[Dylan]"No you don't." Avira said in a low voice, but I said nothing. "For all you know, this thing around my neck is the only thing protecting you from me right now," she added. There was a shift in her voice. [Avira]"Actually, I didn't think you were innocent, I believed it." Dylan added after a few minutes, and honestly, I wasn't sure what to say to him. [Avira]The stories I have heard about bandits, the horrible, terrible things they did to their preys, all of the stories I have been told about them directly or through eavesdropping came back to me in a rush. [Avira]From the distance, a man was approaching Dylan and I in a slow, calculated and graceful manner. The hallway was well-lit so I could see his face clearly. There was a striking resemblance between the approaching man and Dylan so that I found myself looking forward and sideways, from him to Dylan and back to him again."You have a brother?" [Dylan]I left the guest room which Avira occupied, and headed for the servants' quarters. There, I appointed Mira and Violet to take care of my guest. It was late, and even though they were already sleeping when I got to their quarters, they had to shake sleep off their eyes, and carry out my instructions . They could not afford to do otherwise.I left for my father's chambers afterwards, and after a slight knock on his door, I let myself in. As I half expected, he was laying on the bed with his limbs stretched out, but he was very much awake. I looked from the figure lying on the bed to the wheelchair which sat lazily on a corner, resisting the urge to feel sad. I was happy I did because he looked up towards my direction just then, and saw me. He hated it when he was looked at or treated with sympathy, and as difficult as it was, we all tried not to treat him with sympathy, even though we could not stop ourselves from feeling sympathetic towards him. [Avira]I felt a presence in the room once I peeled my eyes open. The room was dark which was strange because I remembered leaving the lights on before going to bed last night. I knew where I was, and remembered just how I got here, alright, so it could not be my mind playing games with me, as I was fully awake now. I wasn't sure whether to sit up, or pretend to be sleeping still. I did not want to show that I was scared, or awake even, to whoever or whatever was lurking in the room, and at the same time, I did not want to invite whoever him or her any farther into the room by sitting up.What if the person was only waiting for me to wake up? [Avira]I dragged my sleepy self out of the bed a few seconds after the door was shut. If I had returned to sleep after Declan left, I wouldn't be sleepy now. But I had stayed up, and let my mind roam about things that were obviously out of my control.I pushed the door close after pulling it open, and headed instead for the bathroom. [Avira]"Have you gone deaf or mute?" Declan barked, and I flinched. He was closing in on me now, and I felt cornered. I took a few fearful steps backwards, and he raised his eyebrow in feigned surprise. The adjoining door he had emerged from a few minutes ago pulled open just then, and two girls stepped out from the room. Declan turned towards them, and I followed his movement with my eyes. One of the girls adjusted her rumpled dress as they stepped out of the room. Both of their eyes were downcast but I saw the sadness their eyes held. Declan looked away from them, and faced me. [Avira]"What are you talking about?" Declan asked again, but I knew I wouldn't say it, I couldn't say it out loud. So I looked around the room to avoid his eyes until they rested on the empty sachets of femidoms lying on the floor beside the bed."Oh that, " Declan said, referring to the femidoms. [Avira]I stepped out of the room after her, and was shocked to see that it was already dark outside. I had spent the whole day in the damn room, sorting the damn keys and locks.We met Nanisca in the kitchen, stirring the large pot on the fire, with her nose raised like a pig. She left hurriedly for the adjoining room where the others were, leaving me to face Nanisca alone."Your food is on the table," Nanisca called without looking away from the pot she was stirring, which was fine.
