The air conditioner in our apartment was broken. I asked my wife, Maya Cullen, several times if we could buy a new one, but she refused every time. "Evan, just hang in there a little longer. As soon as we get paid next month, we'll buy one." It was 102 degrees outside. Every night, we lay awake fanning ourselves, exhausted from the heat. I couldn't stand watching Maya suffer, so I borrowed 5,000 dollars from a friend and gave her the money to order an air conditioner. She placed the order, yet it never arrived. After I asked her about it twice, Maya finally lost her temper and slammed her phone down. "Evan, are you serious? It's a little heat. Deal with it. I'm swamped with work, and I don't have time to worry about your stupid air conditioner!" I quietly picked up her phone and didn't mention it again. Two weeks later, while Maya was in the shower, I used her phone to check the delivery status. It said the air conditioner had already been delivered. But not to us. It had been delivered to an address in another city. I spent ages arguing with the shipping company, but they insisted they hadn't made a mistake. With no other option, I called the person who signed for it. "Hi. I'm calling about an air conditioner you received a few days ago. I think it may have been delivered to the wrong address..." The man on the other end sounded confused. "That can't be right. My wife bought that air conditioner. We had it installed a few days ago." His wife? My breath caught. When I finally spoke, my voice was unsteady. "Is… Is your wife's last name Cullen?"

When My AC Went to Her Husband Chapter 9
Evan Carter's POVAfter spending a month at home with the Bennetts, I finally felt ready to start looking for work again.Unfortunately, the scandal had followed me.I applied to company after company, only to have most of the bigger firms reject my résumé before I even made it to an interview. That was when Avery suggested I try an international company instead. She had recently accepted a transfer herself. Her company was sending her abroad to head one of its regional offices, and she would be based there for at least two years. Then she asked if I wanted to go with her.It would be a fresh start. In another country, no one would know who I was. There would be no strangers recognizing my face, no whispers behind my back, no one judging me over a scandal that had never been my fault in the first place.I could finally leave everything behind and start living for myself again.I didn't hesitate. "Let's do it."With Avery's recommendation, I applied for a position at the sa

Evan Carter's POVI'd been back with the Bennetts for several days.Jenny kept finding excuses to make me all my favorite meals, while Peter was constantly asking me to join him for a game of chess.Neither of them mentioned what had happened in Northbridge. Then one evening, Avery came home looking furious. She kicked off her shoes, walked straight over to me, and fixed me with a look dark enough to make my stomach sink. "Evan, Maya's here."I hesitated. Part of me wanted to stay exactly where I was and pretend I hadn't heard her. But after a long moment, I got up and went outside.Maya was standing just beyond the front gate, her back rigid. "Evan." Her eyes were red as she said my name. She looked nothing like the woman I'd left behind in Northbridge. In just a few weeks, she'd grown noticeably thinner, exhaustion written all over her face."Come home with me, Evan.""Home? What right do you have to ask me to go anywhere with you, Maya? Tell me. Are we even married?"Th

Evan Carter's POVThe next time I turned on my old phone, messages from Maya came pouring in one after another.I'd bought a new phone and changed my number when I left, determined to make a clean break from my old life. The old one had been sitting untouched ever since, and I'd only recently remembered I still had it.I opened my messages and slowly scrolled through them until I reached Maya's apology text. "I'm sorry."Whenever we'd fought in the past, I had always been the one to say those words.I was always the one who apologized first and gave in.Now, for once, Maya was the one apologizing. But it didn't matter anymore."Evan? What's wrong? Did you have another nightmare?"Avery Bennett hurried over, concern written across her face. Her eyes flicked toward my phone, and her expression immediately grew serious. "Did Maya contact you?"I shook my head and managed a small smile. "No. Nothing like that, Avery. You don't have to worry about me.""How am I supposed to not

Third-Person POVA few days later, the controversy surrounding the press conference finally died down. Now officially in charge of Cullen Group, Maya took the first opportunity she could to fly back to Northbridge. She pushed open the familiar front door, expecting to find Evan sitting on the couch waiting for her, just as he always did whenever she came home from a business trip. But the house was empty."Evan?" No answer.Maya rushed straight inside. Evan's side of the closet was bare. Everything he kept in the bathroom was gone too.Their matching mugs were down to one. So were their toothbrushes and slippers. He had taken everything that belonged to him, erasing every trace that he'd ever lived there. And just like that, Evan Carter had disappeared from her life without a word.Maya stood frozen in the middle of the living room as the room seemed to tilt beneath her feet. She caught herself against the wall, her face drained of color. Then she pulled out her phone and
