Chapter 41
I pace up and down in the parlour, taking in the splendour. Gods, these people must be rolling in money. This room, like his bedroom, carries Kane’s stamp. Hardwood, area rugs, and beautiful, functional furniture. White. Again. I smile, and perch on the edge of a comfortable armchair, folding my hands in my lap, trying to get my nerves under control. I feel much more sure of myself now that my father left, but I have no idea what Kane’s going to say or do when he comes back. When he turned on my father, I almost stepped in to interfere, but a very strong instinct told me it would be the wrong thing to do. Normally, a man getting in my business like that would annoy me, but I enjoyed it when Kane grabbed my father and asserted his dominance, showing Daniel Jones who is really in charge around here. And it’s kind of comforting to know Kane has my back, that he’d never let anyone hurt me again. The door flies open and Kane steps inside, his face a little grim, b

Chapter 42
“So where am I staying?” I ask while I readjust my clothes. “The cabin? “Ah,” Kane looks up and blushes. Gods, it’s cute. I want to eat him up. “No. I kind of destroyed it.” “Why?” He shrugs and runs his hands through his hair. “I threw a temper tantrum. “Because I left?” He gives me a sheepish grin and cocks his head to the side, raising his eyebrows. “Maybe.” I grin and put my arms around his neck. “It’s okay.” He growls softly and kisses me, but quickly pushes me away again. “You can’t do that again. You can’t run off like that.” “Okay.” “No, I mean it Willow. I was sick with worry.” “I said okay.” “Did you tell them you have a wolf now?” he asks, and sits on one of his pristine chairs, dangling his big hands between his knees. “Lady Blaire knows, no one else does.” He frowns, and it takes my breath away. Gods, he’s hot. Why haven’t I noticed just how damn sexy he is until right this moment? “What is she going to do about it?” “Nothing. She says she won’t risk tearing

Chapter 43
Kane's POV: I smell her before I hear her. The stench of burning hair and flesh hangs heavy in the air. And I know it’s her I’m smelling. My stomach clenches with nausea. Dario growls loudly. There will be no stopping him today. I run down the hallway, her faint mewling sounds shattering my sanity to pieces. I kick her door open and freeze in shock. She’s curled up in a tight little bundle, her legs and arms bend at unnatural angles around her body, fingers pulled into claws. Barely breathing, she’s nothing but a raw, open wound. Her skin sizzles and turns black before my eyes. Oh Goddess, fuck. I’ve never seen anything like it. How can she endure all this pain and still be alive? There’s nothing I can do. No way I can ease her suffering. I bite back a cry of agony and walk backward out of the room, going straight to Lady Blaire. I don’t bother to knock. She’s sitting on the bed, her fingers digging into the mattress, tears streaming down her face. “Is this not against your laws?”

Chapter 44
Kane's POV: “You killed Daniel Jones?” Glenn asks. “Uh-huh.” My chancellor goes a funny pale-green colour. “You killed Daniel fucking Jones?” “Yes,” I say, annoyed. “Where’s Willow?” “My bedroom.” “Goddess, Kane. His coven is on the way. Forget Moon Flower and Vickus. Crystal Rose is gonna throw everything they have at us when they find out.” “I had Lady Blaire’s blessing. She asked me to do it.” “Fuuuuck,” he exhales and sinks to the couch. “I had to do it. He was…” I can’t actually bring myself to say what he did while he tortured my mate. “The things he did to her, Glenn. I have no words.” “That bad, huh?” “Hm. And I felt it. Her pain--” I shudder --“I don’t know how she made it this far in life, I really don’t.” “Okay--” he runs his hands through his hair --“I just hope Lady Blaire runs interference…you know witches can be devious shits.” I nod. “I’m more worried about my father.” Glenn waves his hand in the air. “He won’t care…he’ll be ecstatic that you killed one o

Chapter 45
I wake from a nightmare, my fist jammed in my mouth so I won’t scream. Something I used to do when I was small so no one would hear me cry. The room is dark, but it doesn’t scare me as much as it did before. I have wolf vision now and can see everything just as clearly as I would have if the lights were on. “Are you okay?” Charmaine asks from the bedroom door. “Yes,” I croak through dry lips and drag myself into a sitting position. Usually, after a torture session that severe, I’d hurt for days afterward, but I feel okay. Almost normal. I don’t know if my wolf healed me, or if it has something to do with sleeping in Kane’s arms. “Both,” Suri answers helpfully. “Our mate stayed with us all day.” “Yeah, he’s a good one.” Gods I stink. Like rotten meat and onions. “I need a shower,” I say aloud. “Yeah,” Charmaine agrees. “Do that, then come watch a movie with me or something. We’ll have a proper girl’s night. Does Kane have wine up here?” “I have no idea.” I smile. “But there’s usu

Several more bottles of wine, and a very drunken me later, we stumble to bed. I sit on my knees, looking at Kane undress, and get ready for bed. Maybe it’s the wine, or maybe it’s just knowing that tonight I can sleep free of fear, but I’m back to being horny. He catches my eyes on him and gives me a smile. “Forget it, you’re drunk.” “Yeah so?” “I’m a lecherous asshole, but I’m not ‘mess with drunk she-wolves’ bad.” “I’m your mate.” “I don’t care. Come on--” he pats the bed --“get in drinky smurf.” I start laughing and crawl under the covers. He turns on his side, his hand tucked under his head, staring at me with sleepy eyes. Gods, he’s beautiful. “Thank you,” I say. “For what?” “Killing him. I couldn’t do it.” “Of course not, he was your father.” “It’s awful, I know, but I’m glad he’s dead.” “It’s okay. He wasn’t a good guy.” “He was a monster.” “I thought I’m the monster.” I did say that – more than once. “No, you’re a good man. Better than most.” He yawns, his eyes cl

Chapter 47
Kane’s POV: We eat breakfast in relative silence. Willow is nervous and occupied with her own thoughts. “You have to go back to the witches today,” I say, more to break the silence than anything else. “I know. I don’t want to.” “You are their next high priestess, they will look up to you. They need you.” “I don’t want it. I don’t want to be their high-priestess.” I almost drop my fork in surprise. Three days ago, she ran out of here like a bat out of hell, now she doesn’t want to go back. The woman’s giving me whiplash. “What you want is not important. What you have to do is.” “What have they ever done for me? Honestly now, Kane? Lady Blaire heard my father torturing me, she felt my pain, and she did nothing.” “What about the fledglings?” What am I doing? Why am I trying to convince her to go back, when all I wanted these last few weeks was to keep her here? “You said you can change things for them.” Stop it Kane, fuck. She’s here. Now. And she’s finally willing to stay. “You ha

Chapter 48
Kane’s POV: A lot of things make sense now. I’m pretty sure my father only installed me as king so he could feign ignorance when his fraud was revealed. We found a bank account in my name, with money from there funnelled into shell companies, and then to an off-shore account, from that account it goes to Patrick’s trust fund, which my father administered, another fake company account, and his elders. And that was just what I could find with very little effort. There’s so much more, and the one thing I know for sure is that it all points back to me. “Goddess, this is sophisticated,” Jackson says, looking over the files. Glenn stands against the wall, his hands jammed in his pockets, a sure sign that he’s agitated. He doesn’t trust Jackson, but I do. My witch senses are developing, and I’m not in the least bit concerned. “Is there a way we can prove it’s him?” “Yeah. I am a forensic accountant. I’ll unravel this for you. It will take a while though.” “Thanks, Alpha. Get cracking. Se

Now that I see him up close, I can tell that he’s not my father. His nose is different, his lips are fuller, and he has my mother’s ears, not my father’s. “Willow?” he asks, looking uncertain. You’d think a man approaching his two-hundredth birthday would be less bashful. “Are you okay?” “Yes--” I shake my head --“I’m just…flabbergasted, that’s a good word, let’s go with that.” He laughs softly, and my blood runs cold. He sounds just like my father when he laughs. “Imagine my shock when Lady Blaire phoned and asked me if I’m interested in becoming the new coven master.” “Why you?” He shrugs. “I suppose the others didn’t want the job.” “How many youth spells have you cast over the years?” It always bothers me when I meet a witch that cast youth spells. Aunt Mildred did it too, but stopped when she was ejected. “Three times. You've never done it?” “No. And I never will. I promised Kane.” “Hm,” he grunts. “Because of the baby blood? I told him you don’t need to kill the baby – we

Chapter 50
I lean against a tree, watching Kane laugh as he folds his hand around a metal mug, and sips on the hot coffee. He looks happy and relaxed, and I feel a tug of envy. The witches don’t have the same friendship and camaraderie as the wolves. There’s no warmth, no love. We are suspicious of each other, treating our coven members with cold indifference. When Kane said march, he really meant march. The wolves shifted outside the palace and ran in the direction of the forests, towards the human town. Splitting off into squads so they could cover more ground. Each squad took a handful of witches with them, following the wolves in SUVs. Tonight, we’ll sleep under the stars. There are no tents, no sleeping bags, nothing, just the basic supplies of food, water, and clothes for the wolves. Kane and I agreed to keep up the charade for now. It’s been difficult enough for the wolves to accept the coven’s presence -- they’re not yet ready to hear their new queen is a witch-
