LOGINAyla’s POV
“I’m sorry… I-I shouldn’t be here.”
I swivel on my heels, intending to flee, but a large hand clamps around my wrist, bringing me to a halt mid-step.
Alpha Kael pulls me closer, my body slamming into his solid, rock-hard frame.
Heat surges through me and my wolf purrs and stirs within me, releasing a sharp wave of desire rushing all through my body.
No, not now. I plead silently to the wolf within me. That’s when it hits me. The pull I’ve been feeling, that irresistible tug in my chest and gut—it’s coming from him. Alpha Kael.
“I know you feel it too,” he murmurs, his deep voice vibrating through my core. One hand presses against my waist, keeping me tethered to him, while the other grazes my temple in a gesture that feels tender and possessive.
Tender? Why would I think this man is tender? There’s nothing tender about him.
If he thinks I’m going to surrender to this bond, he’s absolutely mistaken. I would never—ever—be with a man like him.
“I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
I deny the existence of the magnetic force between us even when my pulse is hammering and my heart is beating so fast—betraying my lies.
Kael doesn’t argue. He only smiles, a slow, knowing smile before releasing me from his grasp.
“The goddess must be testing me right now,”
he says under his breath, his tone laced with amusement.
Before I can respond, he turns, strides to the edge of the pool, and dives in. The splash wets me instantly leaving my clothes glued to my body and revealing my underwear.
Kael turns and this time, his eyes doesn’t meet mine but they roam my body hungrily—but all I could focus on is how his toned muscles glistened under the bright moon.
He takes one more glance at me, and I swear I see a coy smile form on his lips.
goddess, please… this is a mistake. He possibly can’t be my mate.
Since I’ve stepped foot into this territory, it’s been hell for me, and now this—
“Undressing me with your eyes is rude,” Kael calls out lazily, snapping me out of my reverie.
“Likewise.” I drawled, rolling my eyes at him before stepping out hurriedly. goddess knows what will happen if I stay here one minute longer.
Kael’s POV
“I never knew you to be the shy type—Riian. If you want her, talk to her.” My voice is flat and void of any emotion as I speak.
Riian’s jaw tenses.
“But Alpha, she’s a Sayer… it’s forbidden,” he says.
There it is again. The ancient law that has kept wolves and Sayers apart for centuries.
I should agree with him and remind him of the consequences of what is going to happen if he ever crosses that line.
“Forbidden doesn’t mean you stop wanting something.”
I don’t know where the words came from. But I say it.
The look Riian gives me is sharp and confusing, like he’s wondering why the leader of a wolf pack would utter such a statement.
If only he knew the dilemma the goddess put around me.
My mind drifts to Ayla for a moment. The way she trained alone this morning, her eyes burned with something unlike what I’ve seen.
I held myself back last night at the pool—barely. I know it’s just the mate bond that’s making me feel this way. But—she’s so different.
Other mates I’ve had accepted the bond in less than a day—but her, she hasn’t accepted it, and it’s eating me alive. I keep trying so hard, every second and minute I spend with her around, to hold in the urge to feel her skin against mine—but she’s not for me.
“Kael.”
“Kael.”
Elder Moren’s voice snaps me back.
He approaches me slowly, leaning heavily on his worn walking stick.
Elder Moren never leaves his abode unless something was very wrong. Riian understands this and excuses us both.
He settles on the bench beside me and pats the empty space, urging me to sit.
“The new girl—She’s dangerous, and I see calamity tied around her but…”
I already know Ayla is dangerous, but calamity… that’s a new one.
“I’m listening, Elder,” I say, straightening.
“There’s a solution. You must sever the bond between you.”
I should have done it already. But every time I imagine cutting that bond, something clenches painfully in my chest. There’s something else about her I can’t explain yet… something I need to understand.
“She’s my mate, Elder. I can’t sever a bond without hurting her.”
I’m surprised by my own hypocrisy. A week ago, I considered sacrificing her to break my curse. Now I’m hesitating to even harm her.
“She’s a Sayer, Kael!” Elder Moren snaps.
“It is forbidden! A wolf and a Sayer can never be together!”
I’ve never seen him this angry.
I need answers.
Ayla summoned the Messenger.
She’s not just any Sayer.
“If it’s so forbidden, then why did the goddess bind us?” I counter.
Elder Moren sighs before his tone softens.
“She tests all leaders. Strength alone doesn’t make a king, Kael. Wisdom. Restraint. Obedience to ancient law—those matter too.” He fixes me with a grave look.
“You cannot bond with that girl. She will bring calamity upon you and the pack.”
My jaw tightens.
“I’ll do what I must. But I’m still the Alpha. My word is final.”
“I’m not bonding with her,” I continue. “I only need her blood to break the curse. After that… I’ll send her away.”
But as soon as the words leave my mouth—
I smell her.
Ayla.
Her scent spikes… then disappears instantly.
She heard us.
Shit.
She wasn’t supposed to hear that, but I force myself to act like nothing happened.
“Kael, sending her away won’t solve anything,” Elder Moren says coldly. “You must end her. Sayers were never meant for this world.”
The words hit harder than I expect.
End her?
My mate?
For the first time in years, I feel a real connection to someone even though it’s not a connection I want but can’t help it. The ancient laws say she has to die.
Kael’s POVMoren stands up, the old fucker is not going to rest until Ayla is out of this pack. He passes me a knowing look before bowing.“We’re sorry for this sudden meeting, Alpha. Firstly, we want to thank you for your leadership in this pack.”The rest of the elders chorused and bowed. I stayed silent, watching them. They only use that tone when they’re about to ask for a head on a silver platter.“As for today’s meeting, it’s regarding the warrior trial.” He glances at some others and some gave him curt nods. Then he continued. “But beyond the trials, the safety of this pack is at stake. There are rumors spreading to other wolf territories that we are harboring a witch. They say a dark presence is living among us, and it’s making the neighboring packs and we in this pack restless.”I leaned back, my hands clenching the armrests. I knew exactly where this was going. They didn't mention Ayla’s name, but they didn’t have to. Every eye in the room was practically screaming it.“We s
Ayla’s POV.The sun hadn’t even fully cleared the horizon when we woke up, but the heat was already starting to crawl under my skin. My head was spinning from hunger, and my mouth felt like it was full of dry sand. I looked over at Lydia. She looked terrible. Her eyes were sunken, and she was shivering even though the air was humid. We were exhausted, our bodies burning through energy we didn't have, but we couldn't stay in that cave anymore. If we weren’t bound to a pack under protection, just roaming these place, we’d have been long gone. “Water,” Lydia croaked, her voice barely a whisper. “Ayla, if we don't find water soon, I don’t know what’ll happen to me”I nodded, trying to steady my breathing. “I know. I remember the map I saw back at the pack. There’s a stream not too far from here. It wasn’t the main river, but it’s our best shot.”I closed my eyes for a second, picturing the lines and markings from the map I had studied. I had memorized the layout of this sector, and I kn
Kael’s POV.“The hunt has begun.” Riian’s voice cut through the fog of my mind via the alpha-beta link.I didn’t reply. I couldn’t. I just paced the length of the warrior’s inner chambers, my boots clicking rhythmically against the stone floor. Every few seconds, I run my hands through my hair, gripping the strands until my scalp stung. The silence of the room was deafening, I stared at the map now sitting on my desk— the map I had refused to give her.Maybe I should have just let her have it, a small, traitorous part of me whispered.“You keep treating her like shit,” Agnar growled, his voice a low, vibrating rumble in the back of my skull. My wolf wasn't happy. He hadn't been happy since I pushed her away this morning. She needs to learn, I snapped back, though the conviction in my mental voice was wavering. If she’s going to survive outside these walls—ever—she has to go in blind. The world doesn't give you a guide, Agnar. “The council elders want a meeting with you. Do I approve?
Ayla’s POV.The moment the heavy iron gates slammed shut behind us, most recruits shifted and disappeared into the jungle. It was then it fully hit me that it had begun. The sudden mountain chill hit us hard, the cold air flushing our skin, Lydia’s ears and cheeks crimsoned almost immediately. It was survival of the fittest. “We shouldn’t shift yet,” I told her. “Let’s save our strength.”We pushed into the thick jungle on foot. Every few yards, I carved an ‘X’ into the bark of the trees so we wouldn't lose our way in the dense overgrowth.Suddenly, Lydia stopped. She sniffed the air, her expression sharpening. “I smell something.” She whispers, licking her lips. We crept forward, careful not to snap a single dry twig. Through the ferns, I spotted a large grey hare grazing. Lydia didn't wait. She lunged, shifting mid-air into her wolf form. She missed the hare by an inch, and the animal took off on its long hind legs. Lydia’s wolf immediately chased after it, disappearing into the
Ayla’s POV.“And what will you do if I don’t?” Jax smirked, leaning into my space. I took a deep breath, relaxing my already raging wolf.“You think we’re scared of you?” He tutted, looking back at his friends for approval. “Or your big ass weakling of a wolf.” I snarled, my wolf was begging me to shift. Then it clicked, if I ran out of stamina now, I wouldn’t survive day one in the forest. Calm down maya, it’s just rage-bait.“Please,” I pleaded, lowering my ego even though my wolf wasn’t having it. “Let me pass.”“Never knew she could beg.” One of the guys behind Jax let out a dry chuckle, sending them all into a mocking fit of laughter.“You shouldn’t be here Ayla,” Jax scoffed, his amusement fading. “you’re not even a warrior yet and you’ve started throwing away your luck.” “I left something inside during my cleaning shift.” I lied.“Well, you can pick it up in three days” His eyes darkened. “Assuming you make it out alive.” I didn't flinch. Instead, I folded my arms, matching
Ayla’s POV.“Hell yeah,” Maya muttered, her voice a low vibration in my mind. “I bet they didn’t see that coming.” I could practically feel her tail wagging in victory. We gathered in a tight circle around the trainers. Kael stood at the center, his presence heavy and demanding as usual. As the trainers moved through the crowd to inspect the newly shifted wolves, the atmosphere turned from adrenaline to pure shock. When they reached me, their eyes widened and pupils dilated. I was massive. Even among the warrior class wolves, I knew my size would rival most. I flashed back to a core memory of my father shifting when I was still little, he had looked like a prehistoric beast compared to the others. Now, looking at my own paws, I realized I hadn’t just inherited his strength… I’d inherited his size.“We’ve hidden three sacred items around the mountain,” Kael’s voice cut through the awe, gravelly and cold. “You’ll hunt for survival while searching. It lasts three days, and you'll be pai
Ayla’s POV.It’s been two days, forty-eight hours of trying, failing, trying again. And still… nothing.I was stuck. I slide my palm against the bathroom mirror, wiping the fog that blurred my reflection. The girl staring back at me looked… breakable, tired, and pathetic. Was this really me? I was
Kael’s POV“Why isn’t she healing?” I asked, my voice sharper than I intended.Kiara didn’t look up from where her hands hovered over Ayla’s chest, sweat beaded at her temples.“She’s blocking me,” she said through clenched teeth. “I’m trying here Kael.”“Then try harder!” Her head snapped up, eye
Ayla’s POVAll I could think about was him—my mate. Every rational thought, every attempt to control my wolf fell apart when he was near. My mind screamed for restraint, but my body had its own urgent need. I tried so hard to keep it in, but my restraint exploded the moment he got near me.Earlier
Kael’s POV. “Thank you for the words of wisdom, Elder. I’ll see you soon,” I murmured before rising to my feet. No one disobeyed the Elders. Their words had shaped the pack for generations. Even previous Alphas of this pack never defied them. Yet today, an elder’s words felt like chains tightene
