Hmm, this question is tricky without a specific author. The name is super common. I remember a YA novel from ages ago called 'Destiny' by Sally Beauman? That one had a historical romance angle. The central character was a woman named Gwyneth, I think, navigating high society and a forbidden love. Her role was basically the 'ingénue thrust into a gilded cage' archetype.
It was a bit melodramatic, but a fun, pulpy read if you're into that sort of thing. The love interest and the antagonist—usually a rival or a strict guardian—fill out the main roles. The plot revolves around her choosing between duty and desire. Very classic setup.

Wait, which 'Destiny' book? There are a few. If it's the one by T.D. Jakes, the central character is essentially the reader on a spiritual journey, with God and faith being the other central figures. It’s structured as a guide. The 'roles' are less about interpersonal drama and more about positioning oneself within a divine plan. It’s all internal conflict and surrender.
I tried reading it a while back. It didn't really stick with me—felt a bit too prescriptive. The character work is all in the abstract, which can be tough if you're looking for a story-driven experience. It’s popular in certain circles, though.

I'm assuming you're talking about the 'Destiny' series by Marie D. Jones? If so, the core is really more about this metaphysical concept of a web of fate rather than following specific characters from start to finish. It's not a novel with a cast in the traditional sense—it's nonfiction exploring synchronicity and destiny. So there aren't 'characters' like in a story. The 'roles' are more like perspectives: the skeptic, the believer, the scientist, the mystic, all presented through case studies and historical figures.
Honestly, if you picked it up expecting a narrative, you'd be pretty lost. It's more of a thought-experiment book. The central 'character' is arguably the idea of destiny itself, and the 'roles' are the different ways humans have tried to understand or define it throughout history. It's a deep dive, but not one for plot lovers.

Book 1 Synopsis:
Eliza Singer is an extraordinary girl living a double life: on stage, she captivates audiences as the famous singer Lisa; in secret, she is a powerful she-wolf born among humans. Due to an urgent summons from the clans, she is forced to move to the village of Siram, home to a small werewolf clan, seeking refuge with her grandmother—far from the relentless pressure of the formidable Singer family.
For the first time, she glimpses the possibility of a normal life, hoping to live as an ordinary student, but that won’t be as easy as she expects. Labeled as half-human by the clan because of her upbringing among humans, she faces prejudice and underestimation.
Amidst these challenges, she meets her fated mate—the clan’s Alpha heir—who looks down on her based on rumors about her origins. Unwilling to accept his cold indifference, she seeks ways to take control of her situation, defying traditions and choosing her own destiny. The question remains: will the heir realize the truth in time, or will Eliza rise above fate, securing her freedom to love whomever she chooses?

I finally got around to 'Book Eater' after seeing it pop up on so many forums, and the character dynamics are what really hooked me. The protagonist, Theo, is a librarian with this forbidden power to absorb knowledge directly from books, which sounds cool until you realize it’s tearing the magical world apart. His mentor, Finn, is this weary archivist trying to guide him while hiding his own tragic history with the same ability.
Then there’s Sela, the antagonist from the Council of Tomes. She’s not evil for the sake of it; she genuinely believes Theo’s power is a threat to all stored knowledge and history. Her sections added a necessary tension that wasn't just good vs. bad. I found myself sympathizing with her arguments sometimes, even as I rooted for Theo to find another way. The side characters, like Theo’s childhood friend Mara who provides the normal human perspective, round everything out without feeling like plot devices.
So I've been obsessed with this series, and the main plot basically revolves around a metaphysical conflict between ancient forces of Order and Chaos, which is all tied to this concept called 'The Loom of Fate'. The protagonist, Anya, gets pulled into it because she's a 'Weaver', someone who can see and potentially manipulate the threads of destiny. The key twist in the first book is that the supposedly benevolent Order is actually trying to impose a rigid, lifeless fate on the world, while Chaos isn't about destruction but about free will and unpredictable potential. That blew my mind when I first read it.
Another huge twist comes later when you find out Anya's mentor, Master Kaelen, isn't just teaching her to maintain the Loom—he's been subtly steering her towards unraveling it to serve Order's true goal. The book ends on a cliffhanger where Anya, realizing she's been a pawn, deliberately severs a major thread, causing a catastrophic 'knot' that throws the futures of multiple kingdoms into complete disarray. It sets up the next book perfectly, leaving you wondering if she just doomed everyone or saved them from a worse fate.
I also loved the subplot with the rogue Weaver, Silas. His backstory reveal that he was originally from the Chaos faction but was cast out for being too radical adds so many layers to the central conflict.
Honestly I think people overcomplicate 'Wings' sometimes. The story really hinges on Alex, our narrator. She's a recruit who gets pulled into this whole other world, acting as our eyes and ears into its strangeness. Then there's Cassie, who is sort of the anchor and the heart? She's the one trying to make sense of everything, often clashing with Alex's more impulsive nature. The dynamic between them drives a lot of the tension.
A character who doesn't get enough credit is Elias. He's the cryptic guide figure, the one who knows the rules of this place but only doles out information in frustratingly small pieces. A lot of readers find him annoying, but I think his reluctance is what makes the world feel genuinely dangerous. You're never quite sure if he's a mentor or another obstacle.
The antagonist's role is a bit fluid, shifting between internal factions and external threats, which keeps you guessing. The book spends less time on a single villain and more on the moral ambiguities within the group itself. That's probably its biggest strength, even if it leaves some wanting a clearer 'bad guy' to root against.
The drama 'Destined' has such a vibrant cast that it's hard not to get attached! My favorite is definitely Lin Rui—her character arc from a timid newcomer to a confident leader had me cheering. Then there's Zhao Yiming, the charming but flawed love interest who keeps you guessing. The way their chemistry evolves feels so natural, like watching real people navigate messy emotions.
What surprised me was how much I grew to care about the supporting characters too, like Lin Rui's blunt but loyal best friend Xu Jia, or the quietly wise mentor figure Lao Wang. The writers did a great job making everyone feel necessary to the story, not just props for the leads. Even the 'villain' characters have moments where you almost sympathize with them before they do something infuriating again!
