The staircase descended steeply, each step heavier than the last. Cassie clung to Reggie’s hand, the air growing thicker and warmer. It was laced with leather, incense, and the faint metallic tang of anticipation. Bass throbbed beneath their feet like a second heartbeat, growing louder with every downward stride until it vibrated in her chest.

At the bottom, a doorman in a leather harness and plain black mask nodded them through heavy velvet curtains. The space beyond stole Cassie’s breath.

  • Whispers of Submission    After party

They had done it. Doctor Cassandra. The title felt foreign and perfect all the same. Asher moved close and pressed something cool and metallic into her palm. It was a sleek black key. “This is for you,” he said. “The house is big enough for your books, plants and whatever else the next chapter throws at you. It is done.” Cassie stared at the keys, then up at him. “Asher…” He shrugged, sheepish. “You are my little sister, you deserve everything good. Let me do this for you.” She launched herself at him again, hugging him tightly enough that he laughed and steadied himself with the cane. “You’re impossible,” she whispered against his shoulder. Her breath caught. “You… built me a house?” Asher grinned. “I had a lot of time to think while I was healing. I figured you deserved a new house, that you can call yours. The deed’s already in your name.""And what about mom's house?" Cassie asked, tears welling her eyes."You can keep it. Rent it out or use it for vacation or something

  • Whispers of Submission    D-day

When Cassie woke up, she was alone in the bed. The day she had circled on her calendar was finally here. This graduation was different than her Masters and bachelor degree. She slipped from the bed carefully, padded barefoot to the kitchenette, and found Emily already pouring three mugs. Sarah stood at the counter in an oversized T-shirt, twisting her hair into a messy bun while scrolling through her phone. “Morning, Doctor-to-be,” Emily said, handing Cassie a mug. The coffee was strong, sweetened just right—no bitterness left behind. Cassie took a sip and closed her eyes for a second, savoring it. “Good morning fellow doctors. It still feels surreal,” she admitted. Sarah looked up. “We’ve earned surreal. Two years of hell, endless revisions, that one advisor who hated commas. You’re allowed to feel like a legend today.” Cassie laughed shakily. “I’m going to cry the second they call my name. Like, full-on, can’t-breathe ugly crying. Everyone’s going to see.” Emily set her

  • Whispers of Submission    Shopping

Cassie woke to the soft chime of her phone alarm and the faint scent of coffee already brewing downstairs. The hotel suite felt alive with the kind of chaos only Emily and Sarah could create before noon. She stretched and smiled at the ceiling, and let herself feel the small, bright bubble of anticipation in her chest. Today was for them. There were no deadlines, no worries, it was just the three of them and an entire city waiting for them to jump into. Emily poked her head around the doorframe, hair in a messy topknot, already wearing the oversized hoodie she had stolen from Sarah’s suitcase. “Rise and shine, Doctor-to-be. We are going shopping. I bet Reggie’s black card is burning a hole in your purse. And, baby, we are going to splurge." Cassie groaned and pulled the covers over her head. “I still can’t believe he made me take it. He literally tucked it inside my wallet while I was brushing my teeth. That man is committed to spoiling me.”"Then use it," Emily urged. Cassie sat u

  • Whispers of Submission    Traveling

Cassie woke to the soft gray light of early spring filtering through the bedroom curtains. The days before graduation had blurred into a quiet frenzy of packing, last-minute emails, and restless nights where excitement and nerves tangled in her chest until she could barely breathe. She had worked so hard for this PhD years of late nights, endless revisions, tears over rejected drafts, and moments when she thought she might never finish. Now the finish line was here, and the happiness felt almost too big to hold. She rolled over and found Reggie already awake, propped on one elbow, watching her with that steady, patient look he wore when he knew she was spiraling. “Morning, Doctor-to-be,” he murmured. She smiled, still half-asleep. “Don’t jinx it.” He leaned down and kissed her slowly, hand cupping her cheek. “No jinx. Just truth. You did this. You’re going to walk across that stage and the whole room is going to know what I already know.” Her throat tightened. She kissed him

  • Whispers of Submission    Good news

Cassie woke to sunlight streaming through the bedroom blinds. Reggie was still asleep beside her, one arm flung across her waist, face half-buried in the pillow. She watched him for a moment; the steady rise and fall of his chest, the faint scar on his eyebrow from some long-ago fight Asher refused to talk about and felt a quiet happiness settle in her bones. She slipped from bed carefully, padded barefoot to the kitchen, and started coffee. The apartment smelled like cedar and last night’s takeout containers still on the counter. Her phone buzzed on the island while the machine gurgled. An email from the university.Subject: Final Reminder... • Whispers of Submission    Open hearts

Cassie woke most mornings to the soft clink of Reggie in the kitchen, the smell of coffee drifting under the bedroom door like a promise. The weeks after her internship ended carried a gentle rhythm she had never known before. There were no deadlines pressing at her temples, no hospital beeps echoing in her ears, only the slow, deliberate unfolding of days shared with someone who chose her every single time.Their dates were small and deliberate, carved out of ordinary evenings like treasures. One Tuesday he took her to a narrow Italian place hidden behind a dry cleaner’s, the kind of spot that didn’t advertise. It smelled like garlic and fresh basil the moment they stepped inside. They squeezed into a corner table barely big enough for two plates, sharing gnocchi in brown butter and a bottle of wine between them. The rain tapped the single window beside their booth. Reggie told her stories about his first apartment in college; a shoebox with a mattress on the floor and a ceiling that

  • Whispers of Submission    A lazy day

Cassie woke to the soft gray light filtering through the windows, the lake beyond a flat silver mirror under low clouds. The sectional was wide enough for both of them; Reggie’s arm still curved around her waist, his breath slow and even against her shoulder. No nightmares had returned after the fi

  • Whispers of Submission    A distress call

Cassie woke to the soft patter of snow against the windows and the warmth of Reggie’s arm draped across her waist. Reggie pulled Cassie closer until her thigh pressed flush against his. The booth’s velvet curtain shielded them from most prying eyes, though faint silhouettes moved beyond the heavy fabric, and the distant crack of leather on skin still carried through the air like a heartbeat. He leaned in, lips

  • Whispers of Submission    What a killjoy!

Cassie’s body still thrummed with unfinished heat, a low, insistent ache that had only sharpened after Reggie’s mouth left her trembling. She shifted against the leather, thighs pressing together, trying to ease the emptiness. Watching the platform had only made it worse. She needed more: Wanted hi
