1 YEAR AGO Lake Park “So, where are you taking me?” I asked Ryder as he drove. We’d already passed three drive-thrus, and we’d been on the road for about half an hour. “We’re going on a picnic,” he said with a smile. His dimples showed again, deep and distracting, almost daring me to reach out and poke them. Jusme! Ang utak ko talaga, ang wild minsan. “Picnic nang hatinggabi?” halos hindi makapaniwalang tanong ko. “Mm-hm,” sagot niya, simple pero puno ng kumpiyansa. “Okay… that’s a weird plan, but I like it,” napangiti ako. “You’ll love it,” sagot niya pabalik, siguradong-sigurado. I forced a small smile and looked back out the window. The city lights blurred past, but I couldn’t shake the heaviness pressing in on me. No matter how hard I tried to relax, my thoughts kept dragging me back to what I saw earlier. I knew I wasn’t mistaken—the woman standing there was the same one who had been haunting me in my dreams, night after night. The same cold eyes. The same twisted smile.
