~Moxie~

“Mate.” My wolf growls out in my head as my eyes remain locked on the powerful male standing before me.

My body remains frozen as it battles with itself in a fight or flight mode.

“Come on Moxie, do something!” My mind shouts at my body to move. He just killed one of his own without a second thought…he won’t think twice before he tries to murder me too.

Blood seems to start flowing again in my legs as I slowly bend down, reaching for the knife on the woodland ground. His eyes trail down also, following my movement…but not preventing it.

As soon as my fingers snake around the knife handle, I jump backwards, raising the weapon and pointing out at him.

“Stay back!” I order out, my luna aura thick as my lips curl up into a warning snarl. It then hits me again…that intoxicating scent…rich tones mixing with a mouthwatering darkly sweet scent. My body is yearning to hum out with satisfaction, to go against all my twenty-one years of lethal training…to rub my scent on him….to strangely mark my territory.

“Stop it!” I seethe out through gritted teeth, warning my wolf to quit the fur side antics.

“Stop what?” His deep commanding voice responds…my entire body vibrating at the sound.

“No, this can’t be happening…you need to stay away.”

“Mate.” He growls out, taking a step closer towards me…mercilessly stepping over the wolf he just killed by his own bare hands.

His teeth snap with a similar hunger. My wolf reacts before I can stop her, seeing his action as an immediate threat she pushes forward, ignoring my pleas to keep distance between us.

She takes control of my body, raising the knife to his neck and pressing it against his skin, one more movement from him and I’ll slice through his throat.

He’ll bleed out before me.

“I’m not your mate.” I growl back at him, my teeth flashing with anger as I start to hear whistling in the distance…the Moon River patrol searching nearby.

“You’re a mutant.” I snarl out, my hand pushing the knife further into his skin, cutting against his flesh. Drops of his blood start to trickle down onto the back of my hand. I’m in control, but fear starts to grip me in the chest…can the infection pass from carrier through blood.

In my dream I was covered in cuts…what if they remained with me…

We are so close that I can feel his heated breath dancing upon my collar bone. He’s tall, exceptionally so…his white eyes sparkle with a pearlescence that I hadn’t noticed in any other mutant before…theirs were blank, a white canvas…no life left behind them.

Yet his still show a purpose…a reason to live.

He is well kept, his tightly curled black hair shines healthily…the complete opposite to the fur of the scrawny deceased wolf now decaying beneath us. I shake my head; I need to remain focused.

The blood continues to drip on my hand but one glance to check for any cuts and he’ll use it against me.

Anton painfully ploughs through my mental block, the walls crumbling down as he demands to know of my location. He has responded to my report a little too late.

His furious alpha command manages to break through my mind block through the mate link.

He knows where I am…I can’t have him see out through my vision. Not even for a millisecond.

I slam my eyes shut, forcing him out through the mate link when my legs are knocked out from under me, a hand grips my wrist, the other holds onto my side. I prepare myself for the air to be knocked out of my lungs, however it doesn’t come.

Holding the block on the mate bond firmly, I open my eyes to find the strikingly white pair of eyes even closer than before. My entire body forgets how to function again as I lay underneath him…his eyes focused on something behind me.

Inside my body is screaming at me to move, to run as far away from him as possible before he shifts and his pointed fangs bite into me…before he eats on my flesh. I can’t fight him, I know that ….so why is there a part of me wanting to wait, a twisted part of me that bizarrely thinks he won’t hurt me.

“It’s just my border patrol.” I calmly state out as fear grips me as his teeth flash at the men simply following orders.

“Your border patrol?” I gain his attention, his eyes snapping away from the approaching border patrol and on to me. That intoxicating scent oozes out of him, his eyes shimmer with a pearlescent as he stares back at me…his hand tightening against my lower back.

“Your father, he is the alpha?” He sinks even closer to me; the words seethed through clenched teeth. He sniffs the air around me, a purr vibrating from his chest….he must have noticed my scent too.

“No, my husband.” I coldly state back; pure hatred laced in my words as he has me trapped between him and the ground.

“Husband…” An animalistic growl emits from his lips, his jaw tensing as I remain trapped under his brute strength. This is no longer a fight of the fittest, I am going to have to talk my way out from under him….and for some reason which I can’t understand, he seems lucid.

If it wasn’t for the white eyes, I would question if he was even infected.

“Reject him.” He orders out.

“What?”

“You will reject him!”

“Get your hands off me.” I push back on his chest, trying to kick out from under him but he is stronger than Anton…stronger than any male I have come across.

“I command it, you will obey.” His hand snakes up from my waist and around my throat.

“Whoever you think you are…”

“I’m your mate!” His fingers squeeze around my throat, the back of my head slams into the hard woodland ground beneath me.

“No mate of mine is an infected.” I seethe out loathingly, ignoring the pain rippling through the back of my head…my vision turning dizzy.

“Then reject me.”

“Get off me and I will.”

He finally moves off me, my body instantly lighter from the removal of his weight. I move out away from him, keeping my knees bent as I prepare for an attack. He cannot be trusted; he is one of them after all.

“I’m waiting.” He arrogantly declares but not before his lips curl into a smirk…his arms crossing in front of his chest as he confidently glares back at me…waiting for me to reject this connection between us.

“Waiting for what? I’m surprised you can feel anything, aren’t you already dead inside?” I coldly snap back, the faces of my parents flashing through my mind as I glare murderously back at him.

“You’ll soon learn little wolf, that waiting isn’t in my mindset.” He strides towards me, closing the space I had put between us.

“Luna?” I hear voices gaining on us again, Beta Randall calling out for me….footsteps gaining on us.

If they catch him, they will kill him.

I want him dead too…I need them all dead. Not even one can remain alive.

“I’m here.” The words are on the tip of my tongue…yet I seem unable to say them.

Something inside of me…something deep within my core is telling me to wait, that he has a purpose.

“Go!”

“What?”

“Before they come and kill you. Go!”

“No one can kill me, little one.” I flinch as his hand strokes the side of my face, his touch causing tingles to erupt upon my skin. An explosion of fireworks explode in my lower core…a yearning that Anton has never created in me.

He slips away, back into the shield of the tree line, but not before he gives a parting promise.

“Our paths will cross again….I’ll make sure of it.”

And I don’t doubt him.

  • When the World Ended, the Moon Chose Me   Chapter 26 - A taste of her own medicine

~ Heath ~ How long have I been in this goddess forsaken morgue, and what is even the time of day. There are no windows in this deadly place, and I suppose why would there be…the dead need not enjoy pretty views….or sunshine. All I can do is stare into the darkness, trying to guess the time of day. My wolf is itching for me to return to my pack, to my people. I don’t know how many days I have been away but I can feel the urge to report to Dane festering from the inside. I haven’t been gone this long before. I can leave at any time, but Moxie made it apparent that she knows of more mutated wolves. That the male laying next to me isn’t her first case, contrary to what she tells her beta. Why is she even testing in the morgue, hidden away like a dirty secret in the basement. I can’t deny how my intrigue has been piqued and I plan to find out what the little wolf is playing at. But I am running out of time. If I fail to return soon, Dane will start to follow pack protocol to protect

  • When the World Ended, the Moon Chose Me   Chapter 25 - The alpha wakes.

~ Moxie ~ “Nemisis…Anton doesn’t like anyone that doesn’t follow his rules.” I roll my eyes, the word used too often in the alpha household against other alphas. “Well let’s just say this Alpha Heath certainly isn’t afraid to go against werewolf council laws. If it benefits his pack…hence the rivalry between him and Alpha Anton.” Randall pulls his phone out to load a picture of Anton’s and mine’s wedding day. “Rivalry?” I shrug my shoulders at him, this is the first I am hearing of this. “He was one of the only alpha’s not invited to your wedding, that’s why you haven’t heard of him until now. Anton refuses to acknowledge him as an alpha.” I continue to stare at the photograph of all the alphas gathered around Anton and I. Alphas that I had never met before, alphas that I will never meet again. The entire day was just for Anton to show off his pack and his new bride. A performance wedding because he was sleeping with my maid of honour behind my back. I search for his face i

  • When the World Ended, the Moon Chose Me   Chapter 24 - Identifying the alpha

~ Moxie ~ “I just don’t get it.” I say more to myself than Randall as I pull my eyes away from the microscope, refocusing on the room around me. My eyes are beyond dry…I can feel the redness spreading across the rim of my eyelids. I think I am even past the stage of being able to fall asleep, I would just lay awake staring at the ceiling, all the scientific formulae’s for a cure flashing across my vision. I’m even starting to question whether I am slowly turning mad.“Don’t get what?” Randall asks out as he walks towards me having returned to the morgue. “How perfect this virus is..”“Perfect?” He scoffs out placing a sandwich and bottle of water in front of me.“Thank you…” I tiredly smile out to him reaching for the cold bottle and placing it to the side of my face to ease the heated ache that refuses to leave my cheeks. “…just the way it attaches itself to the cells. It’s perfect…nothing seems to be touching it, not even slowing it down.”“You’ll find something, I know you w

  • When the World Ended, the Moon Chose Me   Chapter 23 - Never escaping

~ Heath ~ Over the next few days things started to feel weird through the pack link, it was giving off its own aura. At the time I knew something was wrong, I just couldn’t put my finger on it. Still locked within this vivid dream, I watch myself as if a god-like-figure from the shadows. I feel somewhat embarrassed looking back as I lead a training session. It was the second one of the morning, the qualified warriors having already finished and now patrolling the borders, this session was now for the juniors. My arrogance oozes out of me, an untouchable alpha, ready for what the werewolf world throws at him. Trained by the best, by his father….nothing could touch me then, I was indestructible or so I thought. Just as with the infected single werewolf invading my borders, I can see the shift in my composure when it dawns on me that something has changed. It was at this time that I felt the first life force tied to me through the pack link snap. While I was strengthening the next

  • When the World Ended, the Moon Chose Me   Chapter 22 - Forever remembered

~ Heath ~Some part of my mind is aware that I am falling back into a dream state. The fleetingly semi conscious part of me is screaming out, clawing at the insides before it is too late. But no matter how hard I fight against it, the sedative remains too strong, and I fall at a dishearteningly plummeting speed back into the memory I try every waking minute to avoid.I’ve repeated this day in my dream’s countless times, and nothing changes. No matter how hard I shout out, how I reach for someone, they become a silhouette, my fingers clasping at smoke. It is the night the first case of the disease reached my pack lands. At the time it started like any other night, there were no signs of the terror it would cause. It had taken me completely by surprise. It starts out the same every time, me signing documents in my alpha office before calling it a night. A routine I have done since taking on the alpha role every single night. Yet this night would be the one the gods declared war upon th

  • When the World Ended, the Moon Chose Me   Chapter 21 - Silly Little Wolf

~ Moxie ~ We couldn’t have planned it better. Once Randall had reversed the vehicle into the loading bay, he removed patient zero before locking the ambulance back up and leaving me alone with the alpha. He then returned with an empty body bag, and together we smuggled the mutant alpha into the Moon River hospital as if he was a pack member that had fallen in defending the pack I am a Luna of. In an ideal world I would run my tests in my own laboratory, with everything I need at arm’s reach but it would be too risky. Although Heath would remain unconscious, all it would take is Anton to get a small glimpse of him to know he isn’t a pack member through the missing pack link between them. It is far better to keep Heath hidden, to run my tests in the morgue. It will take me longer due to having to access equipment and smuggle them out of my lab, but this is my only option. I busy myself making more sedative, it’s proven that it works I just don’t know how long for. I need to be p
