ELENAHe sat on the edge of the bed, swirling the drink in his hand, staring into it. “So…” he finally said, glancing at me. “Where were you working before Ricardo found you?”I leaned back against the wall, keeping my expression casual. “I was working in a hospital,” I replied. “I’m a doctor, remember?”He nodded slowly. “Right. Of course.”I crossed my arms. “Can’t exactly go back there now, though. Not after disappearing without notice. Just left everything behind like an idiot.”He gave me a pained look. “I’m sorry for dragging you into this mess. None of this was supposed to touch you. I’ll make sure you’re taken care of, I swear. I’ll set you up somewhere safe, somewhere far away from all this shit.”He kept talking… something about security, about getting me out of the country if I wanted, about starting over, but I tuned most of it out.I didn’t care.Not about his apologies, not about his fake promises or his bleeding conscience.All I cared about was that glass in his hand.
