What Is The Chronological Timeline For All Michael J Sullivan Novels?

I'm a huge fan of the Riyria universe and struggling with the publication vs. in-world reading order. The prequel/sequel jumps make timeline tracking tricky.

All this timeline talk is great, but can we just appreciate how consistently good these books are? Whether you start at the beginning, middle, or end, you're getting a solid fantasy story. That's rare.

Some fantasy series have messy, retrofitted histories. Sullivan's feels planned. The timeline doesn't have glaring contradictions. Characters from Legends are referenced appropriately in later-era books, not as cheap cameos but as foundational myths. You can tell he had a timeline document from day one and stuck to it, which is rare and satisfying for us detail-oriented fans.

What's the rush to know the whole timeline? Savor it. Read 'Revelations' and fall in love with the world. Then, when you crave more, you have two whole other series to dive into that expand the history in thrilling ways. Knowing the entire chronology upfront is like reading a spoiler wiki before watching a show. Half the fun is the discovery.

Let's be real, most people discover Sullivan through 'Theft of Swords' or maybe 'The Crown Tower'. That's the gateway. The timeline is for the super-fans who want the deep dive. If you're asking this question, you're probably already in deep-dive mode. So go for it. Chronological. Embrace the millennia-spanning epic. Clear your schedule.

The official website has a reading order page that lays out both options clearly. But to save you a click: Chronological is Legends -> Rise and Fall -> Chronicles -> Revelations. Publication order is Revelations -> Chronicles -> Legends -> Rise and Fall. They're both valid paths. I did chronological on my re-read and it was a blast, but I'm glad I first experienced the reveals in publication order. The ending of 'Heir of Novron' hits different when you don't know all the ancient secrets yet.

How do Riyria prequels fit into the overall Michael J. Sullivan timeline?

7 الإجابات2026-08-03 15:40:50
The publication order creates a perfect pacing of reveals. A mysterious reference in Book 2 of 'Revelations' might get a one-paragraph explanation in a 'Chronicles' book three years later. It feels like the world is slowly being uncovered in real-time, both for the characters and the reader. Reading it all chronologically in one go would flood you with information and spoil the slow, delicious drip-feed of mysteries that defined the original reading experience.

Can I read Michael J. Sullivan’s series in publication order or chronology?

The purest, most enjoyable experience is the publication order of the core Riyria books: 'The Riyria Revelations' ('Theft of Swords', etc.) first, THEN go back and read 'The Riyria Chronicles'. Those chronicle books are like delicious dessert—extra adventures with characters you already love. Reading them first would be like eating your cake before the main course; it's still sweet, but the meal's structure is off. Save the prequel treats for after you're fully invested in the duo.

Lol, I read 'Esrahaddon' first because the cover was cool. I was so confused. Don't be like me. Do literally anything else.

How does 'Nolyn' compare to other books by Michael J. Sullivan?

'Nolyn' stands out for its perfect blend of political intrigue and character depth. While 'The Riyria Revelations' focused on the buddy dynamic between Hadrian and Royce, 'Nolyn' dives deeper into the complexities of leadership and legacy. The protagonist's struggle with his father's shadow feels more personal than anything in Sullivan's earlier books. The action scenes are just as thrilling, but what really sets 'Nolyn' apart is how it explores the cost of immortality. Unlike 'The Legends of the First Empire', which had a more epic, mythological tone, 'Nolyn' keeps its stakes intensely human despite the fantasy setting. The world-building is richer here too, with subtle nods to events from his other series that long-time fans will appreciate.
