Chapter 1

All the way back to the estate, the pack members kept giving me strange looks.I got out of the car with a head full of questions, only to find that the servants who usually huddled together whispering had disappeared. There were more guards, too.A heavy, somber silence hung over the whole estate. But none of that was my concern. I was just arm candy around here, and Damian Sterling took care of everything anyway.I pushed open the door to Damian's study. Inside were several elders who usually criticized me for being nothing like a future Luna. Right now, they'd completely abandoned their dignity, arguing so fiercely they were one step away from rolling up their sleeves and throwing punches. When they saw me come in, they lowered their voices. One of them even casually swept the papers on the table into a pile.I pretended not to notice and walked toward Damian, who was sitting on the sofa in the middle of the room. His stern, cold expression softened instantly. He opened his a

By the time I got there, the tension in the estate's main hall was razor-sharp.Damian sat alone on the sofa in the middle of the room. No one stood behind him.A rolled document lay on the table in front of him.The Betas of the six major packs stood across from him, each with his pack's crest pinned to his chest. The wolf at the center, their leader, looked about Damian's age. That was Lucian, Damian's childhood friend and once the wolf he trusted most in the pack.He was also the mastermind behind this "siege."He was the one who'd reached out to the six packs, handed them Frostmoon's defense plans, and stabbed Damian in the back. The instant Damian saw me burst in, his eyes went wide. His stern composure cracked. As if completely oblivious to the danger around me, I trotted over to Damian and threw my arms around his arm."Damian, I'm back!""Didn't I tell you to leave with Theodore?" Damian kept his voice low, but there was a hint of anger in it. "Why did you come back

Lucian showed no fear at all. "Damian, do you really have the guts to touch me?"Damian's mouth twitched, but he didn't answer. When he saw that Damian might really do it, Lucian looked rattled. "Damian, if you touch me, the six packs won't let this go!" he warned."Even if you make it out in one piece, what about everyone else in Frostmoon?"Damian's face darkened. "Lucian, they're your packmates too."Lucian sneered. "So what? I'm not their Alpha. I don't owe them anything."Damian stared hard at Lucian. Finally, the hand around his throat loosened bit by bit.The moment he was free, Lucian stumbled back a step, clutching his neck. The careless air he'd had earlier vanished completely. His eyes turned vicious."Damian, you're signing this abdication agreement today, whether you like it or not!"Six packs have you surrounded. You're losing territory one piece after another. Even your two brothers are in my hands right now. What leverage do you think you have to bargain with

The air around Damian turned ice-cold in an instant. His eyes went murderous."What did you say?"The guards surrounding us immediately stepped forward, tightening the circle. The whole room was on a knife's edge. The six Betas didn't so much as blink, as if they'd already carved up Frostmoon among themselves. They looked at us the way someone watches cornered prey put up a hopeless fight—for entertainment. One of the Betas looked me up and down, then licked his lips."Alpha Damian—no, you won't be an Alpha much longer. Just Damian, then."Don't worry. We can take care of your arm-candy mate for you. But there's no such thing as a free lunch. As for payment... you get it."Then he looked at Evelyn, his sneer growing."And of course, we can 'take care of' your little sister, too."After all, she's better off with us than with a guy who's about to become a rogue."We're just too generous!"Snickers rippled around the room.Evelyn's face flushed with rage. She clenched her f

The moment I said it, the hall fell silent for a beat. Then it erupted in roaring laughter."What did she say? A trial? Who does she think she is?""Seriously, I'm dying. She wants our Alphas to drag themselves over here within half an hour to explain themselves to her?""Damian's really let this she-wolf turn his head. He's spoiled her so rotten she has no idea where she stands. Now she's even spouting nonsense like this."The six Betas took turns mocking me.Lucian looked like he'd just heard the most ridiculous joke."Damian, your she-wolf has lost her mind."Then he turned to me, his voice full of contempt. "Hey, Serena, do you even know what the Council stands for?"Who do you think you are, ordering them around?"Evelyn anxiously grabbed my arm, too."Serena, this isn't the time to mess around."She paused, her lips trembling and her eyes red, and fought back her emotions to continue. "I know you care about us. Don't do anything rash."Don't worry. No matter what, my

When he saw the caller's name, the Blackpine Beta's head snapped up toward me. Disbelief flashed in his eyes.I sounded a little annoyed. "Took them long enough."Then I lifted my chin at them. "Go on, answer it. That's your Alpha calling."The Blackpine Beta took a deep breath and answered first. The next second, a furious roar exploded through the hall."Karl, look at the mess you've made!"Cold sweat broke out on the Blackpine Beta's forehead. He quickly switched off the speaker he'd hit by accident."Alpha, I really didn't know it would turn out like this. It was all Lucian's plan!"He said the plan was foolproof. Who knew it would get the Council involved?"The Council Guard is already at our pack? How? We only went after Frostmoon—"The Alpha on the other end cut his explanation short. There was no telling what they said. The Blackpine Beta's eyes went wide.Like a jammed machine, he slowly turned his head toward me. The arrogance in his eyes was long gone.In its pl

A deathly silence fell.Lucian couldn't hold his expression together any longer. The six Betas wondered if something was wrong with their ears. They couldn't accept it.Karl, the Blackpine Beta closest to me, stood with his mouth hanging open. It took him a long time to find his voice. He tried to argue. "Elder Granger, are you sure you haven't made a mistake?"The Chair's been missing for so long. This she-wolf is just some toy Damian keeps ar—"Before he could finish, Damian kicked him hard in the stomach.Karl doubled over and curled up on the carpet, unable to straighten up for a long time."I told you. None of you have the right to pass judgment on Serena."Damian's voice was cold.Granger looked at Gideon Vance, the Blackpine Alpha, standing behind him. "Your Beta?"Gideon's face grew even darker. He lowered his head further. "I'm sorry, Elder. I'll deal with him right away."Granger didn't respond. Instead, he turned to me and bowed his head in apology."Forgive us

Evelyn gasped and instinctively grabbed Damian's sleeve.Damian's knuckles cracked as he clenched his fists.A wave of overwhelming Alpha pressure exploded through the room."Lucian, don't you dare!""What's left that I wouldn't dare?!"Lucian fought against the pressure, the veins in his neck bulging. "I misjudged you. Never thought the useless thing you kept around would turn out to be the Chair. But so what?"Lucian looked at me and lifted his chin, his voice dripping with mockery."Madam Chair, you can't exactly pull them out of my cellar in ten seconds, can you?"But before he could see my reaction, he heard Granger scoff."You mean the two Sterling boys locked up in West Ridge?"He stroked his gray beard, his tone as flat as if he were talking about the weather. "Why do you think we were late?"Lucian's smile froze for a second."Did you really think," Granger said leisurely, "that after the Chair called, I brought them all here just to explain themselves to her?"Th
