"Set up the cameras," Xenia Jensen ordered. "Keep them on him. Don't miss a single detail. This will be the most vivid lesson in our anti-drug campaign."The lights flared on. Camera lenses locked onto my sweat-soaked face. The pain in my bones felt like thousands of ants gnawing at my marrow. The itch was unbearable.I couldn't stop myself from trying to scratch myself, but all I could manage was to scrape against the cold floor.Xenia crouched down and lifted my chin with her black baton."Look at you. Even a stray dog has more dignity than this."My vision blurred from the pain. All I could see was the sharp line of her jaw."Drugs," I choked with everything I had before reaching weakly for the hem of her pant leg.Just then, someone in a white coat walked in.It was Aaron Jilbert. He was the team's doctor, Xenia's right-hand man, and once—my best friend. He glanced at me. His gaze paused on the marks left by years of implanted IV ports on my hand. "Ms. Jensen, look at his

The pain from bone cancer and the morphine withdrawal burned through what little sanity I had left.A dense crowd had gathered outside my apartment. Cameras with long lenses packed the narrow hallway until it was completely blocked."That's him! The drug addict!""He looks normal enough. How can he be so rotten inside?"Xenia stood at the front of the crowd in her crisp police uniform. Her expression was cold as she faced the cameras. "Everyone, this is Caleb, the drug user we arrested yesterday. He's a textbook case of someone who fell into ruin because of vanity and greed."The moment she finished speaking, someone in the crowd hurled a rotten vegetable straight at my face. Then, more followed. Some hurled rotten vegetables, some threw eggs, and someone even spat on me.In the chaos, the wig I wore to cover my chemo-bald head was yanked off. My bare scalp was exposed."Freak! He's bald!"The crowd's laughter and insults crashed over me like waves.I stood there numbly, lett

"Don't let him fool you, Ms. Jensen! This is severe calcium loss and osteoporosis from long-term abuse of the zombie drug! He did it on purpose to frame you and make you feel guilty!"Aaron's words instantly snuffed out the flicker of doubt that had just appeared in Xenia's eyes. What replaced it was even deeper disgust."So, that's what this is… You'd go as far as ruining your own bones just to play victim? Caleb, you disgust me," she said.Darkness swallowed me whole.…After drifting in and out of consciousness in the glass enclosure, I was eventually transferred to the infirmary of a temporary detention center.Xenia must've thought I've shown the public enough. If it went any further and I actually died, it would ruin her publicity. The infirmary was equipped with only a hard bed and a cold metal cabinet.Aaron walked in with his spotless white coat. He had a professional smile fixed on his face.He tossed a stale piece of bread onto my bedside. "There. Your meal for the

I fumbled to wipe the blood with my sleeve, but the more I wiped, the worse it got. In seconds, half of my sleeve was soaked in a dark red.Shock rippled through the audience.Aaron reacted instantly. He rushed onto the stage with a pack of tissues. He wiped at my face while subtly blocking most of the cameras with his body.He leaned in close and whispered, "Keep talking, Caleb. If you say one wrong word, I guarantee that that old man will drop dead of a heart attack in the holding cell."My entire body went stiff. Every ounce of resistance inside me was snuffed out in an instant.I lowered my head and swallowed the metallic taste of blood along with my tears. Then, I lifted my head again and looked toward the radiant woman standing below the stage. With everything I had left, I dropped to my knees. "Thank you for saving me, Ms. Jensen."Thunderous applause erupted from the crowd. As I got up, I caught a flicker of confusion in Xenia's eyes. Her gaze lingered on my blood-stai

Aaron reached out to check my breathing, then he pressed his fingers against my carotid artery. The next second, his face went deathly pale. "Oh no! He's in shock! He's not breathing!""What?"Xenia froze for a split second before slamming the brakes and rushing to the back seat like a madwoman. "Stop playing dead! Caleb! Wake up!"She grabbed me and shook me hard in an attempt to force me awake. But I didn't cry out in pain as I did before. I wouldn't be able to respond to her with a smile anymore. My arm went limp under her grip. The silver band wrapped in red thread slipped off my thin finger and dropped to the floor.A sharp clink sounded. The thread that had bound us together for seven years finally snapped.Xenia stopped. She stared at the ring rolling across the floor, then back at my lifeless face. The world seemed to go silent. She still thought this was another act or trick to escape punishment. That was until her trembling hand reached out and touched my che
