CHAPTER 3

Five Years Later.

It's been exactly five years since I walked out of my family home and flew down to Italy with a man I barely knew and a child I knew wasn't his. But look how time flies! It's been five years now, and I can't believe that I'm back in New York with my son, Jaden.

Five years ago, I didn't just leave home,I left my hometown entirely and everything it had given me over the years. Now, I was going back—not because I had any desire to confront my past or to see my ex-fiancé or my father, but because it was time to chase my dreams, and I also wanted to show Jaden my family when the time is due.He deserves something real, especially since his whole existence has been a lie regarding who he thinks is his father.

“Mommy, !” I push the cart around the mall as I watch my four-year-old son cheer me on. I just smile and caress his head as we continue while he squeals in delight.

“Okay, Jaden, we are done here for today,” I said, and he kicked and wiggled as I pushed my cart to the counter to pay for my goods. Jaden keeps looking around in search of his friends, most of whom he calls “Uncle.” About four men are with us inside the mall, stationed at different corners to protect me and Jaden.

I left home five years ago. Five years ago, I ran away from home and got into an accident that almost took my life, but he saved me that night. His name is Alessandro, and he is the devil himself. Well, not just the devil he is my husband now, and I have learned to live with him since he saved me. We now have a child together.

I ran away after my father never believed in me, and my sister betrayed me. And for the stranger that slept with me that night? I didn't even get his name or know what he looked like. But each time I stay with Alessandro, I have this tiring thought that Jaden is not his child. Less than twenty-four hours after I slept with him, the doctor checked and announced that I was pregnant and Alessandro quickly claimed it.

A baby couldn't have formed in less than twenty-four hours, right?

But either way, I didn't push it. Once he claimed Jaden as his child, we entered into a contract marriage. I never got to tell him about my fears regarding Jaden not being his, especially since the stranger had disappeared into thin air. I couldn't risk my parents and my sister finding out that I was pregnant; the shame and embarrassment would have swallowed me.

But in just five years, a lot of things have changed. I now move around with an entourage of armed and intimidating men. When I was coming back to New York, Alessandro didn't really agree and proposed sending me some men to always protect me. Well, I declined. I wasn't a kid, and this is my hometown. As I paid for my goods, I couldn't wait to get to the house he bought us so I could unpack and send these men back to Italy. I hate seeing them around, even if I know they mean well. I really don't want my child to grow up around them or in an environment like that.

Alessandro is the Don of the Moretti mafia family, one of the most notorious I have ever heard of in my entire life. He is also the head of the Lucci cartel, which he inherited from his mother, making him the ruthless man he is.

Five years ago, when I left here, I didn't look back. Once I was discharged from the hospital, I agreed to live with Alessandro. I had no choice then, but now I was back to pursue my personal business. I have some companies I really want to partner with while I also work as an intern for some of them. I didn't really tell Alessandro what I was coming here to do. If I told him I was coming to work for someone, I'm sure he'd disagree. He sees me as his wife, even if it is just a contract marriage.

I changed my name and never looked back. I now bear Alessandro's surname with the middle name my maternal grandmother gave me. No one would know it's me. My bar and club in Italy are doing so well, and it's all thanks to Alessandro. He made it all possible, but I can't keep hiding that this is the kind of dark life I wanted… No! I want to be a top attorney.I want to have a firm to help people. I want to be on the cover of Vogue one day for my influence.

It's been five years, but a lot hasn't changed in this city. As we drove, I still remembered everything vividly; it came flashing back.

“Mommy, look…” Jaden nudged me and pointed at a statue.

Even if I wasn't feeling so good, the nostalgia hit me, and I smiled. “It's beautiful, baby.”

Well, that is one thing about motherhood: it has changed everything about me and how I think. I just have to put on a happy face for him always.

Once we got to the house we would be staying in, it was nothing like the Moretti mansion back in Italy.

It wasn't gigantic, with different men stationed at every nook and corner, but it was a home.

With its mini white fence, it was a three-bedroom cozy apartment that had everything a normal house should have.

The driver finally parked in front of our luxurious apartment. “Here we are, little king!” he announced, tickling Jaden playfully.

Jaden responded with a bright smile. “Mummy, it looks very beautiful but so small,” he remarked.

“Will it be able to contain us all?” he asked seriously.

A radiant smile lit up my face as I replied, “Of course, we’re just three, Jaden. It’s enough for us.”

He nodded, though his eyes remained glued to the apartment, doubt lingering in his expression. After all, he had spent his life in a magnificent mansion filled with luxury.

Zack, one of my husband’s most trusted and dangerous men, along with Jaden’s nanny, Jane, helped carry our things inside. Once they were done, I thanked Zack and bid him farewell, and he did the same for Jaden. I watched them play together, exchanging a playful mafia handshake before Jaden let him go.

As he left, I heaved a deep sigh of relief. I was glad Zack was gone. Initially, Alessandro had wanted to assign three men to me for my safety in New York, but after enough arguments, I agreed to go with just a nanny instead. I didn't want to create a fuss walking around with men who looked rugged and dangerous. I didn’t need their help for now—unless I needed them to kick Luca's ass!

A knot of excitement twisted in my stomach as Jane took Jaden inside, and I followed closely behind.

Taking Jaden’s hand, whose eyes were wide with wonder, I showed him around the apartment. It was cozy yet comfortable, and his father hadn’t forgotten to add a playground for him.

That was so sweet of him. Meanwhile, Jaden quickly jumped into the playground while Jane followed closely to ensure he didn’t injure himself.

I settled into a plush loveseat in the sitting room with a serene expression.

A few minutes later, I was in the kitchen with Jane, trying to make Jaden’s favorite drink when he interrupted us.

“Mommy! Mommy!” he called out as he walked into the kitchen. I turned to him with a soft smile.

“What is it, Jaden?”

“Can you get me this? I love it.” He pointed, holding out his iPad so I could see. I gently crouched down, a radiant smile on my face, eager to see what had caught his attention.

“I want this!” He pointed at a neckpiece, and my eyes widened in disbelief. A chill ran down my spine as I quickly took the iPad from him to take a closer look, hoping it wasn’t my long-lost neckpiece—the one I had lost the day I was disowned.

How on earth was it on eBay? I thought, still gazing at it in surprise.

Who could possibly be selling my neckpiece on eBay? That piece is priceless; it’s the only thing I have that reminds me of my mother.

“Mommy, would you buy it for me?” Jaden’s voice jolted me from my thoughts.

I forced a smile and replied, “Of course, baby, I will buy it for you.”

CHAPTER 41OLIVIA “Less questions, Livie. We are about to get on a private jet. You can ask me questions when we get there,” he replied, patting my back.He walked in front of me, making his way to the jet that was already waiting. I trailed right behind him, and we both settled into the jet. Once I stepped inside, I couldn't help but sense the luxury and exclusivity. The sleek silver body, the curves and lines, exuded a deep sense of power and sophistication. Minutes later, the jet's engine hummed softly as it flew through the air.I leaned back on the plush cream-colored leather seats. The carpet was also very soft and thick underneath my feet—a deep, rich brown that gave off comfort. It wasn't a rented one; it was a private jet for the Jerkins family. It seemed quite luxurious and had expensive taste. I wasn't entirely surprised; the Jerkins family was rich— not just any kind of rich, but old money type of rich.My eyes narrowed at Williams, wh

CHAPTER 40OLIVIA.Some minutes later, I had finished packing my bags for the trip. I didn’t pack too much; I picked out some professional wear and just a pair of at-home slippers to help my feet after wearing heels. Since it was an important trip, I figured I needed to bring some clothes that I could wear out if needed. I knew we might be attending some important events or gatherings, so I prepared for that.I frantically stuffed my bag, and finally, I was done. I sat back on the couch, heaving a deep sigh of relief that I was finished. But then my eyes caught a familiar figure watching me closely from the door.I turned my gaze, and my eyes met Jaden's. I almost froze. How was he awake at this time?“Honey, what is the matter?” I stood up and started to approach him, cradling his head. “What is it, sweetheart? What happened?”“You're packing up. Where are you going?” he asked, his voice fairly above a whisper, and my face fell. My smile

CHAPTER 38OLIVIA After waiting for Gab for a few minutes, I slipped out my phone and texted her that I was on my way home. I couldn’t wait any longer; I needed to go back home to meet my son and also to rest from the hectic day I’d had moving from place to place since I won the case. Yes, I was very excited but also exhausted. After I was announced the winner, I had to go outside for a series of interviews that I couldn’t miss. There were a lot of questions, and I had to stand outside for some time to finish with the reporters. After that, I had some talks with the other attorneys and judges of the jury who were present. Most of them couldn’t remember me, which was even better; I had no intention of explaining why I was with the Jerkins Law Firm and not that of the Brown family.Well, after that, Mr. Smith proposed that I leave with them in their entourage to his office, where I also had to answer some questions the reporters were asking before I joined them for a

CHAPTER 37WILLIAMS.My lips curved into a deep, proud smile as I settled into my chair. I just knew she was going to smash the case—and she did. She showed the world how much talent she has, and right now we’re the talk of the town. It’s only been forty minutes since she won the case, and since then, my phone has been buzzing nonstop. Everyone wants my law firm to take care of their cases. I knew this was going to happen, and this is only the beginning. By tomorrow, when the news covers it and shows footage of the court scenes, Olivia will become a celebrity attorney. I’m just happy to see her win and achieve her dreams. This is a full-circle moment for her, and I’m proud of her.The next minute, the door slowly slid open, and Olivia walked in, her eyes on me. She looked tired, but I wouldn’t waste any time; I would let her go home and enjoy her day immediately.“Congratulations again, dear,” I said, sitting up in my chair. “Olivia, we have somewhere we ne

CHAPTER 36OLIVIA By the time I was done enjoying my slice of cake, everyone had gone back to work. I walked out and saw Gab packing up some glasses, so I quickly joined her.“Oh,” she chuckled. “Thank you, dear. You didn't need to; it's your day, and you're supposed to enjoy it.”Urgh. The birthday drama again? I can't even catch a break at this point. I can’t tell her that it isn’t my birthday. I don’t think Williams did the same thing; I think he just told them to go back to work since we were done with the celebrations. So I’d just keep quiet and act like it is actually my birthday.I helped her carry the glasses to the other side of the firm before the cleaning ladies came to collect them from us. We both proceeded to wash our hands in the bathroom. I glanced at her from time to time as we washed our hands. I couldn’t help but admire her—her fashion sense, her style, and what she has achieved in the judicial world. She is such a stunning woma

CHAPTER 36WILLIAMS My breath hitched, and the smile on my face quickly faded.Today is not her birthday? That has to be some twenty-first-century joke. I cross-checked the date like four times before I started making any preparations. What the hell is she talking about?“What do you mean today isn’t your birthday?” I asked, confusion twisting in my voice. “Don’t tell me you forgot your own birthday!”It’s okay to be ambitious and hardworking, but you should also love yourself and take care of yourself. Put yourself first. Birthdays only come once a year, so why should you have forgotten about yours, huh?She heaved a deep sigh and dropped the flowers and watch on the table. Looking at her, I felt a surge of frustration and confusion at the same time.“Williams, I understand your frustration, but I'm no dummy. I know my date of birth off the top of my head to tell you that today isn’t my birthday.”“I’m equally shocked t

CHAPTER 34WILLIAMS I quickly dashed into the bathroom and took my bath. In a couple of minutes, I was done, dressed, and headed downstairs where the car was waiting for me. Once inside, my driver took me straight to the firm. Sitting in the car, I checked the time; it was almost ten in the morning. A small smile crept onto my lips. Yes, I was early. I wanted to supervise everything to ensure it was just right before she arrived. I didn’t want this to go awry. I wanted it to be perfect so she could be swept off her feet.In a couple of minutes, my car pulled into the firm’s compound, and the engine was turned off. I stepped out and made my way inside quickly. Just as I expected, some of the staff weren’t there yet. The ones who were at work were the workaholics who hated going home or having a little time to themselves. Each time they had a moment to themselves, they would surely come back to the firm and immerse themselves in work. I guess that was what made them

CHAPTER 32 WILLIAMS My ringtone blared through, and my eyes stirred open. It was still seven in the morning. Who the hell would be calling another person this early? I assumed it must have been an emergency, so I reached for my phone. I grabbed it from the other end of the bed where I had dropped it last night. I rubbed my eyes, trying to shake off the sleep so I could see clearly. Once I did, I realized it was one of my security staff at the firm buzzing my phone this early. I let out a deep sigh before swiping up to answer the call.It had better be because the firm is burning to the ground that he called me for. Anything less than that, I might have his ass fired for disturbing my sleep."What the fuck is it, Shaw? Don’t you fucking look at the damn time to see it isn’t convenient to call anyone at this hour?” I snapped as soon as I picked up the call."I'm really sorry, sir, but I called your PA, Gabrielle, and she didn't pick up, so I had to

CHAPTER 32 OLIVIA “Hey, you look oddly familiar. Did you come from Houston?” A six-foot biker walked up to me and asked. I shook my head, disapproving of him.“Oh, looks like she doesn't speak. What a waste of pussy, brother,” he teased, and a whole lot of them burst out laughing. My grip on my drink tightened, but I just swallowed and forced a smile at the man. I had nothing to say to them right now until I watched them all get locked up behind bars for their crimes. I had been sitting here for a couple of hours now, and I had seen a lot of crazy things happen. In just a few hours, I had seen the bikers have a race. The race was a little exciting since I had never seen anything like it. They raced, and some of them bet their money on who would win. It was quite thrilling, except for the fact that I heard some of the riders boast that they took different routes through some person’s house just to make it back early and win the prize. The most annoying of
