How Do Dragon Ball Z Crossover Fanfics Handle Power Scaling?
Just started reading one where Goku faces Saitama from One Punch Man. Are their universes' different scaling rules ever addressed or do authors ignore them for plot?
Those fics often treat 'ki' as a universal energy system that other characters' abilities can translate into, so a 'Dragon Ball' character might sense chakra or reiatsu as just another flavor of life force. This lets authors put characters from weaker settings in the same tier through creative interpretation. For a story that loves to play with raw power escalation in its own right, you might check out 'No. 1 Supreme Warrior', where the main character's climb from the absolute bottom to the undisputed peak is the entire engine of the plot, and every victory resets the scale of the conflict he faces.
By forgetting that Krillin exists the moment the crossover starts. Poor guy. He's the benchmark in his own universe and gets completely sidelined in every other. Give the bald man a chance in a new world!
My favorite fics are the ones that cross with high-tier cosmic settings like 'Marvel' or 'DC,' because then the scaling actually works. You can throw Goku at a Herald of Galactus or Darkseid and it's a fair fight. The writers can focus on the spectacle and character without having to artificially weaken or strengthen anyone.
A surprising number use comedy to bypass the issue entirely. If the tone is crack-treated-seriously, you can have Master Roshi perving on characters from other franchises and Krillin freaking out about it, and nobody questions why Krillin could blow up the moon. The absurdity is the point.
I've seen a few that use the 'other universe has different physical laws' excuse. Maybe in the 'One Piece' world, everyone is naturally more durable, so Luffy can take a punch from Super Saiyan Goku. It's flimsy, but it gets the job done so we can see Luffy try to recruit Goku for his crew.

Power scaling in 'Dragon Ball' self-insert fanfiction is a wild ride, honestly. It's like trying to balance a seesaw with a mountain on one side and a pebble on the other. Most writers start by giving their OC (original character) a modest power level—maybe somewhere around early 'Z' levels—because throwing them straight into Ultra Instinct territory feels cheap. But then, the temptation to escalate kicks in. Suddenly, your SI is sparring with Vegeta after a month of training, and by arc two, they're trading blows with Jiren. The key is pacing; some fics nail it by tying power growth to emotional or narrative milestones, while others just inflate numbers for cool factor.
What fascinates me is how authors handle the existing cast. Do they nerf Goku to make the SI shine, or do they let the OC struggle to keep up? The best fics I've read integrate the SI's growth naturally, like having Whis take an interest in them or discovering a unique transformation. It's a tightrope walk between wish fulfillment and storytelling, and when done right, it's downright addictive to read.
