Chapter 3

Author: Goodtale
I jeered. "Ms. Gallagher, it seems you've misunderstood a few things."

The smile on her face froze for a moment.

"First of all, I am the sole owner of this house. My name's on the property deed, not Darrell's, and certainly not yours. So, if you want to make it your marital home, you should've asked me first."

I rose from my seat and towered over her. "Secondly, every single tile in this house was handpicked by my brother and me. That scratch on the wall marks Darrell's height measurement from middle school, and the wall you just said you wanted to tear down was covered with wallpaper that my mom personally put up before she died."

I stared at her. "So, you came in here, took one lap around the house, and decided you were going to gut my home?"

Vivian couldn't maintain her composure any longer.

Just then, Darrell emerged from the bathroom and froze. "What's going on here?"

She immediately grasped his arm and choked out, "Your sister's too much, Darry! I was trying to do her a favor by hunting for apartments for her. But instead of being grateful, she's kicking me out!"

He frowned. "Why are you apartment hunting for my sister?"

Vivian was stumped. Her embarrassment morphed into anger in no time. "Why are you yelling at me? I'm doing this for you!"

She turned to leave, swinging her arm carelessly as she did. Her hand caught the edge of the shoe cabinet, knocking the framed photo of Dylan and me off its surface. It hit the floor a second later, the glass shattering on impact.

Vivian froze, but she didn't apologize. "I didn't do it on purpose. It's your fault for leaving it right there!"

The blood drained from Darrell's face. When he met my ice-cold gaze, he instantly lost his nerve. He yanked Vivian's arm and dragged her outside.

Vivian stumbled out, yelling over her shoulder, "Why are you dragging me out? It's just a stupid picture frame! What's the big deal?"

The door clicked shut.

I crouched down. A shard of glass pricked my finger, but I paid it no mind.

I had taken this photo with Dylan when I graduated from college. It was also our last photo together.

And just like that, it shattered.

That night, Darrell sent me a message. "Vivi knows she was in the wrong, Elle. She has reserved a private room at The Crimson Pavilion tomorrow evening. She wants to apologize to you and Rosalie in person. I've already called Rosalie, and she's agreed to be there."

I ignored him.

Two minutes later, Rosalie texted me as well. "Darry told me what happened, Elle. The young lady didn't know any better. Since she wants to apologize to us in person, I think we should go. After all, we practically raised Darry. If we don't go, it'll strain our relationship."

Looking at the fold cutting across Dylan's face in the photo, I replied. "Alright."

Rosalie and I arrived at The Crimson Pavilion at 7:00 pm.

Vivian rose from her seat to greet us. She wore light makeup and a simple, elegant dress, making her look gentle and demure.

Once we took our seats, she picked up her wine glass and rose to her feet. "I'd like to propose a toast to you both, Rosalie and Danielle."

Her eyes misted over as she bent slightly forward. "I previously got the wrong idea. I spoke out of turn without knowing the full story and ended up hurting both of you. I especially shouldn't have said those awful things about you the other day, Rosalie.

"After I went home, the more I thought about it, the more I regretted it! Rosalie, you're raising two children on your own, and you're holding this family together. I shouldn't have said those things."

Rosalie reached out to pat the back of her hand, comforting her. "Alright, alright. Now that we've talked it out, it's all in the past. We're all family here. There's no need to stand on ceremony."

Lifting a glass of wine, Vivian apologized to me. "I completely misunderstood you, Danielle. I'm sorry."

I didn't accept it. So, she was left awkwardly holding it out, her eyes darting toward Darrell.

"Vivi has already apologized, Elle. Please forgive her," Darrell chimed in from the side.

I took the wine glass and, without taking a single sip, set it on the table.

Vivian seemed to breathe a sigh of relief. Then, she turned to the waiter and told them to bring out the dishes.

As soon as the dishes were served, the doors to the private dining room swung open. The very next second, a middle-aged man with a potbelly sauntered in. By the look of him, he was well into his 40s.

Vivian's eyes lit up, and she hurriedly stood up to greet him. "Mr. Fisher, you're here! Please, have a seat!"

Early the next morning, Darrell rang the doorbell. He had breakfast in one hand and a bag from a frame shop in the other. After stepping inside, he set the breakfast on the table, crouched in front of the television cabinet, and took Dylan's photo out of the bag. The new frame was made of dark wood grain. It was sturdier than the original one, with metal accents on the corners. He wiped both sides of the frame carefully with a paper towel and placed it squarely on the cabinet. Then, he took a couple of steps back to look at it, walked forward to adjust the angle slightly, and stepped back again. "Does this look right to you, Elle?"I walked over with a glass of orange juice to take a look. Dylan was dressed in his military uniform in the photo, standing straight and facing the living room, as if he was watching over our house. "It looks great."Darrell beamed. For the first time in a long while, his smile had a trace of his old self in it. …Three months later, Laurel texted

Rosalie gently patted his back, just like she used to when Darrell was little. "Alright, hush now. Don't cry. I don't blame you.""Rosalie…""Dylan told me you were too simple-hearted, and you'd have to take a few hard knocks in life before you'd wise up. Now that you've wisened up, I'm sure he's smiling down at us from above," Rosalie choked out.Looking at the two of them, I reached out, picked up the letter of commitment from the coffee table, and read through it from beginning to end. Darrell's handwriting had always been terrible. When he was in school, his teachers had specifically come to me to complain about it. Yet, the handwriting on this piece of paper was neater than anything he had ever written in his entire life. I folded the paper and placed it in the drawer. "I'll be keeping this."Darrell lifted his head from Rosalie's embrace and looked at me with red-rimmed eyes. "Elle, you're… willing to forgive me now?""That depends on my mood."For a moment, he froze.

Vivian's meltdown was the talk of the neighborhood group chat for three straight days. Someone had uploaded a secretly recorded video. In the footage, Vivian's hair was a mess as she trashed my apartment, while the two thugs stood at the door, looking utterly guilty. In the end, when Laurel pulled out her police badge, the comment section was filled with "Way to go!" and "Well done!"Darrell watched that video. He watched it at my place. After finishing it, he sat on the couch in silence for a long time. "Elle.""Yeah?""What did she break?" "The vase, the plates, and the tissue box.""How much were they?""She paid for them."He nodded, slipping back into silence. When I was tidying up the coffee table, I glanced at him. He had lost a considerable amount of weight. In less than a week since he sank to his knees and apologized to us, he had become noticeably thinner. His cheekbones had become more prominent, and there were dark circles under his eyes. Rosalie told me

I raised my phone again and resumed recording. The blond thugs were rooted to the spot in the doorway, exchanging bewildered glances. One of them discreetly fished out his phone and sent someone a message. Vivian charged out of the kitchen, a manic smile plastered across her face. "Danielle, where's Rosalie? Get that widow out here! She wasn't satisfied with jinxing her own husband, so now she wants to ruin her brother-in-law's marriage too?"As soon as the words left her mouth, a voice sounded from the doorway. "What did you just say? Who jinxed whose husband?"Vivian whipped her head around. I looked up as well. It couldn't have been Rosalie. Rosalie was still in the bedroom, soothing Ryan and Riley. The woman at the door was dressed in a police uniform. It was my cousin, Laurel Smith, from the Criminal Investigation Unit of the city police department. "You…" Vivian's madness was cut short.Laurel walked in, took one look at the destruction, and shifted her gaze to Vivia

At 3:00 pm, the doorbell rang. It wasn't the kind where someone presses it once and pauses, but the kind where someone holds it down for dear life. Riley burst into tears from the fright. Rosalie scooped him into her arms and carried him into the bedroom. I closed the bedroom door behind them before walking over to the front door. I looked through the peephole and found Vivian outside. Her hair was a tangled mess, and half her makeup was smudged. She was a far cry from the immaculate woman who'd held a wine glass and apologized to us the day before. Behind her stood two young men with bleached blond hair, who clearly looked like thugs recruited off the streets. I didn't open the door. Even through the door, her voice came through loud and clear. "Get your ass out here, Danielle Crawford! Only cowards hide inside! If you don't come out right now, I'm going to break down this door! "Listen here, my older brother runs with the underworld. So, you can't afford to mess with eith

Rosalie was startled and hurriedly tried to pull him up. "What on earth are you doing, Darry? Get up!""I messed up, Rosalie." Clutching her hand, Darrell sobbed like a child. "I seriously messed up, Rosalie. I didn't know she was that kind of person. I thought she just had a sharp tongue, but she wasn't bad at heart. I had no idea she harbored these intentions…" He cried so hard he could barely catch his breath. Rosalie's eyes misted over as well, and she reached out to wipe the tears away from his face. "There, there. Dry those tears. I don't blame you.""Rosalie…" Darrell sobbed louder. "When Dylan passed away, I swore I'd look after you and the kids for him, but I almost let someone sell you out… I'm trash…" "Come on now, stop crying," she coaxed him, patting his back. "I know you've always been so gullible, Darry. Dylan always said you were too earnest and needed someone to keep an eye on you. Now that he's gone, your sister and I will watch your back. It's okay."Darrell
