And do what?

- Josephine -

I’m so uncomfortable.

My corset is far too tight, my hair is painfully pinned up, and the lace of my dress is scratching the top of my breasts. I can’t even put my hands in my lap without the beading on my skirt clawing at my skin.

The smell of wildflowers and cow dung is filling the air, and the rough jostling of the carriage is making me nauseous.

I couldn’t believe this was happening.

Four months ago my father had passed away, leaving me alone and at the mercy of the courts. As an unmarried 19 year old I was to be sent to Lord Leven’s estate to become his ward until he could successfully marry me off.

I knew this was happening, so why now, on the way to my new life am I so scared?

I closed my eyes and swallowed the lump in my throat.

“Just breathe my lady.”

I opened my eyes and looked at my maid Aria. She had been with me for years, and felt like the only family I had left.

I smiled, drawing a deep breath. She smiled back at me, pleased I was following her instructions.

“How much longer Aria?”

She frowned and gently shook her head.

“I’m not sure my lady. Do you need to stop?”

I couldn’t bear it any longer. I nodded frantically while clutching my chest. Aria reacted immediately, banging her hand on the roof of the carriage.

“Woah! Woah there!”

The hoses slowed and the carriage came to a gentle stop.

I didn’t wait for the door to be opened for me. I scrambled to my feet, flung the door open, and yanked myself and my ridiculous dress out of the carriage, causing Aria and the driver to gasp loudly.

“My lady!” She called after me.

I didn’t care, I ran to the grass and leaned over coughing violently.

I so badly wanted to vomit, but nothing came. I suddenly felt a gentle hand on my back. Aria was now standing next to me, handing me a handkerchief.

She gently whispered, “Josephine, are you alright?”

I straightened up and took her offering, dabbing the fabric on my mouth.

“No.” I replied, unable to hide my panic. “I don’t want to go, I don’t want to be there. Why do I have to marry? Father never forced me to. If I were 21 the estate would be mine, and I’d be free to do what I want to.”

Aria sighed and looked out into the field. The reason why I loved her, why our friendship was so strong, was we were able to be completely honest with each other. I could tell her anything freely, without fear of betrayal, and in return she spoke to me in a way that no other lady’s maid would dare.

She took a deep breath, turned, and looked at me sternly.

“And do what?”

“What do you mean?” I replied.

“Say you were 21, you’d have your estate, your title, and a modest fortune. What would you do then?”

I paused, I hadn’t really considered it.

“I would travel, I want to admire the art and architecture of the world. I would be free to do as I pleased.”

“….and you can’t do that as a married woman?”

I scoffed at her suggestion.

“No, you know what men are like. I would be confined to the house, with nothing to do but needle point and produce offspring.”

“You don’t know what kind of man your husband will be.” She sighed. “Besides, you can’t spend your life painting and dancing, rolling around in the hay with the stable boy when you get bored.”

I looked at her stunned. I opened my mouth to speak but no words came out. Aria took my hand, rubbing it gently with her thumb.

“Come on, we have to go. No matter what happens, I will be with you every step of the way.”

We shared a smile, and I reluctantly walked towards the carriage. Before I entered I turned to face her.

“What if he beats me?”

Aria chuckled and brushed a strand of hair out of my face.

“Then God help him! I don’t know who would kill him first, you or me.”

  • When Love Rivals Marriage    Hello Miss Felton

    - Josephine - I stood and looked at the painting sat on the easel in my rooms. I had so much fun with Tristan this morning, though I think he drew on himself more than the paper. I chuckled to myself remembering his stained fingers streaking charcoal on his face everytime he moved his hair out of the way. A knock on the door pulled me from my thoughts and I made my way slowly to the door. “Good afternoon my Lady.” Mrs Crooks stood in the doorway. She glanced at the painting and scowled at it judgementally before looking back at me. I pretended not to notice and brightly smiled at her. “Hello Mrs Crooks, how can I help you?” “You have a visitor in the lounge.” My heart stopped. “A visitor? Who?” She plastered a smile on her face that didn’t quite meet her eyes, and replied. “Master Hugo my Lady. Shall I make some tea?” I tried to remain calm and aloof but my ragged breaths gave me away. “Thank you, yes. Please tell him I will be there shortly.” After I gathered myself and l

  • When Love Rivals Marriage    I felt vengeful

    - Josephine - I walked down the hallway, still glowing from last night’s antics. As I came down the stairs I was set upon by Tristan, who was incredibly excited to see me. “Joey! I have a surprise for you, come with me.” I was starting to get used to running around in a tornado of excitement. His happiness was infectious, and while I was holding his hand I felt no embarrassment rushing through the house behind him. He led me into the sun room, and I instantly saw two large easels and a selection of charcoals on a table between them. “What are we doing Tristan?” He turned to face me, still clutching my hand. “I meant it when I asked you to teach me how to draw Joey, but I thought about how boring you’re finding flowers”. He released my hand and turned towards a small stage behind the easels. He arranged sheets over a stool and cried out, “John! We are ready for you my man.” A man appeared wearing a robe, and climbed the stage in front of Tristan. I furrowed my brows in confus

  • When Love Rivals Marriage    I would definitely be doing this again

    - Josephine - I lay there feeling my chest rise and fall. I took a deep breath and attempted to slide the dildo inside of me. I was instantly met with resistance, but I didn’t push. I quickly realised that the experience was supposed to be pleasurable and I had to be in the right state of mind. I placed it next to me on the bed, closed my eyes and started kneading and squeezing at my breasts. It didn’t take long for my nipples to harden and a familiar warmth stirred inside of me. I gently pinched at my nipples, causing me to whimper as I relaxed into the moment. My legs began to tingle, so I gently scratched the top of my thighs and felt them quiver. I tried to remember how I felt in the bathtub this morning as I writhed in the water. Thoughts of Hugo came flooding back. I thought about his strong arms holding me as he looked at me with that devilish grin. I could imagine us back in the ballroom, but this time I pulled him close and wrapped my arms around his neck. I cou

  • When Love Rivals Marriage    Was I really going to do this?

    - Josephine - I had begun to look forward to the Leven family dinners. Tristan babbling with his funny jokes and outrageous stories, Elodie filling us all in on the latest gossip, Lady Leven telling us which flowers were blooming next in her garden. It was routine, but a wonderful routine. Lord Leven sat at the top of the table, lovingly watching his family. The only person that stood out was Silas. Goodness knows what he was thinking about. He ate his meal quietly, and only really responded to his mother. Even with his misery, I still looked forward to this nightly ritual. I was having fun, but I was keen to be alone with my new present. “Shall we sit together? I fancy a game of cards” Lady Leven said, looking at us all eagerly. “I think I’m going to head to bed my Lady, Elodie and I had a long day in town.” I replied. “Oh.” She was clearly disappointed. “Another time Miss Felton.” “Yes my Lady.” I reassured her. “I’d love to play another time.” Elodie wasn’t a fool, she knew

  • When Love Rivals Marriage    Thank you Elodie, I love it.

    - Josephine - “He danced with you?” Aria had asked that question repeatedly since I told her about the ball. “Yes Aria! Silas danced with me.” “Goodness.” She was clearly in deep thought as she prepared my bath. I didn’t care about Silas, or what he was trying to achieve. I couldn’t stop thinking about Hugo and his gentle touch. “Your bath is ready my Lady.” I walked over, dropped my robe and climbed inside. The warm water rose around my body as I lowered myself. I sighed deeply as I relaxed in the bath. “Thank you Aria.” She bowed dutifully and quietly left the room. The bath had been perfectly placed by the window. I could see the tops of the trees in the garden, and the sunlight cast rainbows in the water. It was heavenly. I began to wash myself, caressing my naked body. I couldn’t stop thinking about Hugo. How he had held me, and stroked my back with his thumb. I thought about his deep brown eyes, and how they were fixed on me. My nipples were hard and I could feel a

  • When Love Rivals Marriage    I wouldn’t say that Miss Felton

    - Josephine - Elodie looked at me for a moment, then back at Hugo. Eventually, she took my hand and led me towards him. As soon as he saw I was walking over, his devilish grin reappeared. “Hugo.” Elodie addressed him. “This is Miss Felton. She is living with us as our Father’s ward.” I smiled so eagerly that my cheeks began to ache. He took my hand, and gently kissed it. “Hello Miss Felton, it’s a pleasure to meet you. May I have this dance?.” My heart leapt into my throat. I handed Elodie my glass, and she gave me wink before I turned and took Hugo’s hand. He led me onto the dance floor, before turning and slipping his hand around my waist. I could feel my face flushing red at his touch. The music swelled and we began moving across the floor. He was strong but gentle, and held me with the perfect amount of pressure. I so badly wanted to close the gap between us and press my body against his. “How are you finding the countryside Miss Felton? Quite different from the

  • When Love Rivals Marriage    Does she have cause to be jealous?

    - Josephine - I had been waiting years for this moment, my first ball. Aria was rushing around primping and pulling me, making sure I looked perfect. “Pearls my Lady?” I turned to see her nervously holding up two different earrings. “No, I think the sapphires to match my dress.” She nodded ea
