Casting one last look around the room to see if he had forgotten anything, he is satisified to see that he had everything that they had brought in. Andy gathers the children to his sides and each child, frightened beyond belief at his sudden display of fear, hold tightly on to his shirt, grabbing it by the fistfuls. Andy carries all of their luggage that they had taken into the motel with them out into the cold night.   Lacey stares at Dave in shock as his words slowly register in her laggy, sleep deprived brain. Andy is hurt? “Please, don't hurt him. Please.” “Well, I guess how nice or how rough we play with him depends on you, Lacey. See, if you act up and get me angry, then I might be forced to take my bad mood out on him. But if you are nice and sweet, then I will be nice and sweet in return. I might just let that big bear of a husband of yours leave her without me putting a bullet between his eyes. How does that sound?” Dave asks her, dropping onto his haunches in front of her. Lacey whimpers in despair at the thought of his words. No. No, she can't let him hurt Andy. “Okay. Okay. I won't- I will try my hardest, not to.. not to make you mad..” She is finally able to get out, past the trap

Lacey was not sure that she believed him or his offer of help, but what other choice did she have? She could stay in this place, like a sitting duck, waiting for Dave to come back and finish his sexual assualt that he started, or she could take her chance with yet another Matthews man, where she could possibly get away and find her family. “Do you know where my family is?” Lacey asks him, worried sick over her children and her husband. “Where are my babies?” “They are still in the car, hiding. I took a few more blankets out there and a thermos of hot chocolate but your son wouldn't unlock the doors. So, I set it outside of the car and told him to get it if he wanted to, that the two of you would be out soon.” “But y

"Is he alive?" Her voice rings out loud in the quiet stillness of the night. She hears the fear in her own voice, over the scared crying of her children.  “Yeah! Yeah, he is alive!” Andy tells her, relief evident in his tone. “But we have got to get him out of here right now if we want him to stay that way." Andy shakes his head, stupified. "I can not believe that they actually shot him! He is his son! Nates brother! And they tried to kill him!" Lacey is jut as angry and confused by that notion. She does not know which one pulled the trigger and actually fired at him, but it does not matter. He is their family and they tried to murder him. That is sickening.

* Extremely Graphic Content Warning *   Andy listened closely for the sound of Lacey's voice, but he had not heard anything since she had left minutes ago. Every now and then he would hear the sound of rustling leaves or sticks breaking, causing him to wonder if it was Lacey or the Matthews? “Wake up, Owen. Stay awake. Talk to me.” Jack whispers, shaking the boy laying beside of Andy. They are all huddled together for warmth, as far back into the hideout as they can get. Jack is sitting right beside Owen, with his knees in the wet snow as he holds a folded up blanket to Owen's chest, pressing down as hard as his thin, little arms will let him. The fifth blanket is spread over Owen, to keep him warm.

The red stain should haunt her, since she had just taken another man's life but she feels no guilt or remorse. This man was going to do even worse to her. She knew that once the adreneline had died down and she wasn't overcome with her fight or flight instincts that she might feel differently. Lacey decided to save those thoughts for another time as she sets out through the snow. She has the gun in her hand as she scan t

Lacey dropped to her knees in the snow, knowing that she could not go on. She did not have the strength to carry on for even another inch. The wet snow came up to her hips, freezing her even more than she already was. She felt the muscles in her legs stiffening to a painful degree as the cold took it's toll on her battered body. She looks up to the skies and says a fervent prayer. Even if she has to die, she asks for God to spare her babies. Just because she is not strong enough to make it does not mean that her babies had to die. As she lowers her eyes away from the starless sky, she spots it just in front of her a little way. The fallen tree that hides the opening to the cavern in which her whole world lies tucked away. It is just about seventy to eighty feet ahead of her. She ha
