Days had passed, and Rae and Keegan hadn't spoken about them. Rae was starting to think that the whole thing would soon be forgotten. She hoped it would be true but at the same time, didn’t. It was a complicated feeling that she felt was better off not described. He didn’t say anything and that was a relief but a part of her resented him for his silence. How could he not say a thing?How could he remain so inflexible?She was currently reading a new book. Keegan had gotten his hands on another suitcase and it was even fuller than the last two. Gratitude swelled in her chest for him. She had much she wanted to say to him but didn’t know where to begin. “Keegan,” Rae said after a long while. Her shoulders burned from contact with the sun and she felt dehydrated from sweating so much. He lifted his head. He was still in his wolf form so he wouldn’t be able to answer her, unless it was with head gestures. She licked her dry lips and asked, “Do you think you’re ready to go back inside? I don’t want to leave you out here by yourself.”She was trying not to look at his chest because there was still a lot of crusted blood there. His fur was dark red and he was lethargic. He nodded his head, though, so she stood up and after a minute of waiting for legs to stop tingling, she marched toward the caravan. Keegan was trailing behind her. She opened the door and he walked inside. He shifted instantly. His back was toward her so she couldn’t see the wound on his chest. He lay on the bed and that was when she saw the mess. The hole was still there but there weee scabs all around it. He closed his eyes and looked like he was falling back asleep.

Rae spent the whole morning thinking about how she would tell him how she felt. She woke up with certainty. She had never felt such certainty before in her life. It had to do with seeing him almost dying in her arms. At that moment, she realized that if he died, she would be bereft. She would never forgive herself for not giving them a chance. She knew then that she would rather be with him then not. It was a strange thought because she didn’t stop finding a lot of aspects about him irritating. Tolerable was what they became. Because despite everything, he never stopped caring for her. There was nothing that she did that ever made him change his mind about helping her. Her own family had given up on her at some point so his actions were admirable. He did the impossible for her time and time again. He did what nobody else would do, not even herself. “Tell me about you and Negan,” Rae said to him after a long moment of silence. “Tell me about your childhood.”Keegan was silent. She thought he wouldn’t answer her question. Reminding him of Negan was perhaps not the most sensible move. But ever since he talked about him earlier, she couldn’t shake the curiosity off. He surprised her by asking, “What do you wanna know?”“The best parts,” she stated. “The parts when the two of you were brothers and not rivals. The parts of your story that you think about fondly, without hate and without thinking about the present.”“That isn’t easy,” he confessed. “Everything has been tainted by his betrayal. Things were good between Rae and Keegan. Their relationship was better than ever and there were days when she woke up with a full heart and a smile gracing her lips. She was genuinely happy. She felt happier than ever. In all her life, she couldn't remember being more content with a decision that she had made. Accepting the fact that she had feelings for him changed, essentially, everything for her. It was a weight off her shoulders. But the closer they got to the date of the invasion, the more she worried. It was beginning to terrify her. Despite Keegan's confidence, a fight was a fight. There would be bloodshed and the unexpected should always be expected. He could find that the pack he knew had strengthened somehow and his few males wouldn't be enough. He got all the information from his friend but what if she was wrong? What if she was working with Negan against him? There were a lot of possibilities. A lot could go wrong. He could get hurt. "Miss," the male said sharply. "There's no need for you to run."The way he said it made Rae stop in her tracks. She tilted her head slightly and observed him. His head was clean shaved and he looked older than her by a decade or so. Maybe. She couldn't be sure. His eyes were deep set and dark but not mean. She could be wrong. His lips were pressed togetherness in a thin line. They were pale. His nose was big and his nostrils looked permanently flared. He was slim and his muscles were lean. He was a head shorter than Keegan. He dropped the bloody branch and said, "They're dead. You don't have to worry. Go back to the camp. Don’t wander around on your own.”Rae silently watched him turn his back toward her and disappear in the opposite direction. She didn’t think to ask him who he was or whether he was from Keegan’s pack. She didn’t recognize him but she didn’t really look at any of the males when she left the caravan. The air outside was cool. Rae was tired of staying inside the caravan. The space was too confined to even think. No, especially to think. Keegan wasn't back and she was exhausted of waiting anxiously for his return. Despite everything he said, she was still worried and hadn't changed her mind. She didn't know if it was stubbornness but the feeling was stronger than her and essentially out of her control. She was too worried about the whole affair, almost unnaturally so. She went from being optimistic to not being able to see how the whole thing would even work out. She saw Keegan dying in her mind's eye over and over again. Sometimes by Negan's hand. It was torture and she wished she could shut her brain down even if only for a couple of hours. Rae banged the back of her head against the caravan in frustration. The whole thing was unstoppable.
