“I am alive.”

The words left Ruby’s lips in a breathless whisper, her eyes wide with disbelief as she sat up in bed. Her fingers trembled slightly as she touched her face, her throat, her arms....everything was intact.

She had been certain she would die.

Her mind reeled, replaying the last thing she remembered—collapsing to the floor, gasping for air, foaming at the mouth. She had accepted death in that moment, had welcomed it even.

Yet, here she was.

She exhaled sharply, looking around. Hector’s bedroom. Again.

The realization sent a shiver down her spine.

She sighed, rubbing her temples. What she had done had been reckless.

But it had also been necessary.

She had gambled her own life, and for what? A chance. A mere possibility that she might get closer to her goal.

If she had died, then so be it—her fate had been sealed anyway.

But she had survived.

And that meant something.

She knew Hector well enough to know that if he had truly wanted her dead, he would

  • Will You Marry Me?   Chapter Twenty Seven

The man walked past Maya, seemingly not interested in her. From the corner of her eye, she saw the man and two more men dragging Carlos toward one of the four looming buildings. They headed for the last one—dark, silent, ominous. No one said a word to her. They all walked away, leaving her in the middle of nowhere. Her heart thudded against her ribcage. She stared at the unfamiliar buildings, trying to calm her breath, unsure of what to do or where to go. Then another man approached...this one older, lean, with a cold smirk playing at the edge of his lips. “Come. Nico’s waiting.” She followed him without protest, her stomach in knots. Every step deeper into the house felt like a descent into something she might never climb out of. The door opened, and they walked into a wide, dimly lit hall. Armed men stood along the walls, machine guns hanging casually from their shoulders like they were part of the decor. Maya tried not to look any of them in the eye. In the center

  • Will You Marry Me?   Chapter Twenty Six

After Maya sent the message to Nico, she returned to the bedroom and sat on the edge of the bed. Her heart wouldn’t stop racing. Her hands were clammy, her chest rising and falling too fast. Minutes passed. Then her phone rang. She snatched it up and answered. Nico's voice came through, low and direct. "Everything’s set. Coordinates are secure. You have one hour." Maya's voice shook, but she steadied it. “I’ll be there in an hour.” She hung up. Without wasting a second, she stripped off her clothes and rushed into the bathroom. Her fingers fumbled with the soap. As warm water ran down her skin, she scrubbed herself harder than necessary—like washing off the fear before it settled. She dried quickly, returned to the room, and began dressing. A long black dress and black sneakers. She tied her hair in a bun. No jewelry, nothing that could slow her down. Carlod stirred. “Maya?” His voice was groggy. “Where are you going?” She turned, forcing a smile onto her face. “I

  • Will You Marry Me?   Chapter Twenty Five

The air between them was charged the moment Maya wrapped her arms around Carlos. He stood still, a towel slung low around his hips, his skin still damp from the shower, his heartbeat suddenly louder in his ears. He gently peeled her arms away, his brow creasing. "Maya..." Her eyes were soft but certain. "Don’t say no this time. Please. I know what I’m asking. I want this. I want you." Carlos took a breath, and bit his lips. "You’ve been through so much. Maybe this isn’t the right time. You’re vulnerable, scared. You’re trying to find something to hold onto." Maya shook her head. "I’m not doing this because I’m afraid. I’m doing this because I’ve never been more sure. I can’t pretend anymore. I want you to be my first. I want it to be you." Carlos studied her face. She didn’t flinch. Her breathing was calm, but her cheeks were flushed, her eyes glistening with something more than fear. There was need in her expression. Desire too. Still, he hesitated. Until she leaned up an

  • Will You Marry Me?   Chapter Twenty Four

Maya slumped onto the edge of the bed. Her hands were now trembling. The weight of everything pressed down on her shoulders like cement blocks. She folded her arms tightly around herself, rocking back and forth slowly, the silence of the safe house suddenly deafening. Star’s voice kept echoing in her mind... 'Maya… he’s going to kill me. He has a gun.' It looped again. And again. And again. She curled up on the bed, drawing her knees to her chest, eyes burning from crying, but sleep wouldn’t come. She kept glancing at the phone, hoping it would ring but it didn't. When she eventually fell asleep, it was already morning. The sound of her phone ringing, woke her up in the afternoon. She sat up quickly and answered, trying to steady her voice. “Carlos?” He sounded tired. “Hey… how are you holding up?” Maya swallowed hard. “Barely. How was the proposal? Is your brother happy?” There was a pause. Then Carlos said, “It went bad. Real bad.” Maya’s heart sank. “What do

  • Will You Marry Me?   Chapter Twenty Three

Maya’s breath caught in her throat. “Nico? He’s here?” She glanced around the street like the shadows might suddenly lunge at her. “Is he watching me right now? What if Carlos is in danger?” Her hands trembled as she looked down. She quickly clenched the piece of paper tighter in her fist, folding it into her palm as if she could squeeze the fear out of her veins. Then she saw Carlos walking toward the car. Her entire body tensed. She forced herself to breathe. He slid into the driver’s seat, eyes flicking to her with his usual calm. He didn’t ask questions. Just turned the key and started driving. They said nothing on the ride. The safe house sat far from the city center, tucked behind steel gates and thick trees. The perimeter was lined with concrete walls, twice as high as a man, reinforced with steel rods buried deep. Barbed wire crowned the top like a spiked halo. Security cameras blinked silently at the corners, tracking every inch of movement. Carlos drove strai

  • Will You Marry Me?   Chapter Twenty Two

Maya’s hands trembled as she gripped the collar of Carlos' shirt, her voice low and cracked with despair. “Carlos… she wasn’t there. Star wasn’t there. I searched everywhere. My sister… I failed her.....” Carlos made her sit, and knelt beside her, his eyes soft, voice even softer. He wrapped an arm around her, gently stroking her back. “I know,” he whispered. “I’m so sorry, Maya. But listen to me...I’ll find her. I promise you, I won’t stop until we bring her home.” She pulled away just enough to look at him, eyes swollen with tears. “Nico Vargas. He’s the one who has her.” Carlos’s expression changed. Maya noticed. “You know him?” He gave a slow nod. “Yeah. I know him. He's extremely dangerous." Something passed between them, unspoken, tense. She wiped her cheeks, her voice suddenly hollow. “Then I don’t care anymore.” Carlos frowned. “What do you mean?” “I mean… I don’t care what happens to me.” Her voice had no fear, just fire. “If I die doing this, so be it.
