Chapter 1

"We're truly sorry. You and Melody Foster both have a rare blood type, and your names and your mothers' names are so similar that the records were mixed up when your birth files were created. They still haven't been corrected. Would you mind letting your family know?"

I hung up the phone. My adoptive parents were sitting across from me, staring at my medical report with grim expressions.

"So, um..."

I barely got a word out before my adoptive father, Brent Fowler, slammed his fist on the table. "What? You want my daughter to give you a kidney?"

The words died in my throat. Part of me wanted to test how much I actually mattered to them. After all, I'd been their daughter for 18 years.

"The doctor said donating one kidney won't affect life expectancy. The donor can still live a perfectly healthy life afterward."

My adoptive mother, Karen Bradford, was so furious she started crying. "How can you be this selfish? Why should my daughter trade her health for your life? 18 years raising someone else's kid, and all we got is a parasite. What did I do to deserve this?"

The words hit me like a slap. I swallowed my hurt and kept going. "But I'll die."

Brent scoffed. "Then die. You're not ours anyway. Rotten to the core, just like I always said. If Melody had kidney failure, she would never stoop so low as to beg someone for a kidney!"

Karen hurried off and came back with a pen and paper. She scrawled "Organ Donation Waiver" across the top.

"You're not getting a kidney. Go beg your real parents for money. You've been leeching off us for over a decade. If you had any shame, you'd jump off a building. At least that way you'd have repaid us for raising you."

Brent picked up the phone and called his lawyer friend right then and there. "This agreement is too sloppy. What if she finds a loophole? We raised this little wretch for 18 years. You think we don't know what she's like? If we don't lock this down, she'll come after us for more."

I stared at the agreement, my nails digging into my palms. But I understood. They were only my adoptive parents, after all.

So, what would my real parents do?

With that thought, I headed to my biological parents' house.

Their faces were ashen, their lips drained of color. Every one of them stared at the floor, and not a single person could meet my eyes. The viewer count hit 500,000. Comments flooded the screen so fast they blurred together. The same people who had been tearing me apart moments ago had completely changed their tune."I can't believe how biased this family is! Most parents favor their biological kid, sure, but these people made their own biological daughter suffer for their adopted one?""What a bunch of hypocrites. If you're so tough, don't come crawling back to Mel for help!""Karma is real. Bad people always get what's coming to them!"Mom stood in front of the camera, tears streaming down her face, repeating the same words over and over. "I'm sorry, Melanie. I'm so sorry. I just—"I'd heard it all before, so many times the words had lost all meaning. I'd spent my whole childhood hoping for something that never came, and somewhere along the way, I'd stopped needing it.

Their faces went white, and they stammered over each other. "We don't know what that is. Stop trying to change the subject."I didn't press them. I just pulled up a video. "That's fine if you don't remember. We had the whole thing notarized on video, after all. Since there are so many people watching today, let's show everyone."I addressed the audience. "Six months ago, Melody and I both went in for medical exams. Melody's results came back clean, but mine showed kidney failure. "Later, the hospital realized they'd mixed up our records because our information was so similar. That's how all of this started."The notarized video played on screen, along with every line of the contract, right there for the entire audience to see. It showed how they'd kicked me back and forth between families like a piece of trash, how I was forbidden from making any claim on Melody's kidney, and how my treatment costs were capped at 100,000 dollars."Moms, we have signed that contract. No matter

I couldn't blame myself for not recognizing her. Melody had grown up bathed in love and money, the prettiest girl in school every single year. She was a trained dancer on top of that, with a poise most people could only dream of.But the young woman on my screen now was sallow-skinned and skeletal, practically a corpse. There was nothing left of the confident, radiant person she used to be."Melanie, you're more tanned than before, and you look so much healthier. We couldn't be more different now." She kept talking. The comments section was filled with confusion."Is that the host's friend? That's so sad.""She's a big-time creator now. A single sponsorship is worth tens of thousands. Maybe she should help her out?""And she owes her because? Come on."Neither of us spoke for a long moment. I had a pretty good idea of what she was trying to do. But if I cut the call now, people would spin it into something ugly. I'd worked too hard building this channel to let it fall

"Yeah." I kept my voice flat. I'd known this day would come sooner or later.Karen faltered, then her tone turned sharp. "What do you mean, 'yeah'? Did you know all along that Melody was the one who was sick and not you?"I didn't deny it. "Yeah. I've known for a while."Karen lost it immediately. "Then why didn't you tell us? You did this on purpose, didn't you?"I answered calmly. "That's a family matter. I'm not part of your family, so why would I tell you?"There had been countless nights over the past six months when I'd woken up in tears. But half a year on the road had toughened me up and given me perspective. I could say things like that now without flinching.Karen choked on her own words and couldn't respond. I let the silence sit for a moment. "Is there anything else? I have a bus to catch."Then I hung up.Six hours later, I got off and turned my phone back on. The screen was flooded with missed calls and messages. I called Mom back first."Melanie, what took y

Brent let out a cold laugh. "What would we ever need you for? My daughter inherited my genes. She's perfectly healthy."Karen sneered from the side. "She's probably cursing us, hoping we all drop dead like her. Spiteful little creature."Melody picked up a pen and added a line to the contract herself. "It's fine, let her add it. Mom and Dad always said they'd treat us fairly, right?"I just hope that from now on, if you need something, you come to me, not Mom and Dad. They're not obligated to pay for your treatment."She handed the contract back to me. The dense lines of text blurred together, and I couldn't take in a single word. All I could see was the word, "Waiver."I let out a bitter laugh and signed my name under the weight of everyone's stares. The notary recorded a video for the record, and I heard the entire room exhale.Mom, who hadn't said a word the whole time, walked over and spoke gently. "Don't worry, Melanie. I'll always be here for you. It's late. Get some sl

I dragged my aching body down the street. Tears ran into the cuts on my face, and the sting made me shake all over. But I had nowhere to go. I didn't have any money on me, so I found a park bench and sat there the entire night. At 3:00 am, Karen called. "Get home now. We need to talk about your situation."A spark of hope flared in my chest. Had they changed their minds? If they were willing to help, then I'd tell them the truth and donate my kidney to Melody. And maybe, if I did that, I'd finally have what Melody had always had. Two families that loved me.I half-ran the whole way back. When I walked through the door, everyone was there, both sets of parents, along with a notary. Before I could say a word, Karen shoved a contract into my hands. "We had a lawyer draw this up. Sign it."The terms were laid out clearly. I would make no claim to any of Melody's organs. I would forfeit my right to any inheritance. My treatment costs would be split, with the Fowlers coverin
