Chapter 1

When my maid, Greta, brought in the tonic I had to drink every day, I told her to pour it out.She tried to stop me, close to tears. "Luna, what if the healer got it wrong? If you keep taking the medicine, your wolf might still hold on.""Then let me have it my way one last time."If there was one thing I'd never lacked in the past seven years, it was willfulness. The irony was that now, at the very end, I didn't even have the strength to knock the bowl over. When I asked Greta to pack my things, she sounded frantic. "Luna, the healer said you're not well enough to travel so far with your old injuries."I looked out the window. The mountains rose like a wall before me.I had never seen the sea.People said it was so wide it could hold the whole sky. While I could still walk, I wanted to go and see it."I want to go to the sea."Greta froze.I opened my jewelry box and picked out everything Alric had given me over the years, one piece at a time.Pearl earrings. A sapphire brooch. And th

The next evening, Yvette had a carriage ready for me. She came to see me off, her pregnant belly clearly showing."I've booked the whole Greenpine Moon Spring for you. It's the biggest one in the North. Go and get some rest."Don't worry about the Alpha. I'll talk to him for you and calm him down."I nodded and climbed in.The crunch of the wheels over the snow sounded like a farewell.Seven years ago, I had entered this estate as a decorated war hero, full of pride.Seven years later, they had worn me down until I became exactly what they wanted.I didn't even have the courage left to say goodbye.I looked back at the Alpha's estate one last time. The old tree by the gate had been eaten nearly hollow and had shed all its leaves early.Like me, it wouldn't put out a single new bud when spring came.Just go.Once the moon spring gave me a little strength back, it would be time to see the sea.The Greenpine Moon Spring was tucked away behind Greenpine Mountain. The maids left towels and

I lay unconscious in the stone cell all night. When I came to, it was already light. The maid who brought my breakfast said Alric had stayed with Yvette all night.Apparently Yvette had suffered a terrible fright, so he'd kept the healer at her side until morning. And I had lain there alone, unconscious, in a pool of my own blood.Alric had sent Osric to check on me. The healer glanced at the blood on the floor, then quickly averted his eyes. He said my wolf's heart was still damaged from the old injury and told me to keep taking my medicine.Alric had given Yvette an entire night. All he left me was a bowl of stone-cold medicine. After a while, the door creaked open.It was Yvette. She had brought her three daughters to see me.Liv and Nora held their noses and whined, "It stinks in here. Can we go now?""You're bad!"Freya shoved me hard. There was nothing timid or childlike in her eyes."Why did you make up lies about my mom? Bad people like you should be locked up in here forever!"

The Moon Goddess's altar stood at the highest point of the estate. The wind flung snow against the stone steps. I held on to the edge of the altar and slowly lowered myself to my knees.I set the moonstone down in front of me.Seven years ago, when Alric put it on me himself, he had told the whole Frostmoon pack that he would always protect his Luna. That night, he took 99 lashes for me.The whip tore open his back. I threw my arms around him and begged him to stop trying to be so strong. He just wiped my tears away with his bloody hand."Don't be scared."As long as I'm Alpha of the Frostmoon pack, no one will ever send you away."I finally understood. He'd kept me as his Luna, but abandoned me long ago.I pulled the petition I'd already prepared to leave the pack from inside my cloak and pressed my thumbprint onto it with a trembling hand.Little by little, the moonlight crept across the altar. The hour was up.Alric never appeared at the bottom of the steps.Greta came running up th

Chapter 5

Alric raced down the slope after Leif as waves crashed against the shore.Sigrid lay at the edge of the tide, her long hair spread out and soaked through."Sigrid!"He threw himself down beside her, lifted her up, and wrapped her tightly in his own cloak. She didn't open her eyes, nor did her fingers clutch his collar as they once had.Alric pressed his forehead to hers, then roared at the warriors behind him, "Get the healers!""Alpha, the Luna is already...""She's only passed out."He struggled to his feet with Sigrid in his arms, only to slip and slam his knee against the rocks."Bring every healer we have. Anyone who tells me she can't be saved will be thrown out of the Frostmoon pack!"None of the warriors dared to say another word.Alric carried her back to the estate. He lit every fire in her room and kept wiping her icy hands with hot cloths."She hates the cold. Put more wood on."Bring water from the moon spring. She always feels better after a soak."The maids stood frozen

By dawn, every prescription and leftover medicinal residue from Sigrid's treatments had been brought to the council hall.Alric hadn't left her room all night. When a guard reported that Bram, the apothecary keeper, had disappeared, Alric finally released Sigrid's hand and led his men to seal off the estate's back gate.Bram had barely made it over the wall when a black wolf pinned him to the snow with one paw.Alric shifted back, dragged him into the council hall, and threw the prescriptions down in front of him."Who told you to poison the Luna?"Bram shook his head frantically."I just filled the prescriptions the healer wrote!""Who supplied the herbs?""Martha, Yvette's head maid. She said her lady was worried about her sister, so every dose had to be made with herbs her lady had brought from Whitecliff."The guards searched Yvette's storeroom at once.In a cabinet at the back, they found seven years' worth of meticulously kept herb records.Martha had recorded how much Sigrid rec

Osric lay facedown on the floor and spilled every secret he had kept for seven years. After the border war, Yvette had come to him, claiming she wanted to help her sister heal. She had him mix small amounts of wolfsbane into the medicine meant to repair Sigrid's wolf's heart."She said if the Luna never recovered, no one would send her back into battle—and no one would ever discover the truth about those arrows."Alric stared at him. "What arrows?"Martha's head jerked up as if to stop him, but a guard already had a blade at her throat.Osric didn't dare hide anything else."Those three arrows carried a high dose of wolfsbane. Ordinary arrow wounds could never destroy a white wolf's heart, let alone keep her from healing for seven years."Martha crumpled to the floor. She confessed that before the war, Yvette had leaked Alric's troop movements to the rogues. The first arrow had been aimed at Alric to force Sigrid to shield him. The other two had been aimed at her all along.Martha said

Wolves from the Whitecliff pack reached the Frostmoon estate early the next morning.Sigrid's father, Magnus Hale, didn't wait to be announced. He marched his warriors straight into her room.He stopped at the bedside for a moment, then bent and lifted his daughter from the bed."Magnus."Alric reached out to take Sigrid from him, but the old man shoved him away."Don't touch her.""Let me see her off, at least.""She begged you to let her go while she was alive. You refused."The old man held his daughter tighter, his voice low and hoarse."Now that she's dead, you have no right to keep her here."Alric didn't argue. He simply followed the funeral procession out of the room.In the courtyard, he reached out again to steady the funeral carriage. The old man drew his sword and pressed the blade against Alric's shoulder. The Frostmoon warriors around them lowered their heads. None stepped forward."If you weren't the Alpha of this pack, I'd kill you right here."The blade cut through the

Before Sigrid's cremation, Greta made one more trip back to the Frostmoon estate. She set a broken wooden sword in front of Alric."I found this in the snow in Yvette's courtyard."Freya's name was carved crookedly into the blade, and the broken edge had turned pale from soaking in snowmelt.Alric knew Sigrid's carving when he saw it.When they were kids, she used to carve little things into his bows and arrows—sometimes her name, sometimes a snarling wolf.Later, as her wounds worsened, she joined him on fewer and fewer hunts. Eventually, she had no choice but to pack her bow away at the bottom of a chest. He'd mistaken her growing weakness for a willingness to settle down with him. He had never asked why, every time she stopped, she gazed out past the mountain pass.It wasn't until he entered Sigrid's room that he noticed her wardrobe was filled with heavy, formal gowns. Her riding clothes had been pushed to the back, and her leather boots sat gathering dust.An old map of the road t

Yvette lost the fourth pup she was carrying. After reviewing all the evidence, the pack council found her guilty of murdering the Luna, conspiring with rogues, and endangering the Alpha's life. Before the entire pack, Alric removed his mating mark, severed her connection to the Frostmoon pack's mind link, and sentenced her to life imprisonment in the northern stone tower.Martha and the pack members who had helped set the trap at the moon spring were punished for treason. Osric, who had poisoned the medicine, was stripped of his position and exiled to the Wildlands.Freya, Liv, and Nora were sent to the Whitecliff pack. The day they left, Freya held the mended sword to her chest and looked back with every step. But this time, no one came running after her to tighten her cloak.Sigrid's funeral was held on the eastern coast.Magnus wouldn't let Alric join the procession, so Alric watched from a distance as the flames consumed Sigrid's long white gown.At dawn, her father scattered her a
