Chapter 27: Sector Seven Ambush

last update 公開日: 2026-10-09 11:15:05

The armored transport to Sector Seven bounced over the ruined wasteland like an angry, rusted tin can.

Inside the troop bay, Toby was practically vibrating in his harness, madly recalibrating an anti-matter pulse rifle while muttering equations that sounded like a stroke in progress. Killian sat across from him, sharpening his massive S-rank greatsword with a whetstone. Every heavy scrape of metal sent sparks flying across the floor, his broad shoulders practically taking up two whole seats.

And Phoenix? Phoenix was lounging across the benches with her boots kicked up on a crate of high-yield plasma grenades, peeling an apple with a black-market trench knife like she was on a beach vacation.

"Boss," Toby blurted out over the roar of the diesel engine, his goggles askew. "I've been looking at the tactical intel for Sector Seven. Calling it a 'meat grinder' is an insult to butchery. The outpost commander hasn't sent a supply report in three weeks, the local beasts are high-tier mutant aberrations, and the previous garrison was wiped out in forty-eight hours. Sterling didn't assign us a mission—he sent us to a fucking meat hook!"

"Relax, genius," Phoenix said, tossing an apple slice into her mouth and chewing casually. "If Sterling wanted us dead, he should’ve sent something stronger than a few overgrown lizards and bad logistics. Besides, frontline outposts mean no faculty supervision, no Class A snobs breathing down our necks, and zero rules."

Killian paused his sharpening, wiping down his blade with a rag. He looked up at her, his storm-blue eyes darkening with that raw, fierce intensity that always made her pulse do a funny little skip.

"Sector Seven is border territory, Boss," Killian growled, his gravelly voice rumbling under the roar of the engine. "If any Class A mercenaries or Sterling's hired assassins try to drop in on us, we can bury their bodies in the wasteland and nobody will ever find them."

"See?" Phoenix grinned, winking at him. "That's why Killian's my favorite. Cold, practical, and thoroughly bloodthirsty."

Killian’s jaw twitched. A deep, furious crimson wave instantly washed up his neck, creeping all the way to the tips of his ears. He slammed his sword back into its sheath with an aggressive CLANG, suddenly fascinated by the mud on his left boot. "I'm just... stating tactical facts, Boss."

"Right, tactical facts," Toby snorted, rolling his eyes as he soldered another circuit. "You look like a giant red lobster, man."

"Shut up, Lin, or I'll throw you out the rear hatch," Killian muttered, not daring to look in Phoenix's direction.

Before Toby could reply, the transport lurched violently to a halt. The intercom speaker overhead screeched with loud static before the driver's panicked voice cut through: "Ambush! Boss, we got a Class A interceptor squad blocking the canyon pass! They’re demanding to search the vehicle!"

Phoenix tossed her knife into the air, caught it by the hilt, and stood up with a slow, predatory stretch. Her dark eyes flashed with a brief, dangerous flicker of crimson dragon light before settling back into her harmless F-rank facade.

"Search the vehicle?" Phoenix purred, swinging her star-iron spear onto her shoulder. "Well, shit. It’d be rude not to welcome our guests."

She hit the hydraulic release button, and the rear ramp slammed down onto the desert dust.

Standing in the narrow rocky gorge were a dozen heavily armed Class A elite mercenaries, wearing high-tech power armor emblazoned with the noble crests of the Academy's top families. At the front stood a arrogant-looking S-rank commander holding a heavy plasma cannon, a condescending smirk plastered across his face.

"Squad Outcast!" the commander shouted, stepping forward. "By order of the Noble Coalition, your transport is carrying contraband stolen from the Imperial Vault! Surrender your weapons and step out for execution—I mean, inspection!"

Phoenix walked down the ramp, stepping into the scorching desert heat with her hands in her cargo pockets.

"Contract hit?" Phoenix asked pleasantly, taking a slow step toward him. "How much did Sterling pay you dickheads to intercept us out here?"

"That's classified, defect," the commander sneered, raising his plasma cannon right at her chest. "Now get on your knees before I blow a hole through your—"

He didn't get to finish the sentence.

Phoenix vanished.

Before the mercenary's brain could even process that she was gone, Phoenix reappeared directly in his personal space. Her hand shot out like a strike of lightning, grabbing the barrel of his six-figure plasma cannon and crushing it into a metal pretzel with her bare fingers.

CRUNCH.

The commander stared in absolute, shock-induced horror at his ruined gun, then looked up into Phoenix’s dark eyes—which were glowing like twin supernovas of pure dragon rage.

"Wrong answer," Phoenix whispered.

She grabbed him by his power-armored collar, spun on her heel, and slammed him face-first into the canyon wall so hard the solid stone cracked like glass.

"Killian! Toby!" Phoenix shouted over her shoulder as the remaining eleven mercenaries frantically scrambled to draw their weapons. "Clear the road! We’re on a schedule!"

"With pleasure, Boss!" Killian roared.

The SS-rank vanguard exploded off the ramp like a runaway freight train, his metallic aura flaring golden as he tackled three mercenaries at once, plowing them straight into the dirt. Meanwhile, Toby set up a portable plasma turret in three seconds flat, cackling like a mad scientist as a wall of blue laser fire lit up the canyon.

"You picked the wrong transport, boys!" Toby screamed over the gunfire. "Squad Outcast is in town!"

Phoenix stepped over the unconscious commander, dusted off her hands, and lit a cigarette with a flick of her thumb.

It took thirty seconds.

By the time the dust settled, twelve high-tech Class A mercenaries were groaning in a twisted pile of broken power armor and shattered weapons.

Killian wiped a smudge of oil off his forehead, stepping beside Phoenix as Toby hauled their gear back into the transport. "Road's clear, Boss."

"Good job, boys," Phoenix smirked, blowing a ring of smoke toward the desert sky as she climbed back onto the transport. "Let me know when we hit Sector Seven. I hear the frontline food is terrible, and I intend to complain to the management."

The door to Phoenix’s private quarters hissed shut, the heavy pneumatic seals locking with a deep, echoing thud that cut off the ambient hum of Outpost 79’s main garage. Inside, the room was dimly lit by the low amber glow of the terminal monitors and the faint crimson ambient light wafting off Phoenix’s skin.Phoenix tossed her combat vest onto the steel desk, the leather hitting the surface with a heavy thud. Before she could turn around, Killian closed the distance, his massive frame blocking out the room's single overhead lamp. His breath hitched as he stared down at her, his stormy blue eyes burning with raw, unadulterated need."You like pushing me to the absolute edge, don't you, Boss?" Killian growled, his voice a low, gravelly rasp that vibrated straight through her chest."I like seeing how much weight you can carry, big boy," Phoenix purred, stepping into his space until her chest pressed against his bare sternum. "And so far, you haven't dropped the load once."Killian did

The command elevator surged upward with a metallic screech, the floor plates vibrating beneath their boots. Phoenix leaned back against the steel wall, catching her breath as the crimson light in her eyes settled into a steady, predatory gleam. Killian stood at her left, his massive frame still radiating heat, his knuckles white around the grip of his star-iron greatsword. On her right, Valerie casually leaned against the railing, twirling a high-caliber round between her gloved fingers with lazy precision."Try not to shoot the holoscreen this time, Val," Phoenix drawled, throwing her a wicked glance. "We need to actually hear their offer before we reject it.""No promises, Boss," Valerie smirked, sliding the round back into her tactical belt. "Depends on how annoying their voices are."The elevator doors hissed open, revealing Outpost 79’s main war room. Soren and Toby were huddled over the central holotable, frantic fingers flying across flickering holographic keyboards. In the cor

The high-pressure hydraulic lifts of Outpost 79 groaned like dying beasts under the sixty-ton weight of Sterling’s Nightmare. The suffocating stench of scorched star-iron, cooked plasma, and burnt-the-fuck-out wire insulation billowed through the subterranean staging bay in thick, acrid clouds. Sparks showered onto the grease-stained concrete as the rig’s cooling vents hissed, dumping clouds of scalding white steam into the freezing garage air. Before the main drive assembly had even spun down, Jax kicked the rear hatch open with a deafening BANG. He dragged three crates of stolen dark-matter ammo across the corrugated deck, metal screaming against metal. "Toby! Soren! Get your useless asses down here with the cranes! We’ve got enough Class-A battery cores to power a small fucking moon or blow this entire sector straight to hell!"Valerie dropped off the rig's roof rack like a shadow. Her combat boots hit the concrete with a heavy thud as she set her anti-materiel sniper rifle onto an

The heavy iron doors of Sterling’s Nightmare slammed shut, sealing off the roaring engine rumble of Outpost 79 into a low, vibrating thrum. The sixty-ton war rig devoured the desolate highway at breakneck speed, tearing straight toward Sector Seven. In the rear command bay, surrounded by crate stacks of SSS-rank munitions, Valerie sat on a tool chest, her long legs stretched out as she wiped down her sniper rifle's high-tech optics. Phoenix leaned against the opposite workbench, tossing an unactivated plasma grenade in the air and catching it casually. She looked Valerie up and down, a mischievous smirk pulling at her lips. "You know, Val," Phoenix drawled, "for someone who spends all day looking through a long glass, you sure miss a lot of close-up action." Valerie didn't even look up from her lens, though her lips twitched. "I don't miss anything, Boss. I just prefer my targets at five hundred yards where they can't make a mess on my boots." "Is that right?" Phoenix stepped ove

By dawn, Outpost 79’s underground garage looked like an illegal military arms fair on steroids. Toby and Soren were high on energy drinks, cackling like mad scientists while welding experimental plasma cannons directly onto the assault transport. Jax was lounging on an anti-matter missile crate, casually eating cold noodles with a bayonet, while Valerie fine-tuned her sniper scope to punch through heavy mech armor. At the center of it all stood Phoenix, admiring their shiny new toy: a heavily reinforced, star-iron-plated war rig complete with dual rocket pods and a high-frequency battering ram. "She's gorgeous," Phoenix sighed, wiping a spot of engine grease off her cheek. "I’m naming her Sterling’s Nightmare." "I still think we should have mounted the extra flamethrower on the bumper," Jax called out, chewing loudly. "Nothing says 'good morning' like third-degree burns." "We need the bumper clear for ramming, Jax," Valerie countered, taking a swig of cold coffee. "And speak

The second Phoenix’s palm slammed onto the SSS-rank Dragon Sovereign Core, the ancient vault didn't just heat up—it exploded like a dirty bomb filled with red lighting and pure, unadulterated violence. BOOM! The shockwave blew weapon rack doors off their hinges and sent half-ton crates flying like styrofoam. Killian was moving before the blast even hit. He threw his massive frame in front of Valerie and Toby, slamming his broadshield into the obsidian floor with an SS-rank roar. "BRACE!" "Jesus fucking Christ!" Jax screamed, ducking behind a pillar as her buzz-cut hair blew straight back in the superheated gale. "Is she absorbing a core or nuking the continent?!" At the epicenter, Phoenix floated three feet off the ground, her dark eyes lit up with liquid crimson fire. The red jewel in her grip liquefied, pouring straight into her pores, coiling around her ribs, and burning through her tactical vest like a brand. Ancient, glowing draconic runes flared down her throat and across
