This is it, I thought to myself. I waited for the pain, the death. I'll die in a strange land but I will die in the arms of the girl I like. Then someone coughed. That wasn't me. I waited for the pain. Nothing came. Nothing happened.I slowly cracked my eyes open, expecting to see that pearly gates of heaven open with Angels on either side waiting to welcome me in. But what I saw was Starlight's face, her dull eyes and the blood that pooled in her mouth. Her skin was paler than it usually was.Kayla opened her eyes too and let out an ear splitting scream. Starlight gagged, more blood spurted from her mouth as she did. The front of her shirt where the spear had pierced through her heart was soaked with blood. She was half fallen on the floor, her body sprawled on the ground in front of us. One hand held the spear in her chest as if in a fruitless effort to pull it out. "Starlight!" Kayla screamed.Starlight opened and shut her mouth as if she was trying to talk but her efforts cau

"Who were you talking to?"I thought about lying then decided not to, jerking a hand toward the door instead. She frowned still smiling though. "What?""The door. The doors talk around here.""They do?""Yes, we do," Pyne replied sassily. "What do you think, sexy vampire?"Kayla laughed, surprised by Pyne swinging himself against her. She entered and stood on the other side to look at his face."Wow that's something I have never seen in all my life.""Magic doors," I supplied. I was nervous. Now that it's all over and we've rested a little I needed to know where we stood. I know, we just finished a battle and all that and I should be more concerned about mourning the dead and thinking about where to go from here. But when you've had a brush with death more than once, you tend not to think about the past, you only care about how to move on and was exactly what I was doing.Kayla laughed again, raising slender fingers to touch Pyne who seemed to enjoy her touch. He even gave me a triump

It was almost as if nothing had happened here a few hours ago. Gone were the dust and scattered rubble. Every stone was back in place. Even the maze garden that i had crashed into when Ashterah appeared was now back to normal. The guards were back to their position at the gates - where were they throughout the battle again? The evening sky was a lovely dusky purple with a few stars winking behind the inky curtain. The moon was a faint crescent in the sky. With Kayla's hand in mine, we walked to the back of the hotel. There was a trail there that led to the private woods. The path was lit by dimly lit lamps, all of them about 3 metres high, placed on either side of the path.I had tried to collect twice and failed twice to collect the picnic basket from Kayla. She protected it jealously and every attempt to collect it was met with a quietly spoken, "It's not heavy you know?"And she wouldn't stop smiling. We walked down the path to the woods. Touched - and I must confess, stunned by that statement, I reached out to touch her face. She had said the same thing when we made our way from WhiSare to Milani but I guess I must have thought that she was trying to tell me to be careful on our trip so she wouldn't have to explain to mom in detail what happened to me.But her eyes were honest. She meant every single word she said. "I have nothing to live for without you Shawn. If that spear had somehow missed me and come for you, I would have found a way to make sure I died with you. Losing you...I will never risk your life again."Her hand in mine reached for my arm, then my shoulder. Her cold fingers convulsed on my shoulder. She squeezed and pulled me in.I went willingly. I have never let a woman be in charge of my thoughts, or my life this way. But with Kayla I am willing to experience first times. Her eyes were on my lips which parted in anticipation for her cold kiss. Hers were damp, red and parted.I closed my eyes and her

This time there was no hesitation, none of the shy softness from her earlier kisses. This time there was a need, a strong need that only resonated with the need inside of me too. A strong urge to claim yet overwhelmed me, though how I am supposed to claim her, I don't know. But I wanted more than just looks and touches and kisses. When she cupped me beneath the water surface, I knew what I wanted then. And there was no holding back.I reached down to touch her too; her breasts - small and perfect for my hands, her belly - taut and the warmth between her legs. She opened her mouth in surprise when I touched her the way she touched me. I followed her mouth, drinking in her impassioned cries. When her head fell back I turned n attention to the long column of her throat, running my tongue over the perfect cold skin, going lower and lower until I was kissing the gentle rise of one petite breast. She tugged me closer, holding my head close to her body as if to merge with me. Honestly, if it

Kayla's POVIt took a while but I finally realized that the sharp, ear piercing scream was coming from my throat. Raw, strained, pained - those are words not even enough to describe how I felt standing there, watching Shawn's chest open in a shower of bloody rain. Ashterah's hand disappeared leaving a massive hole where his heart used to be. His stunned scream was replaced by a gurgle as blood poured from his chest and his mouth. Even his nostrils now had blood streaming from them into his mouth and the side of his chin. His eyes were wide with fear and the realization that death was waiting to welcoming him."I will find you," the goddess spat evilly. I rushed at her, fingers clawed, eyes wide, canines drawn and ready for battle, eager to claw her eyes and heart out for her cruelty but she disappeared out of sight leaving only the echo of her evil laughter behind. Instead of digging my claws into her burnt neck, I slashed instead at the night air nearly stumbling into the lake."Ka

I made a vow.Vows are more that promises. They have greater potency that the words of mere promises.I vowed never to turn a human or to feed from a human the day I made that dreadful mistake. "Are you sure?""I have never been more sure of anything else in my entire life," I said. And I meant it."And you will not hate yourself if you break your vow?"I swallowed. That was a question I couldn't answer just yet. I

And almost shut the back up when light pierced into my eyes but I stopped, realizing with absolute clarity that the light did not hurt my eyes even though they were bright enough to blind a man. But I am not blinded by the lights. What am I now?And Kayla? Where was she?And then I felt it. The presence beside me. I shifted my position on the bed to see. Kayla. She was asleep. She can sleep?Didn't she just call out to me in my dream. Or was that a dream at all. A revelation, maybe. The burn in my chest became slow and liquid as I moved to my side to look into her face."You shouldn't be moving so soon," a voice to my right said. I looked back over my shoulder to see Octavius standing beside my bed. I raised my brows curiously."You made it back. Welcome.""You were in my... head. You were in my head just now weren't you?""I had to bring you back to what really matters. If you had let yourself get carried away..." He ended in a shrug."What would have happened to me?" I asked know
