek. He parted his lips. "Elle—"

Without sparing him so much as a glance, I calmly met Vivian's gaze. "First of all, I have every right to discipline him. Secondly, come talk to me about whether you have the right when you're actually his wife. As of this moment, you're nothing but an outsider!"

Vivian's jaw dropped.

"Thirdly." I looked straight into her eyes. "This is my home. You're standing under my roof, calling me a freeloader, and you still expect to eat my food?"

I picked up the pumpkin pie she'd brought from the coffee table and thrust it back into her arms. Then, I raised my hand and pointed at the door. "Dinner's canceled. Now, leave!"

Clutching the box of pumpkin pie, Vivian's lips quivered. She whirled her head around to look at Darrell.

Tears welled up in her eyes in no time. Her pitiable demeanor was worlds apart from the haughty self a moment ago.

"Darrell, your sister-in-law's being so mean to me! Aren't you going to do something?"

Darrell was rooted to the spot. The left side of his face flushed so red it looked like it might bleed.

His eyes darted between Vivian and me. "Vivi, my sister—"

"Are you going to stand up for me or not?"

Darrell didn't dare to look at either of us. He hung his head like a student who was caught in the hallway by his teacher.

It took him a long while to force out, "Elle… Vivi didn't mean it like that. Don't be mad at her. She's not usually like this. She's just not good with words sometimes, but her heart's in the right place! Please don't hold it against her."

My gaze hardened. His words felt as though a heavy stone was pressing down on my heart. Vivian was arrogant, blatantly walking all over our late brother Dylan Crawford's "wife", yet he was still defending his girlfriend.

Vivian seethed, "Who isn't good with words? What did I do wrong? Are you going to build a life with me or your sister-in-law?"

Darrell visibly flinched.

Vivian hurled the pumpkin pie onto the floor. The box split open, and the pie skidded across the hardwood.

Then, she spun on her heel and stormed toward the door. "I know how this goes. I've read enough taboo and forbidden romance novels! Are you in love with her?"

"I'm not, Vivi. I can explain…" Darrell hurried after her.

The elevator doors slid shut, cutting off his voice.

I remained frozen in place in the living room. Bits and pieces of pumpkin pie littered the floor, beside a table of cold dishes and three sets of cutlery.

The sweet and sour ribs had been made with fresh ribs I bought from the butcher at 6:00 am that day. I had marinated them for two hours, deep-fried them twice, and glazed them to perfection. Now, a layer of white grease had congealed over the top.

I carried the dishes back into the kitchen, one by one. It would be a waste to throw them away, but I had no appetite to eat them either.

My phone vibrated in my pocket.

My sister-in-law, Rosalie Montgomery, had sent me a voice message. When I hit play, my two little nephews, Ryan and Riley Crawford's, adorable voices came through the speaker.

"Happy Thanksgiving, Aunt Danielle!"

Early the next morning, Darrell rang the doorbell. He had breakfast in one hand and a bag from a frame shop in the other. After stepping inside, he set the breakfast on the table, crouched in front of the television cabinet, and took Dylan's photo out of the bag. The new frame was made of dark wood grain. It was sturdier than the original one, with metal accents on the corners. He wiped both sides of the frame carefully with a paper towel and placed it squarely on the cabinet. Then, he took a couple of steps back to look at it, walked forward to adjust the angle slightly, and stepped back again. "Does this look right to you, Elle?"I walked over with a glass of orange juice to take a look. Dylan was dressed in his military uniform in the photo, standing straight and facing the living room, as if he was watching over our house. "It looks great."Darrell beamed. For the first time in a long while, his smile had a trace of his old self in it. …Three months later, Laurel texted

Rosalie gently patted his back, just like she used to when Darrell was little. "Alright, hush now. Don't cry. I don't blame you.""Rosalie…""Dylan told me you were too simple-hearted, and you'd have to take a few hard knocks in life before you'd wise up. Now that you've wisened up, I'm sure he's smiling down at us from above," Rosalie choked out.Looking at the two of them, I reached out, picked up the letter of commitment from the coffee table, and read through it from beginning to end. Darrell's handwriting had always been terrible. When he was in school, his teachers had specifically come to me to complain about it. Yet, the handwriting on this piece of paper was neater than anything he had ever written in his entire life. I folded the paper and placed it in the drawer. "I'll be keeping this."Darrell lifted his head from Rosalie's embrace and looked at me with red-rimmed eyes. "Elle, you're… willing to forgive me now?""That depends on my mood."For a moment, he froze.

Vivian's meltdown was the talk of the neighborhood group chat for three straight days. Someone had uploaded a secretly recorded video. In the footage, Vivian's hair was a mess as she trashed my apartment, while the two thugs stood at the door, looking utterly guilty. In the end, when Laurel pulled out her police badge, the comment section was filled with "Way to go!" and "Well done!"Darrell watched that video. He watched it at my place. After finishing it, he sat on the couch in silence for a long time. "Elle.""Yeah?""What did she break?" "The vase, the plates, and the tissue box.""How much were they?""She paid for them."He nodded, slipping back into silence. When I was tidying up the coffee table, I glanced at him. He had lost a considerable amount of weight. In less than a week since he sank to his knees and apologized to us, he had become noticeably thinner. His cheekbones had become more prominent, and there were dark circles under his eyes. Rosalie told me

I raised my phone again and resumed recording. The blond thugs were rooted to the spot in the doorway, exchanging bewildered glances. One of them discreetly fished out his phone and sent someone a message. Vivian charged out of the kitchen, a manic smile plastered across her face. "Danielle, where's Rosalie? Get that widow out here! She wasn't satisfied with jinxing her own husband, so now she wants to ruin her brother-in-law's marriage too?"As soon as the words left her mouth, a voice sounded from the doorway. "What did you just say? Who jinxed whose husband?"Vivian whipped her head around. I looked up as well. It couldn't have been Rosalie. Rosalie was still in the bedroom, soothing Ryan and Riley. The woman at the door was dressed in a police uniform. It was my cousin, Laurel Smith, from the Criminal Investigation Unit of the city police department. "You…" Vivian's madness was cut short.Laurel walked in, took one look at the destruction, and shifted her gaze to Vivia

At 3:00 pm, the doorbell rang. It wasn't the kind where someone presses it once and pauses, but the kind where someone holds it down for dear life. Riley burst into tears from the fright. Rosalie scooped him into her arms and carried him into the bedroom. I closed the bedroom door behind them before walking over to the front door. I looked through the peephole and found Vivian outside. Her hair was a tangled mess, and half her makeup was smudged. She was a far cry from the immaculate woman who'd held a wine glass and apologized to us the day before. Behind her stood two young men with bleached blond hair, who clearly looked like thugs recruited off the streets. I didn't open the door. Even through the door, her voice came through loud and clear. "Get your ass out here, Danielle Crawford! Only cowards hide inside! If you don't come out right now, I'm going to break down this door! "Listen here, my older brother runs with the underworld. So, you can't afford to mess with eith

Rosalie was startled and hurriedly tried to pull him up. "What on earth are you doing, Darry? Get up!""I messed up, Rosalie." Clutching her hand, Darrell sobbed like a child. "I seriously messed up, Rosalie. I didn't know she was that kind of person. I thought she just had a sharp tongue, but she wasn't bad at heart. I had no idea she harbored these intentions…" He cried so hard he could barely catch his breath. Rosalie's eyes misted over as well, and she reached out to wipe the tears away from his face. "There, there. Dry those tears. I don't blame you.""Rosalie…" Darrell sobbed louder. "When Dylan passed away, I swore I'd look after you and the kids for him, but I almost let someone sell you out… I'm trash…" "Come on now, stop crying," she coaxed him, patting his back. "I know you've always been so gullible, Darry. Dylan always said you were too earnest and needed someone to keep an eye on you. Now that he's gone, your sister and I will watch your back. It's okay."Darrell
