30. A Monster
DamianI hissed slightly as I felt her fangs break the sink and sink deeper. However, I kept a firm hold on her waist as she sucked on my neck. I understood her desire and so I did not wrench her away but my gaze settled on Alexandra's sagged frame. She was massaging her neck before her gaze locked with mine. Her eyes blazed with anger and contempt. She heaved herself up and sneered, "Deal with her." And with that, she stormed past me. Once again, I focussed on my mate who had stopped sucking on my neck. She pulled away and fixed her gaze on the crook of my neck. I didn't say anything, giving her time to process her actions. Several emotions flitted across her face — shock, disgust, helplessness. She slowly looked up at me, her black lashes fluttering.  Pain and anguish was written all over her face. I cupped her face as she continued to stare at me silently. I felt a phantom ache, thinking that if she had been human, her lashes

31. Begrudging Acceptance
MyraWhat had I done? I looked at Alice's lifeless body, her eyes bulged out, her mouth wide apart as if to cry for help but that scream, that cry was stifled forever, robbed by me. The inhuman cry that tore out my lips pierced the stillness of the atmosphere. I couldn't cry, I couldn't feel my heartbeat. All I could feel was pain that radiated from somewhere within me. I honestly don't know how I managed to take the life of this girl, the only one who had been remotely nice to me when I came here as a bride. I just had the memory of pulling myself out of Damian's hold and racing down the corridor in search of something, dazed and craving blood. After that whatever happened was blurry and like a whirlwind that destroyed everything in its wake.  My eyes locked with Damian's  —- my mate. He looked back at me sadly. His pale face held remorse, and I knew the reason behind it. His mate had turned into a monster now. My li

32. Phantom Pain
DamianThe glass chandelier shattered on the floor, creating disharmony in the otherwise silent surroundings. But then again it mingled with my mate's cries of pain and anguish which in turn made me want to kill the one who was the root of her misery. Her pain-filled howls weren't audible to the other servants. I had predicted the Council's surprise visit today but they didn't show up. Keeping her in the attic room was primarily because of them but it seemed that it was a good decision for whatever she was suffering from. I had sent Andrew to fetch news but her misery was aggravating me by minutes. "Sire," Andrew called, drawing me out of my thoughts. "What news?" I murmured. "And it better be a bloody good one.""Marianne has received 200 lashes of the silver whip. Her condition is dire." His tone held a hint of contempt, towards whom I don't know but the news made me feel content. I nodded. "Very good news indeed. How was sh

33. Fading Memories and a Dagger
Damian"Arrange some herbs and tincture for us. We have to be out of this mansion by tonight," I ordered as I crumpled the letter viciously. Andrew nodded and left immediately while I went back into the room where Myra lay unconscious. I picked her up in my arms, her head lolled to one side, resting limply on my shoulder as I carried her down the stairs. So they were planning to search my mansion and drag my mate in order to execute her? For a crime, which she hadn't even committed? Rage engulfed my senses. How dare they? My grip tightened. "Ugh," an incoherent sound made me look at Myra whose eyes had fluttered open but only slightly. I laid her on my bed —our bed and said, "Rest for a while. We need to leave. Soon." I don't know how much she understood but she nodded nonetheless before closing her eyes again. My heart would have ached at her pitiable condition had it been a beating one or so what I have read in the books.&nbs

34. A Place that holds Pain
MyraI opened my eyes to stare at a wooden ceiling of what possibly could be a carriage. My ears picked up the sound of hooves and the occasional sound of a whip. It was then that I realised gentle fingers carding through my hair and that my head was pillowed on someone's lap. I vaguely remembered the pain and my screaming after which everything else was hazy. I groaned as the carriage lurched slightly and immediately the hand that was caressing my hair, wrapped around my stomach protectively from preventing a fall. The pain had dulled and my mind cleared gradually. "Damian?" I called, knowing that no one else would tend to me like he did. No one else would dare to. "Yes?" came the soft reply. Something had shifted between the two of us. Even though we had confessed, we never got to talk about it after that. The rhythmic sound of the wheels and the hooves made me feel drowsy. "What happened?" I asked. My tongue felt too heavy for wor

35. A Well-wisher
MyraThe air in the room shifted as if warmed by our desires. I swallowed nervously as I looked at my mate, his gaze clouded with love and lust. I nodded jerkily, lowering my gaze, suddenly feeling shy. The 'feelings' and 'emotions' hadn't receded yet, I was thankful for that. I felt Damian's hand around the nape of my neck. He tilted my face and murmured huskily, "Shall we?" At the back of my mind, I knew this was his way of asking permission even if we were mates. I answered him by weaving my fingers through his hair and bringing our lips together. Damian was a handsome man and I had always felt attracted to him. Our lips moved in sync, his fingers clenched and unclenched pulling me even closer. He squeezed my waist lightly, making me gasp. His tongue slipped into my mouth, exploring every orifice. I tilted my head back further, pulling his hair as the kiss grew heated. The hand on my nape glided down and belatedly I realised his f

36. An Ally
DamianPocketing the note, I padded to the kitchen where Andrew had left some rations. I took the food upstairs and entered the room. Myra was still sleeping peacefully. I admire her sleeping form for a moment from the doorway. A slender bare arm splayed on the side where I had been half-sitting sometime ago, her lips slightly parted and her bare shoulder adorned by a few fading marks peek from the covers. Her skin looked pale against the dark covers. I lit a few candles to chase away the darkness, gradually setting in the room. I placed the tray on the bedside table and gently shook her awake. She blinked her eyes open, a languid smile blooming on her lips.  I mirrored back her smile and bend down to kiss her lips softly. "I brought food," I murmured against her lips. She hummed in contentment. She sat up, the bed covers pooling to her waist, I drank in the sight — her bare torso, covered only by her cascading brown tresses, her neck baring

37. Friend or Foe?
DamianI have rarely been taken off guard, have rarely become stupefied but at this moment, I was. I stood rooted to my spot. I was highly aware of Myra's weighing gaze at the back of my head but I was too dumbstruck to do much. I hadn't seen him since...it's been years maybe. Appearance-wise he hadn't changed, he looked more roguish though with his shabby overcoat and frayed breeches, but his golden eyes were sharp as ever. A smile grazed his lips as he stared at me. "We meet after a long time, Raul." He walked up to me until he was just one step shy from invading my personal space. "Connor," I uttered. I didn't know I would ever see him again, not after what I did to his mate. He nodded. "You haven't forgotten me then? That's good to know," His smile remained in its place but I could detect the edge and the iciness in it. I furrowed my eyebrows. "Why did you want to meet me?" I asked, partially shielding Myra. If he had received th

38. Selfish
MyraMy mind stuttered at the information. He killed someone? His friend on top of that? I stared at him for the longest of time as he averted his gaze and opted to look at the wall instead. I could understand that at some point he might have regretted following the High Queen's decision."When you...after you did that...did you feel anything?" I just wanted him to nod and say 'yes'. Even though I knew that the Damian before I met and the Damian now were vastly different, I still wanted to know that he had an iota of goodness. He shook his head slowly. "I wasn't so forgiving and neither I felt regret." I did not comment nor reply to this confession. I did not pull away from his grasp because I understood that if not at that time but sometimes along the way, he must have felt the wrongness of his deed. "Why are you telling me this?" I asked in a steady voice. He blinked and turned his head. "Because I want you to know who he is, Connor and

39. Grudge
DamianMy eyebrows twitched as Connor sipped tea calmly sitting in the living room. Myra sat on one of the settees. Her gaze darting towards me from time to time. "How did you find this house?" I asked him, crossing my arms across my chest. Connor placed the cup and saucer down and leaned on the sofa. "I...navigated." I furrowed my eyebrows. It wasn't possible unless...No, Andrew wouldn't divulge a thing, even if his life was on the line. "Why are you here?" I asked impatiently. When Connor knocked on the door this morning, I had almost ripped out his throat, thinking it was some imposter. Then he asked for a cup of tea from Myra, who had come downstairs as well and refused to answer any question until now. "I realised that talking in the middle of the woods was a dangerous thing, especially now that both of you are fugitives like me," he explained, his tone held a hint of sarcasm which grated my skin. I knew he would not leave any o
