“Aurora! Oh my God! What are you doing here?”

“What am I doing here? I live here! What are you doing here?”

“You’re his son’s sister, aren’t you?”

“If you are talking about Phil and I’m assuming you are since you are walking barefoot down the hallway and didn’t spend the night with me, then yes! I am his son’s sister.”

“Oh, sorry. He mentioned his son having an older sister that also lived with him but he never really mentioned how old you were but then again, I just realized I didn’t ask. When he said his son was four, I just assumed you would be like ten!”

“You never answered my question! What are you doing sneaking through the house in the wee hours of the morning?”

She looked down and shuffled her feet, unable to look me in the eye when Phil suddenly came down the hall, wearing just his jeans.

“What does it look like, Aurora? She spent the night with me.” He came up behind her and wrapped his arms around her in an intimate embrace.

I know I had to have a look of surprise on my face

  • Whispers of the Heart   A Mutual Understanding

"I look like her but that’s where the comparisons stop so you were never gonna have a second chance with Janet by being with me. I’m not Janet and I never will be.”He looked at me with a passive expression, those stone cold eyes that I couldn’t quite read. I said what I had to say and I couldn’t tell if it made him mad or not. Not that it should matter to me but I was trying to be diplomatic here and at the very least, friendly. Because of that, I didn’t need to try to constantly smash heads with him. When he finally spoke, he began to slap his hands together just before he did.“Now, you get it. You finally admit it! I’m proud of you! This is a pivotal moment for you, Aurora! You hate her for what she did to you and like you said, you were spared from the very worst. Now, you know exactly how I feel about my mother. I buried all that hate for the longest time. I dreamed a million times what would happen when I finally found out she was dead. The relief I would feel, how happy it wou

  • Whispers of the Heart   Comparisons

I couldn’t help the gasp that escaped as he told me the last part. I quickly covered my mouth with my hands as my eyes filled with tears, feeling so sorry for that girl and that whole situation. She had really loved him and wanted to be with him but her dad thought he knew what was best for her with keeping them apart and ultimately, they all lost. Well, everyone except Phil, it seems. He got what he wanted from her, never cared for her to begin with and then took a bribe from her father and walked away with cash in hand, his ultimate ‘screw you’ to all of them.I realized as he was telling me this last part and how victorious he looked through all of it, how proud of himself he seemed, that I really did not know Phillip Clark at all. Never would I have ever imagined that this would have been his childhood. He always seemed so put together, so normal almost to the point of boring, even. There were still gaps missing that I needed to know about so I let him continue. As if he could rea

  • Whispers of the Heart   Revelations

**TRIGGER WARNING FOR MULTIPLE KINDS OF ABUSE, SUICIDE AND DEVIANT BEHAVIOR. Please skip this chapter if any of this will trigger you and just imagine that Phil had a traumatizing childhood followed by a turbulent adolescence that ended with a tragic situation with someone close to him. I rarely give these due to the fact that if you are reading this book, just based on the synopsis, you already know there is some dark siuations in it but I want this chapter to be warned as it is fairly dire and could be very hard for some to read.**Looking at him, he looks tired and messy. Definitely not the handsome, put together Phil I have always known. The security light creates shadows but I can still make out the faint scratches on his cheek that haven’t completely healed and remnants of a black eye underneath the visible bags. All tell-tale signs of someone who has not had a pleasant week but I can’t feel sorry for him. He did this to himself.“I’m sorry about your mom.” I start, trying to br

  • Whispers of the Heart   Evening Snacks and Preparations

As I scurried down the hall and into the kitchen, I couldn’t help but stop and open the freezer door, leaning in and letting the air cold air surround me. Only after I felt my temperature had returned to normal did I close the door. I about jumped out of my skin as I turned around and Nate was standing just a couple feet from me, watching me closely with a puzzled look on his face.“Whatcha doin’, Rory?” He asked as he crossed his arms.“Oh, nothing. Just got a little too hot and needed to cool off a minute. What are you doing, buddy?”“Can I have a snack?”He probably was a little hungry after running and playing the way he had at the playground. The only problem was that we hadn’t really ate here yet without Barb and John here with us so I wasn’t even sure what they might have in the house.“Yeah, let’s look and see what we might have.”I opened the refrigerator and freezer and then the cabinets, offering options of things I saw he might eat. He hadn’t jumped at any of the options I

Owen scrunched his face, as he continued. “I think Coach Evans just wishes she’d find a new job. I think he hates what she does and I can’t say that I blame him.”“What does she do?”He looked back at Nate before looking at me again. “Uhm, she works at ‘Solstice’.”My eyes bulged wide in shock and surprise. “You mean the strip club?” I hissed in a whisper then quickly looked back to make sure Nate hadn’t heard me. I was so shocked that I completely forgot discretion for a second.“Yeah, I know it caused them some problems on the start and I think he still gets some backlash from the School Board and Board of Education but there’s nothing they can do. He is a professional that doesn’t let his personal life affect his job. She has never did or said anything out of the way. Hell, none of them would even know it if they didn’t go to the club themselves.”“So, is she like a dancer or…”“Yeah, she is. From what I have heard though, she is very professional and has high expectations of herse

  • Whispers of the Heart   Conversations

“Nate, buddy. Ready to talk to your daddy and see if he’s almost home?”“Yeah!” He answered, excitedly.I grabbed my cell phone. “I’m gonna put it on speaker phone but you talk to him and see where he is and what time he thinks he will be home. I’ll talk to him if he needs me to, okay?”“Okay.”I hit the number and then the speaker phone and handed the phone back to Nate.Phil picked up after the second ring.“Hi, Daddy.”“Nate! Hey buddy! What are you doing?” He sounded normal but he always did when he was talking to Nate.“Nothing. Sitting here with Rory. Are you almost home?”“No, Little Man. I am still a few hours away. You will probably be in bed by the time I get home so I won’t be able to see you until tomorrow.”I felt a wave of relief wash over me hearing him say that. Regardless of when he actually got here, at least I could have one more night to just get Nate ready for bed normally and not have to worry about him being thrust in the middle of this, especially if the conver

  • Whispers of the Heart   Small World

My grin at her question must have said it all. I felt my face flush but in the best way possible.“Shew, that good, huh?” She answered with a mischievous chuckle and a playful slap to my arm. “Let me tell you, girl! That is one fine young man you have there yourself! Shew! Those dark eyes and those dimples! If I was a few years younger, you’d have yourself some competition!”I couldn’t help but laugh along with her. “Thanks. He has been the model boyfriend so far but we have only been together a week so we are taking things slow. How old are you, Melanie?” I asked her, curious since she thought I was older than I am.“Twenty-four so an old woman compared to you, darling. In all seriousness though, I am happy with my man and you keep yours. I just happen to see him often enough around Derek.”“Derek? Is that your man?”“Yeah, you probably know him. Actually, I am almost certain you do since you are dating Owen Marshall. Derek Evans, the assistant football coach.”“You’re dating Coach E

  • Whispers of the Heart   A Chance Encounter

I met back up with Owen for just a few minutes after the bell rang. I hadn’t expected to see him but he was waiting inside the truck, using the keyless entry to gain access since I had his key fob. He said he just couldn’t let me leave without seeing me for just a second. He gave me a few kisses before hopping back out and running back toward the football field.I shifted over to the driver’s seat, nervous to drive his vehicle for the first time. I took a deep breath and put my seat belt on. I did as I had watched Owen do and hit the start button after applying my foot to the brake. The screen flashed a bunch of messages about my connection and failure to pair Bluetooth device and all of that but I ignored it. My phone wasn’t fancy enough for all of that and this big hunk of metal would just have to pine away for it’s owner until he was back in the driver’s seat again.I had learned to drive in a big Dodge truck so this wasn’t too much bigger than driving that. The height up off of th

  • Whispers of the Heart   Watching the Clock

I styled my hair wet and messy, scrunching it with mousse and then grabbing my oatmeal color ball cap to throw on if I needed it later to tame flyaways or just to get my hair out of my face. I put the charm bracelet that Owen had gifted me last night on and loved the happy accident that it matched the necklace I had already chosen to wear with the outfit.Glancing at the clock, we still had over thirty minutes since Phil had woke Nate up so early. I helped Nate put his socks and shoes on and then we both brushed our teeth before I let him go back to cartoons while I worked on neglected homework from yesterday. I left Barb a note on the table, letting her know that I had spoken with Phil and that he should be back tonight but it might be well after dark before he gets here so Nate will be with me one more night.I received my morning text from Owen, letting me know that he was on his way. I switched off the television, threw my cell phone in my back pocket and grabbed our backpacks as
