The Masquerade

POV: Callum | Parliament Annual Ball, West EndThe invitation used the word mandatory, which was at least honest. He wore a borrowed mask and a jacket that fit well enough to pass and walked into the Parliament Ball beside Valentina, who moved through the entrance hall like she had been doing this her whole life, which in some sense she had, the half of her life that was vampire rather than hunter. She had explained the event to him on the walk over in the practical tone she used for things that made her uncomfortable: annual gathering, everyone attended, the masks were tradition rather than anonymity because everyone knew who everyone was, the point was the performance of civility rather than actual civility. The hall was extraordinary in the way that spaces built to demonstrate power were extraordinary, every surface deliberate, the light engineered to be flattering and the scale engineered to be humbling. Two hundred supernaturals in formal wear and elaborate masks moved through it

The Search Begins

POV: Isla Reid | Eastern Shelter, The RookeriesThe room still smelled like her. That was the thing Isla couldn't get past, standing in the doorway of the third floor room with the reinforced lock hanging open and the small bed pushed against the wall and Lily's drawings still tacked above the headboard. Crayoned wolves and stick figures and one drawing that was clearly meant to be Isla, identifiable by the red hair Lily had insisted on giving her even though Isla's hair was brown. The room smelled like the child who slept in it and the child was gone and the lock had been opened from the outside by someone who knew exactly where to look and exactly how to do it quietly enough that the two wolves on overnight watch hadn't heard anything.Sarah.The name sat in Isla's chest like a coal. She had welcomed that woman into the shelter. She had trusted her beside the wounded, trusted her with supply counts and schedules and the internal geography of every building they operated out of. She

A Mysterious Deed

POV: Professor Fell | Hermetic Order Facility, Sub-basement, St. Thomas HospitalThe facility ran four levels below the hospital's lowest registered floor, which was an architectural achievement the Order had spent eleven years and considerable money ensuring remained undocumented. The structural surveys on file with the city showed bedrock at the depth where the first facility level actually sat. Bedrock and nothing below it.Fell walked the corridor of the second level with a clipboard and the unhurried pace of a man conducting routine rounds. The cells on this level held twelve hybrid subjects ranging in age from three years to sixteen. All were in good health by any objective clinical measure, which was something Fell was particular about. The program required viable subjects, and viable subjects required adequate nutrition, medical care, and conditions that prevented the kind of psychological deterioration that compromised biological data. He was not cruel. He had never understoo

The Death Bed

POV: Sibyl Rayne | Her Flat, The RookeriesCallum sat in the chair beside her bed and she could see him clearly, which was more than she could say for most things at this point. The chair was the old one, the one with the split leather along the left arm that she had never got around to replacing, and the familiar wrongness of it — its solidity, its worn-down realness — was something she had been clinging to since yesterday. Or the day before. The visions ran constant and thick now, the present and the possible layered so densely over each other that navigating her own flat required following the sound of his breathing rather than trusting what her eyes gave her. She could hear him the way she had always been able to hear things that mattered: steadily, with a particular weight, the inhale slightly slower than the exhale, the breathing of a man who had learned to be careful with the air he used. The flat smelled of the tallow candles she burned when the visions were bad, because she ha

Proceedings in Castelcicala

POV: Contessa Vittoria | European Covenant Chambers, VeniceThe chamber beneath the Palazzo had not changed in four hundred years, which was the point of it.The walls were the same stone, the table the same dark wood, the light the same arrangement of candles that the Covenant's founders had specified when the organization was established in 1387 and which no subsequent member had seen fit to update. Consistency was a message. When you were old enough, consistency became its own form of authority.Contessa Vittoria was twelve hundred and six years old, which made her the eldest member currently seated, which meant the chamber belonged to her in every sense that mattered. She had been alive when the Palazzo above them was built. She had attended the founding meeting of the Covenant as the youngest member present and had watched every other person in that room eventually die.She found the British situation more interesting than alarming, which was a minority position among her current

Reflections

POV: Callum | Main Shelter, The RookeriesHe had the facility blueprint spread across the table but he kept losing the thread of it.Not because the information was unclear. Silas's contact had been thorough, the sub-basement levels sketched in careful detail, the ward positions marked with the kind of precision that came from someone who had walked those corridors many times. The information was good. The problem was that every time he looked at the cell block on level two, the scale of the rooms registered in a way that his planning instinct couldn't fully override. The cells were small. He knew what small cells did to adults. He knew it specifically, from six months of silver walls and guards who beat you for entertainment and a cellmate who died screaming from silver poisoning in the middle of the night.Lily was five years old and she had been in one of those rooms for four days.He pressed that down and looked at the ward positions again. The facility ran four defensive layers.

Patriotism

POV: Count Alteroni | Crimson Parliament ChambersHe had tried morality twice and lost both times, which meant it was time to try something else.Alteroni stood at the Parliament podium and looked at eleven vampires who ranged from actively hostile to carefully neutral, and he set aside the arguments he had prepared about children's rights and humanitarian obligation and the basic decency of not imprisoning five year olds for scientific study, and he used the arguments he had prepared instead."The Hermetic Order," he said, "is a human organization operating an independent supernatural detention facility on British soil without Parliamentary authorization, oversight, or knowledge."He let that sit for a moment, watching the room."They are holding twelve supernatural beings, including werewolf-vampire hybrids, in an underground facility beneath St. Thomas Hospital. They have been conducting research on these individuals for an undetermined period. They answer to no supernatural author

The Decision

The DecisionPOV: Callum | Main Shelter, The RookeriesHe made the decision at two in the morning, which was when the last piece of it settled into place and the alternatives finished closing off.Parliament had voted to investigate. He had received Alteroni's message an hour ago, relayed through Valentina's contacts. The vote was real, the authorization genuine, and Mordaunt had immediately called for a procedural recess that would last at minimum seventy-two hours before implementation could begin. Seventy-two hours was enough time to move twelve children to a secondary facility. It was certainly enough time to move one.He was not waiting for Parliament. He went through the shelter room by room, quiet enough not to wake the families sleeping in the upper floors, and gathered the people he needed into the main planning room one at a time.Valentina was already awake, had been awake when he knocked, sitting in the dark with the particular stillness that full vampires had at rest. Tom

The Trial of Katherine Wilmot

POV: Katherine Wilmot | Supernatural Court, Old Bailey Sub-levelThe courtroom beneath the Old Bailey had been built to intimidate, which it did effectively even when you knew that was the point.Katherine Wilmot sat in the defendant's chair with her wrists bound in iron cuffs etched with suppression runes and looked at the panel of seven judges, four of whom were vampires and three of whom were Hermetic Order members, and understood with the clarity that came from having no more illusions left to lose that this had been over before it started. She was thirty-four years old. She had been practicing magic for twenty years, trained in the old tradition her grandmother had passed down, a line of hedge witches who had navigated the supernatural world's edges without formal affiliation for four generations. She had never sought Hermetic Order membership. She had never wanted it. The Order's methods had always struck her as the methods of people who had decided that knowledge justified anyt

A Happy Party

POV: Lord Silvain Mordaunt | Blood Club, SohoThe blood club looked best at midnight, when the candlelight had softened everything and the guests had been drinking long enough that the social performance had relaxed into something more honest, which in this particular room meant more openly corrupt.Mordaunt stood at the head of the main table and looked at the thirty people his invitation had assembled and felt the particular satisfaction of someone whose arrangements were proceeding exactly as arranged. It was a clean feeling, uncomplicated by doubt or urgency. He had not felt it often enough lately, the last year having provided more resistance than he preferred, but tonight everything was correctly positioned and the satisfaction was unqualified. He raised his glass."To London's natural order," he said. "May it never change."Around the table, thirty glasses lifted. The toast was drunk. The room settled back into its conversations. The guests were the architecture of his influenc
