Taking down a distracted fully grown man and facing off with a fully grown wolf are two totally different things. Wolves are dangerous in the wild but when you add in the mind of an Alpha, they become the most deadly creature in the world. Every instinct I have is screaming at me to run but I know if I run from Gideon right now, the hunter inside will take over and I’ll be shredded before I make it past the little clinic. I’m cursing Dutton for leaving me alone right now; he could have communicated with his Alpha to keep me safe, instead he ran like a coward and left me alone with a furry killing machine. Gideon’s wolf is almost as tall as me. I can see his muscles rippling under his thick grey fur as he slowly walks towards me. I think he’s trying not to scare me but I’m struggling to see past the mouth full of razor-sharp teeth that could swallow my head whole without any effort. His sharp claws are tearing at the dry dirt, making it kick up into a little dust cloud with each step h

“What? You want me to hug you now that I’ve told you why I’m here? I’m not the kind of girl with flowery words, Gideon; you saw through the wall, but it was just a glimpse, and that's all you get from me. I still have a job to do and unless I find out that I’m here under false pretences, then I will still do it.” I pull my hand from Gideon’s and as soon as we disconnect, I feel my wall snap back into place. “This will not be some big thing. We aren’t going to slay the monster and then fall into bed with words of love and sweetness. Love is weakness, Gideon, and you're a shifter; we both know nothing can happen here, so just shut down whatever you want to say. Gideon is smirking now, but it's an unnerving kind of smirk—the kind that makes a shiver work down my spine and a chill spread across my skin.“I was going to say, Let me go in the van first." Gideon walks past me as I internally start beating myself up. "But by all means, keep going on about how I’m going to ravage you after a g

“If she hasn’t found anything yet, then she’s not going to; it's been hours.” James rumbles from behind me. Elle has been sat in the kitchen since we got back from the van and hasn’t moved since. My mother keeps putting food in front of her, but Elle hasn’t spoken to anyone; she seems intent on unlocking the computer without bothering the dying female in the basement. “It's not been that long.” I yawn and stretch my arms over my head, when I turn my head slightly to crack my neck, I realise the sun has gone down and darkness has fallen outside. I had a lot of things to do today, yet I spent most of it watching Elle try to crack an old computer. I have no idea what she’s looking for but the focus she’s putting into cracking the password tells me it's important. “You know the mill broke down again today; there's no flour for the next week, which means no fresh bread.” James mutters, I know he’s trying to find common ground for us to talk; anytime the subject of Elle crops up, we devol

“I'm Beta Winslow of the Crescent Moon Pack; you can call me Low and I suppose you can drop the Beta considering my Pack and Alpha are dead.” A lump blocks my throat as Low drops his head so I can see the tears fill his eyes. "That pup is the last of my Pack; I made her run and not look back. she's my niece and it was my job to protect her when her father, my Alpha, fell.” It all suddenly makes sense. The pup that he tried to grab was an orphan we found just outside our Pack about four months ago. I found a family to take her in because I swore I could smell Alpha in her blood. If the Crescent Moon Pack has fallen then Low and the pup are the last two members, and I have a duty to take them in. “I'm sorry your Pack fell.” I try to keep all emotion out of my voice as I grab the heavy keys off the wall so I can unlock his cage. "Let's get you cleaned up and I'll take you to see your niece." Low stares at me through the bars while I fiddle with the lock; I'm not sure what he's looking a

I thought I could never fall asleep while I was imagining Gideon soaping himself up in the shower but sooner than I would like, the nightmares start clawing at the inside of my skull. I watch in horror as my fists make a man bleed to death, as my bullets slice through the air and always hit their targets. I watch women cry and children yell as they weep over the last male of their family. I can’t seem to get out; each time I think I’ve seen the last, my mind plays another vivid memory that I’ve pushed back so far I barely think of them when I’m awake. A warmth at my back slowly tugs me back until I feel nothing but warm arms wrapped around me and a bare chest pressed hard against me. I’ve been yanked from nightmares before but I’ve never experienced something like this. Gideon is whispering words in my ear, a language I don’t know but somehow they’ve pulled me from sleep and left my nightmares behind. He didn’t yank or pull; he carefully coaxed me out until all I can feel is him and t
